Subject: Juniperpaw's Warrior Ceremony Thu 30 Mar 2023 - 17:39
Birdstar
It seemed all of SkyClan’s apprentice den wanted to become warriors at the same time. It was hard to ignore the warmth it put in Birdstar’s heart, both from seeing her Clan thriving and the cats she’d watched grow up earn their names. Most of Rainfrost’s friend group had already earned their names– all except one. Today though, that would change. Birdstar watched expectantly as a border patrol returned to camp, Juniperpaw among their ranks. No sooner than they’d entered camp, she was scrabbling atop the Tallbranch and yowling, “Let all cats old enough to climb the trees gather beneath the Tallbranch for a Clan meeting!”
Juniperpaw scrambled up Tallbranch along with Birdstar, trying to contain the smile creeping up on her face. Finally, finally it was her turn— after Rainfrost, Crookedlight, Lightningbreeze and now Sunfire, it was finally time for Juniperpaw to earn her warrior name.
This was it; finally proving her loyalty to SkyClan after moons of living among them. Prove that saving her as a kit was one of the best decisions Birdstar had ever made.
As the rest of the Clan filled in the clearing below, Juniperpaw came racing right up onto the Tallbranch. She had done the same at her apprentice ceremony. “What if this wasn’t your ceremony?” She whispered as the ragdoll clambered up to stand at her side. Even if the words themselves were scolding, they came with a fond, rumbling purr; Birdstar didn’t have it in her to truly reprimand the little molly. Instead, she raised her voice so all of SkyClan could hear the ceremony begin properly. “StarClan, I call upon you to look down on this apprentice– Juniperpaw. She’s trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in turn. Juniperpaw,” her tail swept briefly across her daughter’s back, “do you promise to uphold the warrior code, to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
Juniperpaw tried her hardest to maintain her wicked smile under Birdstar’s soft scolding— it was a little embarrassing, being told off in front of her clan, but Birdstar hadn’t spoken to Juniperpaw like that in ages, not since the beginning of her apprenticeship; not since she was a kit, really. Back then, Birdstar was simply a mother to her, not her leader, not her superior, not anything other than her rescuer and the she-cat who gave her the life she never dreamed she could have.
Birdstar was still that cat, under it all. Juniperpaw supposed the stress of attempting to making her proud had clouded that. ”Who’s else’s would it be?” Juniperpaw shot back in a whispered giggle.
At Birdstar’s call to start the ceremony, the tone immediately switched; Juniperpaw stood a little straighter against the older molly with her chest puffed out, listening in rapture to every word Birdstar had to say. It was a little overwhelming, a bit surreal, but the tail against her bristled back helped keep her grounded. ”I do.” Juniperpaw responded, voice loud and clear. There was nearly no pause between the question and the answer— Juniperpaw knew in her heart that she would do anything for her family and home without hesitation.
Juniperpaw’s own giggle nearly prompted one from Birdstar, though she remained composed through her own part in the rites, and through Juniperpaw’s immediate acceptance of the oath– at least for a moment. Then she laughed, loud enough for it to carry through the hollow, quieting herself with a fond sigh after a few beats. “Then I grant you your full name as a warrior. From this day on, you will be known to all as Juniperheart. SkyClan honors your compassion and kindness.” Twisting, Birdstar touched her nose to the top of her daughter’s head. “You’ve done well, Juniperheart. I’m very proud of you,” she whispered, low and full of warmth. “Now get down and go see your friends. I’m sure they want to congratulate you personally before your vigil starts at dusk.”
Wolfblossom's whiskers twitched, a glimmer of amusement sparking in her blue eyes as she watched Juniperpaw scramble onto the tallbranch beside Birdstar. She had done the same at her apprentice ceremony, though Wolfblossom hadn't the heart to scold her for it. Birdstar had said something, she was sure, but her own laugh before continuing the ceremony signaled she wasn't truly upset, just as Wolfblossom wasn't.
"Congratulations, Juniperheart!" Wolfblossom purred up at the newly-named warrior. "You've worked hard for this, you've earned it. Now come down here to celebrate with everyone properly." She added the last in mild admonishment, though her grin softened the blow.
"Juniperheart, Juniperheart!" There was no hiding the look of absolute pride on Creamsky's face as he sat among the crowd, happily calling out the name of his apprentice - now a warrior in her own right. There was no denying he had been a little mortified when she had scrambled onto the Tallbranch when Birdstar had called the meeting, but the leader seemed content with it - amused by it even - and no harm had been done. He followed after Wolfblossom, glancing up at his former apprentice with a smirk. "I agree, hard to celebrate while you are up there - besides, its time you finally get to move your nest into the warrior's den with the rest of us," he added with a purr.
Lightningbreeze dashed forward with enthusiasm to greet SkyClan's newest warrior, though she was spared the full force of impact by virtue of being out of reach. "Congratulations, Juniperheart! C'mon, let's celebrate- you'll have all night to yourself, right? For now, we should celebrate together!"
