Rookpaw
As many things as there were to like about being an apprentice– a surprising amount, honestly –there was enough unpleasantness that made Rookpaw think their moons of stalling were worth it for the first time since their ceremony had ended. It was exhausting, all the energy that learning and training and actually contributing to the Clan took. They still had not wholly adjusted to the new, busy routine. It was tiresome and frustrating.
Not all their time was spent with Perchstar, either. They were assigned to other patrols, with other warriors beside their mentor, or with her absent entirely. They did not need Perchstar’s presence, but at least they knew her; Rookpaw hadn’t bothered to interact with or remember the names of many of RiverClan’s warriors, few as they were.
Except Toadlegs.
Toadlegs was grating on his best days. He had always been an irritant, but something was especially bothersome about the fact he’d already been named a warrior and earned an apprentice. Rookpaw did not envy him, but there was a dull distaste for just how far ahead of them their once-denmates were getting. Especially the loud, cowardly one.
Rookpaw turned to look over their shoulder, watching the rushes they’d abandoned Toadlegs through. They hadn’t intended to wander away or done so out of some malice, but they’d caught a scent they didn’t recognize and heard the quietest rustle of movement closer to the river. They would not wait for him to let them follow it, especially when they cared little for any order he gave. Even when Toadlegs' paws stopped or he tried to shepherd them back into obedience, they stalked onward. Now, Rookpaw's tail flicked, waiting impatiently for their temporary custodian to reappear. The sound of pawsteps, smaller than a cat’s and with a strange gait, broke up the sound of reeds stirring. Their paws tingled with the desire to chase it down and see what the sound led them to. “Toadlegs. Hurry up.”

Toadlegs didn’t like a lot of things about being a warrior, now that he had his mind on it. It wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t fun either. (at least for him) However, one of the few perks he had discovered was the newfound power he had over apprentices. While this had already come to bite him in the tail with Storkpaw, Toadlegs thought surely it would come in handy when dealing with all of these new apprentices.
It did not. Rookpaw still didn’t respect him, even after how far Toadlegs had come. It irritated him to no end.
”I’m coming, I’m coming!” Toadlegs grumbled, hobbling after his once denmate. ”You’re supposed to stay by my side, you know! I’m your superior here!” Despite the complaining, it was pretty easy to find Rookpaw again, shiny black pelt stark against the reeds. They had a look about them that put Toadlegs on edge, sharp yellow eyes looking for something with determination. ”What are you looking at? Did you see something? Like a fox?” Toadlegs shuddered.

For the first time since their attention had been caught, Rookpaw turned to look towards Toadlegs. Their head moved slowly, rolling to the side to watch as the gangly tom finally caught up. They could not argue with the statement that he was their superior; he was a higher rank than them, and had proper training. The restless flickering of Rookpaw’s tail grew quicker at the slight.
At Toadlegs’ quivering, Rookpaw turned away to examine the reedbed again. “I do not know what I am pursuing. And. My superior seems frightened.” His ears flicked back and Rookpaw was gone again, diving into the thicker grasses. That shuffling was getting louder, its strange scent closer. The beast in hiding let out a strange sound somewhere between bark and chitter.
Rookpaw had only taken a few steps, just enough that the end of their tail flicked out of view between the reeds. Then there was a flash of fur, brown and white he thought, and that strange noise again. Rookpaw’s eyes narrowed, trying to catch sight of where it’d gone, what it was. He could hardly study in when he couldn’t see it. His head twisted away, glaring in the direction he thought he’d seen it move– then it shot at him from the opposite direction, squealing as it flew to bury its teeth in his shoulder.
The pain that registered was dull and far away, but the shock and confusion made Rookpaw reel, stumbling back until they were nearly at Toadlegs’ side again. The beast– weasel? they could see it better now, but they weren’t really sure what a weasel looked like. They were more focused on releasing it from their shoulder, anyway. Rookpaw writhed, but the weasel held fast, growling into their fur while blood pooled around its teeth.
Weasel Event! Weasel used Gripping Bite on Rookpaw, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 SP.

