It had been about a half moon since Moosepaw showed up at the doorstep of ThunderClan. Thistlemask was adept at traversing the terrain, but she was also busy helping half the Clan.

The grizzled tomcat ambled into this new patch of territory. It was a roaming forest, with life teeming under the dying plants. He was sure in hot season that this place was beautiful. What did they call that again?

As an apprentice, the largest one in ThunderClan, he couldn't leave camp without an escort from a warrior. It felt odd to have someone babysit him, but he didn't mind today's company.

Comfreyheart was her name. Fur as dark as the blacktop, but had a soft glow in the sun. She was the first cat to see him on the territory.

But what did she see when she saw him? Did she see Moosepaw, a blundering idiot of a tomcat having to play wrestle with kits? Did she see Hank, the murderer?

Or did she see someone else?

He kept walking, scanning for prey.

It was still the tom’s trial, and with it he was still treated like a naughty apprentice. Despite her distaste in treating him like a -paw, the warrior still had a duty to uphold. Thistlemask had asked her to accompany the new clan member, to which she was not about to say no. In fact, she’d been rather eager to spend some one-on-one time with him. She wanted to learn more about him.

Comfreyheart watched him curiously. His large fiery form did not yet know how to pad across the leaves, which she was tempted to laugh about. But instead she could only wonder what kind of territory those big paws knew. There were all kinds of questions she had for him. To her he was a mystery, but that was only half of what compelled her.

She wanted to know him, not just his history. He had a heart, and a sense of justice, but what else was there to him? Who was he? Who would he be? Wh-

A squirrel raced across their path. “On it!” she called while darting after the furry run-away. The warrior sprung over fallen saplings and ducked under oaks and birch. Soon she had it cornered under a stone and within seconds it was caught in her jaws.

The onyx molly returned from out of the foliage. The limp squirrel resting in her maw, and with it an expression that seemed to beam “I got it!” She set her catch at the root of a young tree, one she knew she’d remember how to come back to. While she dug out a hole to hide it in she asked Moosepaw a question that had been on her mind since she met him, “So, if I may ask, who gave you the name Big Red?”
