Musical Nerd Part 3: I’ll Be Complete

Alone in the medicine den for a rare moment, Snowpaw curled up to face the wall. She was hopelessly lost, her whole life stripped away. Now she walked the battered stride of Snowfoot, a warrior who had a family and a life. Snowfoot was someone. Snowpaw wasn’t anyone. Tears rolling down her face, she began to sing.

“Do you think the stars know that they're seen from so far down below?

Or when the warm wind blows does it tell the grass to grow?

Why do you think the birds sing?

Do they think that someone’s listening?

Or do they sing to try and chase away the snow?
And if the stars hid from the night,

Do you think that someone would realize the light had died,

Or would they even know?

And if a silence filled the air,

Do you think that anyone would
 even care?
Would they be aware of the
 mounting snow?

We never notice all the green around us until
 the season’s passed.

We never long for the world to slow down
 until it goes too fast,

If everything plays a grander part in a fate we’ll never meet,

Is my destiny to fade away,
 have a goal I’ll never reach?

Am I incomplete?

Barely a whisper, the final question seemed to melt away in the air. Snowpaw didn’t want to hear the answer.


Days passed and Snowpaw’s body healed but her mind remained the same. She paid visits to her mother’s grave, searching for answers and meeting silence. Her song began again, haunting and empty.



”Do you wonder if the snow knows,

It leaves behind a world with room to grow,

Or when the sun dips low,

It gives the moon a chance to glow.

Do you wonder why the sky cries,

Through its tears it brings forth greener life,

Or when it cries,

Does it even know?

and perhaps we never will...

Somehow she felt that all the cats she didn’t know now were cats that Snowfoot had taken for granted. Was this her own fault?



Snowpaw wouldn’t be trapped forever. Eventually she became Snowfoot again, though a mere name didn’t make up for moons of blank memory. Regardless, she knew who she was. She was Snowfoot. And Snowfoot was not a quitter. Staring straight into Mothermouth, she raised her voice in song as if daring StarClan to try and break her.


”And though the sky still cries,
 and the flowers die,

The sun can’t shine if the rains don’t pass by,
Flowers die but still they find new life.

And though may not shine as bright as
 the stars,
I refuse to let my fate be set by my scars.

I’ll carry on, and I’ll do it just for me.

I’ll be complete.
