Sandyshell
The bad-tasting herbs slightly trembled in her maw as she tiptoed towards the apprentice den. She’d stalled for too long, and now the sun has already risen. Dumb mistake. The molly had simply wished to give the apprentice more rest, but it'd counterproductive now that they’d have to travel quicker. Sandyshell set down her plants outside the den before peering inside. “Toadpaw,” she mewed gently, though almost afraid to speak, “It's time to go.” The medicine cat waited patiently for him to wake before gesturing to the herbs. “They uh... they don’t taste good at all, but you’ll need these to keep your strength. It's is a long and arduous journey, so we’ll need to get started- if you’re ready.”
Toadpaw leapt to his feet so fast he toppled right back down to the ground, spindly legs shaking as he quickly righted himself again. It was finally time! His Moonstone was today, which meant his warrior ceremony wasn’t too far away, which meant he was going to be a warrior soon! No more stupid training drills, no more patrols where he couldn’t actually do anything worthwhile, no more following Reedtail around like a lost kit; he would get to be the big, bad warrior he’d always dreamed to be! Words would have been helpful right then, especially as Sandyshell looked at him expectantly, but all the rom could really do is swallow down the herbs he’d been given with a grimace and gallop out of the apprentice den at full speed.
He was already halfway to the camp entrance when Toadpaw realized Sandyshell wasn’t with him— he had left her in the dust in his excitement— but he couldn’t make himself stop moving. He hoped Sandyshell understood. ”Come on!” Toadpaw called over his shoulder, hopping from one foot to another at the entrance. He didn’t want to leave her entirely behind. He didn’t know the way.
The tension in her body ebbed away. Toadpaw was certainly too excited to be hostile, having given no hesitation before scarfing the herbs. As he zipped past her she couldn’t help but smile a bit less nervously, and a bit more genuinely. “Sorry, coming!” she called back.

Her paws ached and her legs trembled as she arrived at Mothermouth. Relief soothed her exhausted mind. “We made it on time, but let's hurry inside. Just follow my tail or scent through the dark.” And with that Sandyshell navigated herself and the apprentice to the Moonstone’s cavern, letting Starclan guide her instincts. After entering the blanketing glow of the stone she settled somewhere near the exit. “Lay down near the Moonstone and slow your breathing. When you press your nose to it you’ll fall asleep and Starclan will greet you in your dreams.” Both of their eyes shined in the rock's light. “Good luck.”

“Good luck” was a little ominous, but Toadpaw chose to ignore it. Following directions to the tee for possibly the first time in his life, he nervously approached the Moonstone, big yellow eyes entranced by its soft glow as he slowly laid onto the ground. Sandyshell said to close his eyes and touch the stone— a quick glance over his shoulder at the she-cat was enough confirmation— so Toadpaw lowered his head onto the ground with the rest of him, closing his eyes in the process. The stone was cold as ice when he thrust his nose upon it a little haphazardly, and the surprise of it caused a full-body shiver to rip through him and his nose to rip backwards from the stone. He had to concentrate, he was too nervous— trying his absolute best to focus on his harsh breathing, Toadpaw resettled himself onto the cold floor. Eyes closed? Check. Breathing slowed? Check. Nose to the Moonstone? Check, even if it was painfully cold.
Toadpaw was so busy worrying about his form he didn’t even process that he had already crossed over into StarClan.
When Toadpaw had come stumbling into StarClan, the cat meant to greet him was sitting quietly by a star-speckled river, back turned. Even though she didn’t look towards him, an ear flicked in his direction, and the figure mewed, “Maybe you are as scary as you tell everyone you are. Headbutting the Moonstone repeatedly is frightening, but only because I’d be afraid of the head trauma.” The laugh that left her was friendly and teasing, and the pale she-cat slowly twisted to peer over her shoulder at the apprentice. Though she wasn’t smiling, her eyes were bright and good-natured.
Gesturing for him to come closer, the starry cat returned her attention to the river. There was a furrow in her brow when she spoke again. “My name is Cloverheart. I was RiverClan’s medicine cat, up until this past green-leaf. A lot’s happened since I left, hasn’t it?” A touch of bitterness crept into the edge of her words. Predators, twolegs, death upon death… now Perchstar gone missing, out of even StarClan’s sight. Cloverheart’s tail-tip flickered with agitation, and she squinted harder at the water like it would conjure up the image of her former leader. With a sigh, she shook herself out and finally looked at Toadpaw properly. “Before I forget, tell Sandyshell she’s doing well when you wake up. Tell that deputy of yours we’re looking after her, too.”
Cloverheart straightened, trying to look statuesque and regal to fit the image of StarClan. “But aside from using you as an envoy: what’s the first thing you’ll do after earning your name, Toadpaw?”
