Something to Work Towards [Closed]

Nightstar's rite had played endlessly in the apprentice's mind, and he was eager to test out some of the moves the leader had used in his fight. Sablepaw's mind was made up, he would try to replicate Nightstar's brilliant fighting style for his own rite, but he would impress the cat by not taking a single hit. He knew that this would not be an easy feat however, so any practice he could get before it came time for his rite was essential. It had taken a lot of pleading around camp, but he had finally found a willing participant, though they didn't know what he had planned. Now he sat in the same place Nightstar had first taught him how to fight, waiting patiently for his sparring partner to arrive.

Sablepaw rose from his place in the clearing as Iceheart approached, returning her nod. "Nightstar has only taught me the basics so far, but I want to try out some new moves." If he was going to take down a badger like his mentor, he needed to practice his moves against something close to it in strength, that's where Iceheart came in. If a warrior could handle a badger alone, then only a warrior would do as a sparring partner. "I want you to treat this like it were a real battle. No claws though, obviously." It was a simple, earnest request, one he was sure Iceheart would oblige.

"If I wait on Nightstar to teach me anything other than the basics I'll be an elder by the time he even gets to me." He paused to think his next words through, wondering how much he should reveal. "I want to train for my rite, if I'm gonna be able to take down a badger like Nightstar then I have to start my training now. I can't ask Leopardsun for help, she would never fight me seriously." This spar also served another purpose however, he was finally given a chance to meet Iceheart. He hoped she wouldn't mind losing too terribly, he still wanted to make her his friend, maybe put her on his council if she fought well. The first move that he wanted to try was one that Nightstar had used multiple times in his fight. Sablepaw lowered himself as he stalked towards Iceheart, keeping his eyes glued to her. When he was close enough, he pounced, landing on the warrior's back and pinning her to the ground.

Sablepaw grinned at the pinned warrior beneath him. This move seemed to be a success, at least for the moment. He hadn't expected her to get out from under him, but this in itself was a valuable thing to learn. Noting the ease at which she had dismounted him, Sablepaw tucked that move into the back of his mind. He would have to try that out, if he ever got the chance. He was quickly realizing that this might be a lot harder than he had initially expected. The gap in their experience was too great, but that didn't give him an excuse to lose, he would just have to be craftier about how he fought. For now, he chose a simple move. Closing the distance between the two, Sablepaw lashed out wildly with a flurry or paws and teeth, always careful not to use too much force in his strikes.

Sablepaw tried dodging the attack, but she was on him too quickly, forcing him down in the mud. He struggled in vain, trying to throw her off of him desperately. When it was clear that his random thrashing wasn't working, Sablepaw willed calm into his screaming limbs. He had Iceheart in this exact position before, what had she done? Angling his mouth away from the mud, Sablepaw took in a deep breath before attempting to throw his weight to the side as Iceheart had. To his surprise, he could feel her grip immediately loosen. With the rest of his strength, he bucked the cat off of him, whirling around to face her. He had greatly underestimated the strength of a warrior, that had become clear to him. His breath had become heavy, and he was unsure of how much longer he could hold out against her. Still, surrender was never an option.

Iceheart's dash gave Sablepaw more than enough time to dodge, though to his dismay his body had grown sluggish. Sablepaw shifted to the side in an attempt to let the warrior's attack roll off of him, but he was too slow. Iceheart slammed into his side, sending him sprawling to the ground. He lay there for a long while, collecting his breath before sitting up straight. His whole body ached, yet Iceheart stood perfectly fine. A failure, that's what this was. In the end he hadn't even pushed her that hard. Sablepaw let out a quick frustrated growl before standing up on shaky paws. He dipped his head respectfully to Iceheart before speaking. "Thank you, Iceheart. That was eye-opening." Maybe their spar hadn't been a complete failure, she had taught him how to escape a pin, after all. "Let's head back, I think my nest is calling for me."
