Poppyshine
Poppyshine was not cured by any means. She was still exhausted, and after the stress of getting to Fourtrees, that started to weigh on her. But she was not sleeping the day away and the fog from before that drowned out most of her clearer thoughts was not hanging around her anymore. She could actually hold conversations and even walk around to check on her clan. And as part of that, she approached Sandypaw when she was not in the middle of looking after some cats.
“Hi sweetheart,” Poppyshine purred. She rubbed against her daughter and started to groom her fur. “How are you doing? You’re making sure to get plenty of rest, right?”
It was a hard time for everyone, but the medicine cats especially. Many cats were injured or sick and it seemed like they were always up and about—including her daughter. Poppyshine was proud of her for her dedication, but the last thing that she wanted was for Sandypaw to also work herself into a sickness. She meowed, “When was the last time you took a break? Come and eat with me.”

Not enough herbs.. not enough herbs! the medicine apprentice grumbled to herself as she rummaged for the plants to treat her clanmate’s infected cut. She was quickly running out of calming herbs too, having handed some to nearly every cat in her clan. Sandypaw did her best to check in on everyone and offer them something if they were suffering. It was uncommon to find someone who wasn’t in need of comfort. Though exhausted from all the anxiety and worry clouding up her air, she knew it wouldn’t help to stop working. As long as she was being helpful, that’s all that mattered to her.
Sandypaw nearly jumped at her mother’s touch. “Hi there Mama,” she returned sweetly, though still focused on searching for an alternative to her patient’s wound. She luckily felt a little less frustrated as Poppyshine’s rhythmic grooming steadied her breathing and heartbeat. “Yep, lots of good rest.” Just a moon ago a lie would taste like poison on her tongue, especially to someone she respected and loved, but now she found white lies effortless. She couldn’t sleep anymore, nor wanted to. Sometimes she could close her eyes for a few moments and think about the time she spent at the river, but only for a few moments before she returned to her dreadful reality.
Aha! She grasped the substitute and quickly applied it to the warrior’s back. Good job me, I guess. After sending the patient off with some cobwebs instead of catchweed, she couldn’t say she felt proud. I could have done better for him…
Poppyshine offered a break, and a meal. “Uhmm..” Sure she was hungry, but what if prey became scarce? Besides, there was more work to do- But, how could she ever say no to her dear Mama? “Okay,” she meekly mewed. Maybe I can take this as an opportunity to check-up on her, she thought, unaware that it was likely the other way around.

Poppyshine relaxed when Sandypaw finally agreed to take a break with her. She could tell that Sandypaw wanted to keep working. She inherited Dovesight’s intense work ethic it seemed, and while Poppyshine was grateful that she wanted to help her clan so badly, she did not want her daughter to run herself into the ground. Between Perchstar, Dovesight, and now Sandypaw, Poppyshine felt more and more forlorn that her clan’s high ranks did not seem capable of taking breaks.
She led her daughter away from the small stack of herbs and to a quieter area of Fourtrees so Sandypaw really could be without distraction for a bit. She took a couple mice from the fresh kill pile for the both of them. Food was quite scarce with the density of cats in the area, but they were still trying to make sure that everyone was being fed. Poppyshine settled down and began to eat her mouse.
“You’ve been doing a great job taking care of everyone. We’re lucky to have you and Dovesight as our medicine cats,” Poppyshine purred. “How about some time tomorrow I go with you to gather some more herbs?” Everyone was struggling with having enough medicine, and given how frantic Sandypaw seemed in giving the cat some healing herbs before Poppyshine took her away, she figured that Sandypaw would enjoy having more herbs on hand.

Sandypaw took a seat next to Poppyshine but didn’t get comfortable. Any moment Dovesight might need her. Her Mama’s praise felt more than nice, but it came with the pressure to keep doing well. She stared down at the mouse in her paws. She just couldn’t quite believe Riverclan was lucky to have an apprentice who always doubted herself.
Sandypaw smiled for the first time today. Herb hunts had always been her favorite part of her job, and there was no one better to spend that time with. “I’d love to,” she answered, pressing her head against Poppyshine’s. She paused for a moment, remembering her objective. After a quick glance over the molly’s pelt she matched her gaze and gently asked, “Any particular reason?”

Poppyshine laughed, the sound being warm and fluttering like a butterfly’s wings.“My reason being that I want to spend time with you,” she purred. “And I know that it has been difficult to have enough herbs to help the cats that are injured. I don’t want you stressing over having a low supply—so if we go together, we can bring back twice as many while there is still a medicine cat here keep an eye on everyone.”
She softened further and looked over her daughter. The final unspoken reason was that Sandypaw had simply been so stressed lately. Poppyshine knew that she couldn’t really alleviate that stress. She was a deputy, but not a medicine cat. She could identify a handful of herbs but it was ultimately up to Dovesight and Sandypaw to keep the cats of their clan healthy and healing. Sandypaw worked so hard for their clan, and it was starting to show on her despite not even having her full name yet. The last thing Poppyshine wanted was for Sandypaw to inherit the same overworking tendencies that Dovesight and Perchstar alike had.
