Larkkit
Larkkit was bored beyond comprehension. There was nothing for him to do around camp, especially not when his brother was busy with that forsaken golden tom. What was his name? Sunnykit? Something along that line; Larkkit had not bothered to remember his name. He took up all of Rookkit’s time, and thus, Larkkit hated him.
Because there was nothing to do out in the camp, Larkkit wanted to explore areas that he was not familiar with. The first place on his list was the medicine den, which he had always seen from the outside. He knew that the medicine cat, Sandyshell, spent most of her time there. Injured cats went there too. But he knew nothing else aside from that. That lack of knowledge simply would not do.
While Sandyshell was off talking with some cat or another, Larkkit split off from the nursery and entered the medicine den. Immediately he was hit with the strong scent of herbs and it made his nose wrinkle. There was simply too much in here. He approached some of the piles and sniffed around at them. There were certainly many different types of herbs around here, but he was not sure what they were. None seemed particularly appetizing, so he was not interested in eating them. Some had bright flowers, some were berries—why would there be berries? They had perfectly good food outside—and others were just leaves. It all seemed very strange. Larkkit started pushing some of the herbs around, wondering if he could make concoctions just as medicine cats did.

Sandyshell
There was much to do now that there was only one set of medicine cat paws instead of two. She was never bothered by herb sorting, not until she had to deal with two or three patients at the same time. And all the while she reached for the herb she wanted the tom to try, there was a not-so-little voice over her shoulder panicking unnecessarily. What if this is the wrong treatment, it chirped, You could be killing him! And so the molly triple-checked before prescribing anything to anyone. Thankfully she hadn’t made any mistakes… yet. Because of the frequent stress and unexpected amount of work, the thought had to have crossed her mind eventually. But an apprentice? It was… simply too soon. I just need to adjust. I’ll get the hang of it.
Sandyshell struggled to tie the bandage around the tom’s paw. She focused closely while trying not to panic. The tom sweetly reassured her to take her time, but it was still important that she not waste his time with any mess-ups. Eventually, the cobweb stayed. The brief relief she felt was soon cut short by a noise behind her that made her jump. She turned. “Hey!” she called frantically, “You can’t play with those!” Sandyshell batted the herbs away from him. She glared at the kitten, but not mad, just afraid. What if he tried to eat something? Luckily there weren’t any poisons in the den, but a number of herbs could cause problems for a young kitten. “Did you eat anything?” she asked, nothing but worried.

Larkkit
Larkkit blinked and looked up when the medicine cat was suddenly all over him. He frowned, not liking that she batted the herbs from him. She looked like she just saw a fox intruding on the medicine den, rather than a kit that was interested in the herbs available. He also was not very happy that she ended up finding him. He specifically tried to find a time when she would not interrupt him, and yet here she was, doing the interrupting.
Larkkit considered her frantic question. No, he had not eaten anything. Even if he wanted to, he had not the time to try. But her panic and the frantic way she asked left him feeling rather curious. For what he understood about the people in this clan, as soon as she was done with him, he would be kicked out. He was not done learning about this place yet. So Larkkit opened his maw and said, “And what would come of it if I did, in fact, eat some?”

Sandyshell
Her eyes narrowed at the kitten. She didn’t love the way he asked that. Still, she didn’t see a reason to not explain. “Well, for one, you could get really sick. Ironic, I know, but eating things not meant for you could be disastrous. Secondly, you’d be wasting the clan’s herbs. Those aren’t easy to find, you know.” Sandyshell returned the stolen plants to their organized homes. “Maybe I should have you help me find more when you are allowed out of camp.”

Rookkit
Regrettably, Sunkit had run off to bother– what was that old tom's name? oh, Rookkit hadn't remembered it. That scowling elder Sunkit was obsessed with. Rookkit had been none too interested in joining him, and so, they had parted ways. That was all just as well: the regrettable part came from the fact that they were now bored, and alone. There was a silver lining to it, though: they were never truly alone. Lark was in camp somewhere. They only had to find him, and once they were together again, Rookkit would be content.
He'd checked the nursery first, though his brother hadn't been there. Lakestone had made a vague gesture towards the medicine den, and while Rookkit had not wanted any help (he could find Lark fine on his own), he wandered off in that direction. It did not take long to find out that the queen had been right– the medicine cat's frantic series of questions piqued his interest, and when Rookkit peered through the curtain sheltering the den, he could see his brother sitting between a mussed pile of herbs. His ears flicked forward, listening to the molly explain whatever-it-was about herbs as she sorted them back into place. Silently, Rookkit left his peering spot and crept into the den. Ducking slightly, he passed under Sandyshell's belly, stepping nimbly between her legs to stand at Larkkit's side. "You did not make him sick. Correct? It would look very bad if you did. Very bad." Rookkit paused, considering, and stepped a little closer to his brother. "You are not taking him from camp either. Without me."

Larkkit
Larkkit was not terribly impressed with Sandyshell’s response. Just getting sick, and being an annoyance? Larkkit was not exactly hoping for something worse, but at least something more exciting. He lifted his chin a bit defiantly and replied, “You shall be waiting a while.” Larkkit would not accept apprenticeship without his sibling, and Rookkit did not want to be apprenticed until their father returned…it was a vicious cycle. He could not explain that to Sandyshell before that very Rookkit appeared, however.
Immediately Larkkit’s demeanor shifted from a bored kit to Sandyshell to a somewhat more lively one. He got to his feet and shifted ever closer to his sibling’s side, planting himself there. “I am not sick,” he promised Rookkit. “I did not actually eat anything.” His nose twitched as he considered voicing a thought, and as usual, he said what was on his mind. “You know Rook, we cannot accompany our medicine cat until we are at least apprentices.” He hoped the silent question was obvious. Of course it would be, to Rook at least. They understood everything from one another.
