| OOC: This topic takes place after ShadowClan is gone. Also, Shamlian is just under six moons old.
Shamlian had left Twolegplace behind him. He was never going back. The constant teasing, name calling, and hateful glares had devolved into something much, much worse. The other cats, his own parents, they all didn’t understand. He didn’t ask for this. Shamlian glanced at the scars on his body. They had done this. His littermates had never really liked him anyway, they had all been born covered in scratches from his claws. But this was taking things to a new level. His littermates had finally given in to Aster. He was only two moons older than Shamlian’s litter, but his littermates had always admired him, despite his actions. Aster hated him, and Shamlian hated him back. Today, the bullying got worse than it had ever been. His own siblings joined with Aster, pinning him down, digging their claws into his pelt. Aster approached him, saying that he was going to “fix” him, that Shamlian would never hurt anyone with his claws again, even if it meant that he’d have to rip them out of his paws himself. Shamlian had glanced around terrified, looking at his littermates, pleading for them to help him. But they wouldn't even look at him. Their eyes were fixed on Aster. As he got closer, Shamlian began to panic. He lashed out with his paw, trying to push Aster away. Instead, his claws slashed across his face. Aster stumbled back, and Shamlian's siblings released him, running to their leader’s side. Shamlian stared for a moment, horrified at what he’d done. He hadn’t meant to hurt him! As his siblings began to turn towards him, he realized that this was his chance to escape. Shamlian ran faster than he ever had before. His littermates followed close behind for a time, but eventually stopped. Before long he became too exhausted to run any further and collapsed. He didn’t know how to hunt, he didn’t know how he was going to survive, but he didn’t care.
The next day Shamlian set off again, and reached the edge of twolegplace. The forest was grand and inviting. He had heard the tales of wild cats that lived here, but he didn’t care. Anything would be better than where he came from, and maybe he could avoid them. Shamlian padded into the forest. The earth was soft, and undergrowth rubbed against his pelt leaving small drops of morning dew. As he breathed in the earthy smell of the forest, he felt truly at home for the first time. After traveling for a short period of time, Shamlian found a stump with a small hollow beneath it. I could live here, he thought to himself. Maybe the wild cats are nice! Or maybe they'll let me stay if I promise to just stay in this stump! But as he thought this, he looked down at his paws. No... They'll see my claws and hate me too.
Shamlian dug his claws into the soft earth beneath his paws. Often, when the teasing became too much to bear, he would find somewhere alone and hide his claws under something, anything. Sometimes, when he did this, he could forget they were there. Always out, always hurting others. He didn’t want to! He wished he could be like his littermates, that his claws would stay in his paws. But they just wouldn't retract!
Shamlian looked up to the treetops. Birds flew, and squirrels jumped from branch to branch. It reminded him just how hungry he really was. That's right... Wild cats hunt for themselves. But how? He looked around, trying to locate something a bit closer to himself. A small movement caught his eye. What was it? It was like one of the rats from twolegplace, but tiny. Was it a rat kit? Whatever it was, it was the perfect size for him! "I'm going to get you, rat kit!" Shamlian said quietly to himself. He tried to approach slowly, but being inexperienced, the mouse noticed him and swiftly scurried away. He attempted to follow, but lost it quickly in the dense underbrush. Shamlian returned to his little stump defeated, letting out a big sigh. What was he going to do? ______________________________________ Crimsonpaw of ThunderClan |

