Adderdawn
Sparrowpaw's assignment to him had come as a surprise, considering his recent outburst and the upset that clung to him for the last few moons... and that his last apprentice had suddenly vanished. The thought of that happening again frightened Adderpaw, especially with one of Shrikestar and Coyotegrin's kits– stars knew she didn't need to lose anymore. Her ceremony had come at a good time, anyway. With Brackenwing and Whisperear's return not long after, he was in slightly better spirits than he had been. When Adderdawn come to rouse her from the patch of grass where the apprentices slept, it was with a gentle nose to the shoulder until she'd stirred.
The golden light of dawn was just breaking over the moors, staining everything amber and making the snow sparkle with its light. Adderdawn flicked his tail towards the apprentice as they walked along. "Don't wander too far," he mewed stiffly. His ears were twitching restlessly, on alert for the sound of any approaching twolegs, but things seemed safe for now. Still, he didn't want to let his guard down too much. Especially since he planned to get her started with learning how to hunt– he didn't need her running headlong into one of their traps as he had. Coming to a pause at the top of a small rise, he turned to Sparrowpaw, tilting his head as he looked her over. "Did anyone show you anything about hunting when you were a kit?"

Sparrowpaw had been sound asleep. A new nest and new environment hadn't deterred her from a dreamless, deep slumber. If she had been awake, she would've been thankful for Adderdawn's gentle nudging, however, she would not be able to be thankful until she had been awake for a little while. Groggily, she padded from her nest to follow her new mentor, making small pawprints in the glittering snow.
She was told not to wander, and she certainly hadn't planned on it. Bright eyes examined her surroundings as they moved across the frozen moor, and she stopped just as she nearly stepped right into her mentor. Sparrowpaw looked at her paws for a moment before she responded to the question. "My brothers did more than me, I mostly watched." Tone even and matter-of-fact, the new apprentice was of few words. Long fur held fast to the snow, and she took a moment to shake some off before Adderdawn continued her lesson.

Adderdawn
Adderdawn's whiskers twitched at the curt response, and he gave a similarly short nod. "That's fine," he murmurs, turning away to cast his gaze out over the horizon. If he stopped focusing on just the distant grinding of twoleg noise and breathed in, he could catch the scent of hare on the wind. Though he hadn't spotted it yet, he could hear it scuffling through the snow.
Rolling his shoulders, Adderdawn lowered himself into a crouch, belly fur brushing over the snow. "Watch me closely," he mewed softly, tail flicking. On careful paws, he pulled himself forward, creeping down the small rise they stood on. If it weren't for the twitching ears, he might have missed it– its white fur blended easily into the powdery landscape around it. Own ears twitching, Adderdawn drew a little closer, pausing to collect his weight in his haunches. He was ready to rush forward when the hare suddenly gathered its own weight and darted away, yipping in fright as it bolted out of sight. Adderdawn had learned his lesson against pursuing quarry too far when he'd rolled himself into a trap; so, instead of racing it down, he rose back to height and watched it go. There was only a few moments for him to be puzzled, because his ears quickly picked up the sound of heavy footfalls; and farther along the hills, the towering shape of a twoleg, stomping in their direction.
Tail bristling, he spun around, loping swiftly back to Sparrowpaw and pushing her the opposite direction with a rough shoulder. "We'll pick hunting back up in a minute," he promised at a low hiss, looking nervously over his shoulder. There was a chance it hadn't seen them... but he didn't want to take that risk. "Move fast, but don't run. I don't want its attention."
Adderdawn attempted to catch a hare... and triggered an encounter with a twoleg. -5 SP.