The fact that Rookpaw had no idea what they were looking at did not soothe Toadlegs’ worry in the slightest, nervously shifting his feet as the apprentice ran headfirst into the reeds. They’ll be fine, Toadleg’s thought but didn’t believe, trying in vain to calm himself down. Rookpaw is probably a better hunter than I am already.
It wasn’t a fox, thank the Stars, but that familiar chittering noise about made Toadleg’s run for cover. ”It’s a weasel!” he shrieked as if Rookpaw didn’t already know, watching in complete horror as the lithe apprentice re-emerged from the reeds with the squirmy beast clamped onto his shoulder. Toadlegs hadn’t encountered one since his near-death experience as an apprentice (he was certain that weasel would have killed him if Darkpaw hadn’t been there), and while Toadlegs was much bigger than he had been then, he wasn’t any better at fighting. Or dealing with emergencies. ”What do I do, what do I do!!”
As Rookpaw writhed in pain, Toadlegs wracked his brain— what had Darkpaw done when he had been attacked? He distinctly remembered the poor apprentice tugging the weasel’s neck hard with his teeth, though the only thing that managed to accomplish was to pull painfully at Toadlegs’ toes. He didn’t want to hurt Rookpaw!
Completely unsure of what to do, Toadlegs bounced around on his feet in distress for a few moments, watching the weasel’s bite begin to pool blood— if Rookpaw was going to start having blood run down his leg, Toadlegs would surely faint right there. Closing his eyes right, Toadlegs batted blindly at the weasel with his claws, too cowardly to really attack but too caring to run and flee. Toadlegs will save you, Rookpaw!
Toadlegs uses Front Paw Strike, dealing 7 points in damage and costing 7 points in stamina

The panicked screaming near them confirmed their suspicions. Weasel. Knowing what it was and having a few seconds to process the encounter made the initial shock subside, letting Rookpaw focus on what was attacking them. They would remember its odd scent, the strange sound it made. Even while they folded around themself trying to loosen its grip, they kept their eyes squarely on it, trying to memorize its writhing shape. Fascinating.
Its teeth sank further, producing another wave of distant pain. Rookpaw’s brow furrowed. Again, they twisted around, and on this turn they saw Toadlegs. He hopped between paws, chattering frantically to himself. Just slightly, Rookpaw’s lip curled. Not out of true disdain, but with the realization they would have to fight the weasel themselves.
But, Toadlegs surprised them. Swinging so wildly Rookpaw feared they would be struck, he managed to throw himself forward and draw blood. Rookpaw was stunned enough that they stopped mid-step, blinking between Toadlegs and the weasel, which hardly acknowledged the blow beyond a muffled squeal of pained ferocity. The sight of their own blood did make Rookpaw’s head spin, but they stood even when the dizzy feeling didn’t pass. “That… was… odd.” They murmured before the pinprick of claws seeking purchase along their leg and ribs prompted them to lean down and unceremoniously sink their teeth in the back of the weasel’s neck.
Weasel continues Gripping Bite, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 SP. Rookpaw used Snap, dealing 6 damage and costing 7 SP.

Rookpaw was a weird cat. They were completely unphased by the horrible, rabid beast attached to them, even as it continued to burrow its little teeth into their shoulder. At least they were attempting to wrestle it off too instead of just standing there and staring at it. Toadlegs can only witness so much without passing out.
A little stunned that he managed to actually do something, Toadlegs kept his fighting paw raised in the air— the tom was still too jittery to sit still, dancing around Rookpaw and the weasel like his paws were on fire— and pawed awkwardly at the air around the weasel, hesitant to strike again. Rookpaw seemed to be getting on fine, as the weasel’s grip had considerably loosened, but the little beast clearly still had some fight left in him. It thrashed and wiggled and scratched with its nettle sharp claws, and Toadleg’s let out a high-pitched shriek as blood began to trickle down Rookpaw’s leg. He seemed fine with it, because he was weird, but Toadlegs couldn’t possibly just leave him to it now— the weasel only needed one more blow and it would be done for, he was sure of it!
Squeezing his eyes tight, Toadlegs snagged the weasel’s scruff with his teeth. It’s fur stunk and droplets of both the weasel’s and Rookpaw’s blood splashed in his face— Toadlegs gagged— but with a determination rarely seen in him the black tom managed to finally rip the nasty predator off of Rookpaw’s shoulder. Now that it was incapacitated, killing it was easy, but Toadlegs still whimpered and moaned as he threw the weasel onto the ground.
”Gross!! Gross!! Gross!!” was all Toadlegs could manage to say, trying not to hack up anything as he spat fur out of his mouth.
Toadlegs uses SNAP, dealing 7 points in damage and costing 7 points in stamina! The Weasel is KO’d!