| ❒ Breathing in the fresh air, Briarpaw made her way through her clan's territory in a leisurely pace. She wasn't going anywhere in particular so there was no need to rush. She had finished her daily duties so she decided to take a nice stroll to pass the time. She had been enjoying it... until it was cut short.
❒ It had started with an odd feeling in her gut. It wasn't the shivery feeling she got when there was danger nearby. This was different. Despite not sensing any danger, she still remained on high alert—her eyes were sharp and she was ready to escape if there was the need. Then, she heard a voice. It was faint and she could only make out "Ratkit". Ratkit? She didn't know anyone named Ratkit. This set her on an even higher alert. Was there a trespasser here right now? She sniffed the air and then wrinkled her nose. They didn't smell like any clan cat. A loner? A rogue? Perhaps a wayward kittypet? She didn't drop her guard as she slowly approached the direction of where the voice came from.
❒ Before she could even get too close, a mouse suddenly broke through the underbrush, startling her. She bit the inside of her cheek to refrain from letting out even a peep. She didn't want to blow her cover. She wanted to get a glance at the individual before making her hasty retreat. If they did happen to be a rogue or even a loner, she couldn't really stay.
❒ She quietly sneaked through the bushes and foliage, soon coming across a tree stump. Her sage-green eyes widened a fraction as she finally got a glimpse of the intruder. It was a kit—perhaps nearing apprentice age. She had an inner debate on whether to approach the young tom. He didn't look all too threatening with the exception of his unsheathed claws. Had he been trying to hunt the mouse she'd been startled by? It seemed like it to her. She didn't like the idea of strangers hunting and taking away the prey that rightfully belonged to Thunderclan. However, she couldn't help but soften as she watched the younger cat. He didn't look like he had any malicious intent. He looked lonely and anxious. If he was a kittypet, he might be lost and was probably worried about whether he'd be able to get back home or not. If he was a rogue or loner's kit, she needed to tread extra carefully. They could still be around, waiting to ambush some poor, unsuspecting clan cat that decided to aid the lost-looking kitten. There was so much that could go wrong but she needed to know. She was well aware that her mother wasn't going to be very happy with what she was about to do but she'll take the scolding with grace if it meant helping out the strange kit.
❒ With her mind settled, she sighed and stepped out from her hiding spot with a gentle and un-imposing demeanor, hoping to not put the kit, or whoever might be watching, on high alert. She needed to approach this delicately. She allowed her pawsteps to make some noise so she wouldn't overly startle him. "...Hello?" she called out. "Are you alright there, kit? Are you lost?" She was now standing a fox-length away from the kit at the stump. "I am an apprentice of Thunderclan. It is the group of cats that this territory belongs to. My name is Briarpaw. I can help you get back to your home or at least help you find your parents..." She watched him for a moment. "I heard you trying to hunt. Are you hungry?"

| "...Hello?" Shamlian immediately sat up with a frightened look on his face, despite the young apprentice's efforts to not startle him. He instinctively and quickly moved his long, bushy tail to cover his paws as best as it could. As he realized that the cat wasn't that much older than him, and talked gently unlike the other cat's he'd known, he relaxed slightly. She seemed really nice. Was she a wild cat? Were all the wild cats like her? As she mentioned helping him get home, Shamlian averted his eyes as they filled with tears, fixing them on his paws. "I don't want to go home," he said in a sad yet determined voice. "I... I can't go back there!" He looked back up, meeting Briarpaw's eyes as she continued speaking. "...Yeah, I am hungry... I tried to catch that rat kit, but it was too fast. I don't really know how to hunt." After a moment of silence, Shamlian continued: "Please don't make me leave! It's so nice here! Twolegplace is stinky, and all the cats are mean." ______________________________________ Crimsonpaw of ThunderClan |

| ❒ Briarpaw was momentarily worried that she'd spooked the kit despite her best efforts not to. However, she sagged in relief when the younger tom appeared to have relaxed his tense posture. Good. She didn't scare him away. The movement with his tail didn't evade her but she chose not to comment on it for now.
❒ When the kitten first began speaking, she offered him a patient, reassuring smile. It slowly began to fade when he continued. She felt bad for the ex-kittypet. She now knew that he'd left his twolegs and family on purpose. She couldn't imagine being separated from her own family. She would've probably been distressed much more than this kit. He was adjusting well enough to his situation—something that impressed her.
❒ She searched his face and sighed through her nose. She couldn't leave him here all on his own and go about her day. She weighed her options and finally decided on what to do. "Alright, first things first, what is your name?" she questioned gently. "You cannot and should not stay here in the territory all on your own. We have predators of all types that roam the territory and you will be overwhelmed quickly. Rogues and other clan cats—there are four other clans we share this "wilder" life with—have been known to trespass and our clan cannot guarantee that we can keep them at bay. Learning to defend yourself is a must. You also do not know how to hunt for yourself and will starve quickly if you do not learn. However, every single prey is precious to my clan since we need them to feed our many mouths. You will most likely be chased out or cornered for questioning since they do not know you or your situation..." she paused to let him process things before continuing, "Rest assured that I will also not be telling you to leave. Wherever you came from, it was not a good place for you to grow up in and I will not sleep well knowing I sent you back to such an environment."
❒ Her stern demeanor melted away and she offered him a small smile. "I am telling you all this because I have decided on taking you back to my clan if you are willing to come with me. We will be giving my mother, the current deputy, your story and she will decide whether she will take you in to be a part of the clan. I do not believe you have to be worried about the answer. Kits have been known to be easily accepted into my clan. Just in case, I will be supporting you and your case." She walked closer to the young tom and tilted her head. "Please know that clan life is not easy in the slightest. Food can be scarce at times, such as during Leaf-bare. Skirmishes and battles will happen at times despite the best efforts of my parents so be mentally prepared to be taught how to fight. We also share clan duties so at times, you will have your paws full with chores but everything is always for the betterment of the clan," she explained. She smiled gently then spoke up again, "In exchange for all this, you will have proper friends and family—companionship and all other sorts of relationships... Blood should not determine family but who you grow to love as such."
❒ She stepped back and nodded, "Now, before I can lead you to my clan, do you have any questions and concerns?" She eyed his covered paws. "Or things the clan should know about you beforehand? I promise will not judge you."