Sparrowpaw's green eyes watched inquisitively as Adderdawn moved on ahead, crouched low against the snow. She crouched similarly, as to not impede his hunt, doing her best to practice remaining unseen as he hunted. There was a certain grace to how Adderdawn crept through the snow, pelt showing, yet unassuming. The hare might think he was a rock... a moving rock, but a rock. Suddenly the demonstration was over as the hare ran away, and her mentor drew up to full height. Confused, Sparrowpaw did as well, trying to see why he had stopped. She had seen no reason the hare would run... maybe Adderdawn had just been unlucky?
Then he swiftly returned, pushing her ahead. Making a bit of a face at the rough shoulder, Sparrowpaw's eyes narrowed. Before she could ask why his mood had soured, she noticed his nervous movements... and the looming figure in the distance. With sudden understanding, she crouched once more, beginning her own trot away from the twoleg. Ear flattened against her head, the only betrayal of her own fear as she pushed onward, looking back at her mentor every now and again. She had to make sure he was still with her.

Adderdawn
Sparrowpaw was graciously quiet while being shepherded away from the twoleg. She seemed the quiet type, anyway– Adderdawn was briefly grateful he hadn't gotten one of her brothers for an apprentice. With a last furtive look over his shoulder, he noticed the bumbling figure was gone, and a weary breath rattled out of his chest. Slowing his hurried pace to an idle trot, Adderdawn relaxed away from the shoulder he'd been briskly stirring along. "Sorry," he muttered vaguely. There wasn't much he could do about twolegs, but... he felt apologetic, anyway. Shaking out his fur, Adderdawn straightened himself out and nodded stiffly. "Let's try again."
Another hare caught his attention, and Adderdawn's ears twitched toward it intently. He didn't even have the time to set off after it though before it went bouncing off itself– and a familiar snap echoed through the quiet air. He couldn't tell if it'd gotten caught in the trap or only set it off, but he wasn't going to find out– nor was he waiting to see if it drew that twoleg back to them. Grumbling softly, he whisked his tail in signal for Sparrowpaw to follow and trudged further along the moors. "I guess hunting was a bad idea." The words were bitter, but there was faint attempt at humor in them. Turning to her with lowered ears, he offered quietly, "Why don't you try, the next time we see something? As long as you keep your body low and your tail even, you should have a good shot. At least, for your first attempt." A scoff followed quickly. "Maybe it's just something wrong with me, and you'll have better luck."
Adderdawn attempted to catch a hare and rolled a bad number again, boo. -5 SP.

Sparrowpaw hadn't bothered looking behind her. The twoleg was clumsy and loud, it was surprising they hadn't seen it earlier. Finally, the noises were gone, and soon after, Adderdawn stopped shoving her along. He apologized at least. She appreciated that, Sparrowpaw wasn't prideful enough to be mad at her mentor for protecting her.
The apprentice straightened up as Adderdawn began stalking a hare, and she was prepared to silently watch him catch it... before a clang snapped through the air. Recoiling in surprise, Sparrowpaw quickly followed behind Adderdawn as he motioned her along. He joked about hunting being a bad idea... well, not really joking. What choice did they have though? They would hunt or starve. "Probably just the twolegs everywhere," Sparrowpaw couldn't help but mumble, green eyes flicking to her mentor, before looking back to the moors ahead.
Before long, the scent of hare once again struck, and Sparrowpaw was ready to try. Lowering her small body to the ground, she began stalking toward the scent. It wasn't hard to see the hare on the moor, nibbling on what remained of the foliage that dotted the landscape. Perhaps her small stature was helping, and Sparrowpaw couldn't help but putting away a compliment to her mother for later. Slowly, she approached, fluffy tail held straight over the top of the snow and frost. It dipped down from time to time, and she was so focused on being slow and steady that she almost toppled over a few times, but she was close now.
She stopped, and everything was still. The hare was still too, having finished its small meal. It was now or never. Darting from her position, she pounced at the hare, tackling it. It took a few moments to restrain it, and another to finish it off. She had caught it though. Huffing from the exertion, she carried her catch back to Adderdawn, eyes a bit brighter than they had been. It was nothing special, scrawny and a bit small, but it was hers. She placed it at his paws, looking up at him. "What next?" She spoke with clarity, a rare occurrence from the apprentice, brought on by her achievement no doubt.
