| It'd been almost a week since the Big Purr, as Butterfly had decided to call it. Nobody had any idea what it was actually called, not even Pa and he was old enough to know everything. Her fears of an Armageddon or some catastrophic follow-up event faded quick, as kits' flights of fancy tended to do, and now six days later she hardly remembered the terror of it all. None of them had been hurt, and even the earth itself seemed to have forgotten save for a few cracks in the pavement and the odd fallen tree. She had to watch her step now to avoid falling in a crevice, otherwise life went on as usual. So, naturally, she began focusing on other things. For example, she was starving.
Normally, she'd just wait for Ma or Pa to go hunting. She was still small, after all. She wasn't big enough to go hunting by herself! She could very well lie in the den, curled up to stop her tummy from hurting too much, and wait for food to come. But besides that being boring, Butterfly was also starting to feel quite guilty about the whole waiting for food thing. She thought about it more and more as she got older, and she found she felt bad about Ma and Pa having to do all the hunting. Well, not all of it. Peri and Forest caught bugs sometimes. But bugs weren't great for eating, they were crunchy and slimy and not very filling. Most of their food came from the mice and birds Ma and Pa caught. Maybe it was time Butterfly caught her own mouse, even though she was small. She poked her head over the lip of the den, looking around with a flap of her horizontal ears. With the coast clear of predators and parents, she crept out of the den with a quiet whisper of "Tell Ma I went to find food, if she comes back," to Forest.
That sorted, she set off in a trot out of their alleyway. The noon sunlight warmed her spotted fur, bringing a smile to her muzzle. This was gonna be fun! She swiveled her head around as she walked, not entirely sure what she was looking for. Where did mice like to live? She wasn't quite sure. She'd never seen an alive mouse before, so they probably didn't like alleyways. Or maybe it was just her alleyway they didn't like? If she were a mouse, she wouldn't want to live in an alleyway with loads of cats in it. Just to be sure, she poked her head into a few alleys. They all had big boxes of crowfood and smushed egg-dens, and once she saw a big stripey grey-and-black cat eating from one. She almost approached him, but she didn't want to disturb a cat having a meal. So she walked on, checking every alleyway, when eventually she came across a big metal hedge. It was split in the middle, leaving a gap big enough even for twolegs. Beyond the hedge, there was some sort of... empty forest. There were trees, but they were probably unfriendly trees since they were all rather far away from each other. She'd never seen a place like this- maybe this was where the mice lived!
She stepped through the gap in the metal hedge, sniffing the air. It smelled like flowers! Was this the forest Pa had lived in? She didn't see any cats... She wandered about, still unsure how to even find a mouse. Did they have a smell? She knew what dead mice smelled like, maybe alive ones would be the same? She sniffed the ground. There were scents of twolegs, dogs, flowers... and mice!!! "YAY!" She meowed, breaking into a fawn-like run in pursuit of the smell. She ran and ran and ran and- there! A small brown shape, sniffing near a tree. It was a weird looking mouse. It had a big bushy tail and it was standing on its hind legs. Maybe it was a forest mouse? Hopefully it'd be tasty either way!
Some instinct told her to get low, look small. She crouched, form entirely off- her tail was still high and her feet were too far apart to even call it a hunting crouch. Still, she made it work, and she began to clumsily stalk the forest mouse. She made it about three steps before the mouse saw her, darting up the tree. She ran to where it had just been, staring up to where it'd climbed. She couldn't see it, and she didn't know how to climb anyways. Disheartened and hungrier than ever, Butterfly sat down- only to spring up again at the sound of barking. Dog!! Big, big dog!!!
She screamed at the sight of the rapidly approaching dog, its eyes wide and lips frothy. She bolted, though she was much slower than it. She zigged, she zagged, she tried whatever other evasive maneuver she could think of to get rid of it- but it chased her still. Finally, fit to drop from exhaustion and panic, she spotted him. A tom, tall and white. From a distance, he looked like a white version of Ma. Her kit instincts told her to run to the adult for safety, and that was exactly what she did. "HELP! DOG!" She cried, rushing behind the tom as her pursuer snapped at her heels.