| Shamlian listened to the apprentice as she spoke again. "My... My name is Shamlian," he replied. He continued to listen as she spoke, listing all the reasons that he shouldn't, and couldn't, stay. I knew it... He thought to himself, lowering his head. I knew it was too good to be true. But then... She wasn't going to make him leave? Shamlian perked up, looking hopeful. He didn't have to go back! He could live with this nice she-cat and her clan! "I'll come with you! I can be strong! I can learn to hunt and fight!" He could have a family. A real family! One that loved him, accepted him for who he was- Shamlian cut himself off as Briarpaw turned her attention to his paws. In his excitement, he had once again forgotten what made him so different from all his siblings. He had to tell her, it was imposable to hide it much longer. Still, Shamlian hesitated. What if she doesen't accept me? What if she says I'm a freak and chases me away? But there was something in the kind way she promised to not judge him that he believed, despite his past experiences. Something that let him hope that this time would be different. Taking a deep breath, Shamlian moved his tail, exposing his claws. "I- they- my- my claws, they... they don't go away," he began. "I don't know why! I wish they would, but they just wont! All my siblings claws can go in their paws, but I can't make mine!" ______________________________________ Crimsonpaw of ThunderClan |

| ❒ Her eyes softened further at his hopeful expression. "Well, nice to meet you, Shamlian. It is a very lovely name," she said with a faint smile. "Your enthusiasm is very much appreciated. It will serve you well in Thunderclan." She noticed his apprehension about showing what he'd been hiding. She continued to keep her expression open. He was slowly starting to warm up to her. Their similar ages probably helped a lot. He wasn't too much younger than her.
❒ She kept silent as she watched him expose his paws. She tilted her head, eyes never leaving his paws, as he spoke about his issue. It was quite a unique situation. She'd heard and seen cats with extra long claws but she'd never seen someone with unsheathable claws. Did it hurt? His tone indicated that he'd had problems arise due to this. She assumed that it was something he was born with. He mentioned that all his other siblings had normal, sheathable claws. How peculiar.
❒ Briarpaw finally looked up and offered a small, reassuring nod. "Breathe, Shamlian. It is alright... Do I assume correctly they have always been like this? They shouldn't pose a problem for many of your future duties. However, activities like sparring and playing with some of the more delicate members of the clan will be a bit difficult. I think it would be wise to have our medicine cats and my mother look closer at them. Perhaps they could find a way to help them sheath. Do not be discouraged if it doesn't work that way. We will just have to guide you carefully through your life so you don't have to worry about your claws constantly. I am sure you will get used to it with enough time and practice. Have faith, Shamlian."
❒ The apprentice glanced toward the direction of the camp then back at the younger cat. "Well, since you have agreed to come with me back to my clan's camp, I will now lead you to it. Be prepared to see many other cats working or lazing about. It is a camp for a large clan of cats. They might stare and whisper but pay them no mind for now. However, that does not mean being disrespectful and ignoring any questions directly asked to you—I can help answer some for you if you wish. They have as much say in letting someone into the clan as my mother does," she warned. She stood straighter and beckoned the other to follow. "Come. Do not worry. I will be there to aid you. I only warn you of such things not to scare you but to prepare you, just in case." With that, the Thunderclan apprentice began to lead the kitten back to her clan.

| Shamlian blushed slightly when Briarpaw said she liked his name. "Yeah, I've always been this way," he said in response to her question. He listened as she spoke about what his claws would mean for his life in ThunderClan. It made sense that he'd have to live more carefully, he'd always had too. What is a medicin cat? He wondered to himself. Can they really help my claws? He hoped so. Shamlian decided he'd ask when they got to Briarpaw's camp, when he could talk to them himself. As the She-cat got up to leave, Shamlian followed. The thought of being around so many cats scared him, but hopefully they would be as nice and understanding as this apprentice had been. ______________________________________ Crimsonpaw of ThunderClan |
