Subject: Predator Hunting [Birdstar/Smokepaw/Juniperpaw] Tue 7 Feb 2023 - 18:46
A recent sky patrol had spotted geese near the creek, and in Skyclan fashion, a patrol had swiftly been organized to take care of it. If not killed, to be run off. Birdstar and Stoneheart, with Smokepaw and Juniperpaw. It would be good experience for the apprentices, while the Skyclan leader and young warrior were dutiful and experienced. A goose shouldn't present too much of a risk against a group, but they could be viciously territorial and were just as likely to scare off other prey as they were to chase after anyone who had unsuspectingly stumbled upon their nests.
Stoneheart padded silently alongside Birdstar, ears pricked forward as she scanned the snow-covered, rocky surroundings. They were nearing the creek, so she expected that their target would be found sooner rather than later. Or it would find them. And she wasn't her mentor to leave the fighting to her patrol mates.
Juniperpaw was glad to see Stoneheart again. She hadn’t been able to congratulate her on her warrior name yet, something she had been unable to do for ages now; Juniperpaw supposed that becoming a warrior meant you no longer had any free time. It wasn’t exactly the most opportune time to have a heart-to-heart with the grey molly, seeing as it was a predator patrol and all, but Juniperpaw couldn’t imagine going on this hunt without first at least saying something to Stoneheart.
”Hi Stoneheart, Birdstar!” Juniperpaw called out as she emerged from the back of the patrol, worming her way between the two older mollies. ”Congratulations on your warrior name, Stoneheart! It’s such a pretty name, I think— suits you well!”
Anxiety plagued Smokepaw as she followed the group that consisted of the leader, one warrior, and another apprentice. Why they had chosen her, of all the eligible SkyClanners, to assist in this endeavor was beyond the striped apprentice's cope of understanding. She was a useless combatant - something she had proven in her spar with Stoneheart back before other had earned her warrior name. Now, Smokepaw wasn't afraid of the goose, no. In fact, she was afraid of very few things. What she didn't relish, however, was the violence it would take to drive this creature off of SkyClan's land... violence that she was notoriously bad at.
Her ears pricked forward at Juniperpaw's words, and she glanced between the cats ahead of her briefly before casting her gaze back down to her paws. They had to be getting close now. Smokepaw took a deep, shuddering breath, swallowing hard and attempting to steel herself. She would do her best not to be a disappointment, and make Dawnfeather and Wolfblossom proud.
The alert that a goose had been found on their territory didn't truly put Birdstar on edge. One goose, if confronted by a group, couldn't pose that much of a challenge. She was grateful that there had not been reports of bigger, more vicious predators, like a leash of foxes. Especially with four cats– Birdstar looked over her patrolmates before returning her attention forward. Though she was confident the goose could be dispatched quickly, it hadn't made her completely lax. Her ears were turned forward, nose twitching. The ground was growing slicker, ice hidden underneath the snow, and the frozen creek was coming in to view.
Birdstar's ears twitched backwards at the sound of Juniperpaw's voice, at the feeling of the little ragdoll wriggling between her and Stoneheart. Without looking down, she murmured, "Whisper, Juniperpaw. I'd be embarrassed if a goose got the better of a patrol of four cats." There was a touch of humor in her quiet voice, even if it was tense with the knowledge they were hunting a predator, as non-threatening as it was. She had yet to spot it, but... her hackles lifted. This was where it'd been said to have been lingering. They were sure to see it any moment now.

