The rattle of a trap clanging closed caused Astraeus’ head to snap up, eyes wide. Surely- not just after they’d had a discussion about them- but then Astershine called out, not in pain but in reassurance, and the silvery tom forced his pelt to lie flat. Goodness. He wasn’t sure what he could’ve done to get Astershine free if the other tom had been caught in a trap- at least, without endangering himself. Was this enough prey? His nephew was still hunting- so apparently not. Astraeus flexed the claws on his tingling paw, feeling the muscles protest. Shades. It would be fine in a few days, but still. Shades.

The silvery tom opened his maw, scenting the air… but instead of the scent of prey, there was something else in the air, musty and dangerous and familiar. Eagle, he had just enough time to think before the large bird swooped down on his catches, grabbing both songbirds in its talons. Astraeus made up his mind in a moment. He could handle an eagle- shades, he’d killed an owl by himself- and this would be the perfect opportunity to show his usefulness to SkyClan.

Before the eagle could take off, Astraeus rushed it, pinning the large bird to the ground and dodging its sharp beak. Ah- this reminded him of his youth, of fighting an eagle on WindClan territory. He was stronger now, and wiser, and this silly bird did not stand a chance. The ruckus would probably fetch Astershine- all the better. He could tell Birdchaser that the silvery tom was pulling his weight.

Now, if it had been a fox or badger- well, he would’ve at least made an effort to get Astershine up a tree as well.

Rolling for bird, roll failed and we have encountered a predator! Astraeus initiated combat, using Leap and Hold to deal 8 damage and costing 15 stamina. Pin lasts for 2 turns.

Eyes squeezed shut, Astershine shook out his pelt, ridding it of the dust and debris it had gathered from crashing into the trap. He was only mildly disappointed in his failure. If he returned to camp with only a finch he'd feel like he hadn't contributed enough, and with how long it took to travel out to Skyclan he wouldn't have time to go hunting again later. Raising his nose to the breeze, he searched for another scent to follow, but was met with the faint scent of a bird, It was different, though, vaguely unfamiliar. Then, a short distance away, he heard a crash, a struggle, a bird's cry. It took almost no time at all for Astershine to figure out that Astraeus was fighting a lar bird of some kind.

When he arrived to the scene, Astraeus was already on top of the eagle. The other tom probably didn't even need his help, but he couldn't help but feel frustrated that he hadn't asked for help. An encounter with a predator of any kind could quickly turn sour. He'd assist Astraeus anyways, just to ensure that nothing bad happened. Closing the space between them with a mighty leap, Astershine landed next to the bird with his paws on top, ripping away at the hawk's wings. While Astraeus had it pinned, he'd injure it as much as possible, hoping that his attacks to it's wings would prevent it from flying away.