"Thanks, Juniperpaw." Stoneheart responded, mindful to keep her voice down as Birdstar had noted. She was glad to have earned her name, of course, and the apprentice was right that it was pretty, and fitting.
The scent of bird caught her attention, and Stoneheart glanced around. "It has to be close, I thi-" She began, only to be cut off by an angry squawk. Honking, actually. Well, it seemed they'd found the goose, and no sooner had the thought popped into Stoneheart's head that there was a rush of brown feathers toward Juniperpaw. Without hesitation, the newly-named warrior struck out towards the angry bird with unsheathed claws.
Goose used Beaked Thrust on Juniperpaw for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage. Stoneheart used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage.
Stoneheart's timely comment was interrupted by an annoying honk, and seconds later a flurry of feathers was darting towards the patrol. Bold, she thought idly as it rushed towards them. She didn't fancy herself charging an entire patrol if she were one goose, but... suppose she was not a goose. The bird was quick to strike out at Juniperpaw, and Stoneheart quicker to retaliate. Not wasting a beat, Birdstar joined the warrior in beating the bird back, digging her teeth into its back.
Birdstar used Snap, dealing 12 (10+2) damage and costing 7 SP.
Birdstar 80/80 HP 163/170 (-7) SP
Goose 35/55 (-12) HP 155/170 (-15 from Beaked Thrust) SP
”Oh, Sorry!” Juniperpaw whisper-yelled, watery blue eyes guilty. She was always such a big mouth, wasn’t she! She couldn’t help it; she just loved to chat and make friends, and she had to tell Stoneheart how proud she was! It couldn’t just go unsaid! But, then again, Birdstar’s scolding reminded Juniperpaw that she was an apprentice on a predator hunt, and her big mouth could get her into lots of trouble.
It did, naturally. Juniperpaw couldn’t catch a break.
With little warning, the goose they were looking for descended down on Juniperpaw’s head, dull beak poking hard right between the poor molly’s ears. ”Ouch!” Juniperpaw squealed, temporarily blinded by the onslaught of pain. It didn’t even hurt that bad; the surprise of it just caught her off guard. It took her a second to regain her senses, eyes squeezed shut and head shaking wildly to rid the feeling. Upon opening her eyes again, Juniperpaw realized the fight had already begun without her— Stoneheart and Birdstar were rearing up on the blasted goose, unwavering and definitely unshaded by something as simple as a beak. Juniperpaw felt a little embarrassed.
Watching Birdstar’s jaws clamp down on the birds back, Juniperpaw jumped into action— joining her mother, the little molly ran up to the goose and grabbed ahold of one of it’s wings with her teeth, head shaking wildly like a dog would. All Juniperpaw could feel were feathers in her mouth, a little disorienting— she wasn’t even sure if she was actually hurting the thing— but she persisted, anchoring her paws on the earth so she wouldn’t go flying when the goose started to shake.
Juniperpaw used Snap, dealing 6 points in damage and costing 7 stamina!
Almost as soon as she'd made a decision to actually try and join in the fight, it was happening! The goose came out of nowhere, flapping and honking and being just generally mean! Smokepaw cowered where she stood, belly almost touching the ground, tail whipping to a firm position between her haunches. That thing was huge! Bigger than anything she'd ever seen before! And yet the others threw themselves at it with reckless abandon, with the ferocity of warriors.
Smokepaw couldn't bring herself to move, even as the goose bullied Juniperpaw. She was frozen in place, eyes wide with terror, every hair on end. But... the rest of the patrol looked like they had it handled... she hoped.
The goose whirled in anger as the cats slashed at it, waddling away from their claws and fangs with an angry hiss. It struck out at random, and Stoneheart growled under her breath at the bird's target. Smokepaw wasn't... fighting, not that it really matter, and the goose certainly didn't think it did. Stoneheart slashed at the goose again, ears flat against her skull. The stupid, oversized bird was going to regret going after her clanmates, but it wouldn't live to regret it very long.
Stoneheart used Front Paw Strike on Goose for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage. Goose used Beaked Thrust on Smokepaw for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage.

Birdstar
Juniperpaw was quick to bounce from being pecked at to lashing out at the bird in turn– good. Out of the corner of her eye, Birdstar noticed Smokepaw, with her legs locked by fear. She caught the apprentice's gaze for a moment, but so had the goose. It fought against the claws and teeth slashing at it to race and jab its beak against her. With a hiss, Birdstar pushed forward alongside Stoneheart's rising claws, ramming her head against the bird to knock it away from the apprentice..
Birdstar used Headbutt, dealing 9 (7+2) damage and costing 5 SP.
Juniperpaw would describe herself as a lover, not a fighter. On a usual day, this was perfectly fine, or even a charming aspect of her personality. Unfortunately, when faced up against an angry waterfowl, this part of her is not quite so charming. She couldn’t blame Smokepaw one bit for being too afraid to do much at all besides stand there, but as painful as it was to admit it wasn’t very surprising how the goose was quick to turn onto her. It began to peck wildly at the poor molly, landing a couple of good hits— the impact of it made Juniperpaw flinch, stalling the molly for a good moment as Birdstar and Stoneheart jump in to help Smokepaw.
Snapping out of her daze, Juniperpaw ran to aid her mother and friend— awkwardly weaving around Birdstar’s head to bat at the goose’s eyes with unsheathed claws. She hoped to blind it, but her aim had never been the best.
Juniperpaw uses Front Paw Strike, dealing 6 points in damage and costing 7 points in stamina!
Before she even knew what was happening, the goose changed trajectory, going from harassing Juniperpaw, and straight for her! Smokepaw stumbled backwards as it pinched and pecked her, letting out a strangled yelp of fear and pain. Wildly, she lashed out, and even though her eyes were closed and she was doing everything she could do to avoid the bird, she felt her claws connect.
Smokepaw used Front Paw Strike on the goose, dealing 6 damage at the cost of 7 stamina.

The goose didn't last long beneath the blows of the cats, and Stoneheart was relieved when it fell to them. She glanced around, noting the wounds on the apprentices. Smokepaw had cowered from the goose, but had managed to strike it with her claws while doing so, at least. "Are you two okay?" She didn't think the wounds the apprentices had gained were too serious, though she was in no position to be able to make a true judgement. "Do you think we can salvage some of the feathers?" She asked Birdstar, unsure of what they were supposed to do with the body of a large bird. Leaving it would attract scavengers, she was sure, but was it even edible? Stoneheart wasn't sure, but maybe some of the feathers could be used for nests.
