Owlshriek

The forest never waited for any cat. Most of all, the forest did not wait for Owlshriek. More cats grew up in RiverClan by the day. This meant that soon after Stormdance grew to warriorhood, a new apprentice was delivered to him. After becoming a mentor already, Owlshriek wasn't nervous about it at all. If anything, the warrior felt more patient. That was why he settled outside the apprentice's den in the early morning, waiting for however long it took for Yarrowpaw to step out into the light.

Yarrowpaw of RiverClan

Yarrowpaw (paw!) sat just inside the apprentice den, trying to calm his racing heart. He couldn’t believe it, almost; he was an apprentice! After moons of thinking he wasn’t good enough and that he’d never make it, he finally crawled his way to apprenticeship! Sure, he fell at his ceremony, which had been mortifying, but all of that was in the past now! An apprentice! An apprentice with a mentor who stood right outside of the apprentice den, waiting for him-

Owlshriek was waiting for him!

Yarrowpaw had decided the night before to avoid immediately running out of the apprentice den at dawn, as he didn’t want to look too eager. He was suave. Completely neutral. But Yarrowpaw just couldn’t wait anymore. The lanky tom quickly padded out of the apprentice den and towards Owlshriek’s side, trying his hardest not to look like an over-excited fool. ”Good morning, Owlshriek! What are we going to do today?”

Owlshriek

Relieved that Yarrowpaw didn't sleep in too long, Owlshriek fitted the apprentice with a nod in greeting. His voice was polite but stern, leaving little room for argument. "I'll instruct you on propper fishing skills and basic self-defense. We can review our borders tomorrow during a patrol. I'll ask Poppyshine specifically for it." Satisfied, he turned away, leading the way out of camp at a decent pace. The warrior knew that the young apprentice would be unable to keep pace as Stormdance had at the end of his apprenticeship. But, setting expectations high allowed the apprentice to see where the bar currently was. Even if it was for running or endurance.

Soon enough, the rocky shore of the River came into view. Picking out the same flat rock that Stormdance had first learned how to hunt, Owlshriek settled next to it, watching Yarrowpaw approach behind. The young apprentice's long legs certainly helped him keep pace, it seemed. Owlshriek was pleased.

"We will begin with hunting." Owlshriek mewed, nodding Yarrowpaw over to the edge of the rock. For a long moment, silence enveloped them both. Yellow eyes watched shadows pass through the water. Dark waves lapped at the shoreline, but he did not flinch as the water flicked onto his form. Then, leaning low, the warrior's paw darted out towards a fish, scooping it up onto the bank, then severing its spine with a quick bite. "Do not let your shadow fall over the water. The fish will escape that way. You do not need to catch the fish in your mouth, simply bring it onto land and kill it there. Style does not feed the clan." He explained, pulling the silvery fish to the far side and placing a few branches and leaves over its prone form. "You try, Yarrowpaw."

ooc; Use the hunting system to knock off one of your recs!

Yarrowpaw of RiverClan

Yarrowpaw jogged after Owlshriek at an uneven pace, wobbly legs dancing as he attempted to keep up. Owlshriek was so fast, the way he simply moved a level of grace and power that Yarrowpaw couldn’t even fathom himself ever having. His legs, while fawn-like, were almost longer than Owlshriek’s, which helped him immensely in keeping up with the warrior; the apprentice adjusted his stride from short, staccato steps to long strides. The whole walking issue was finally resolving itself, little by little— Woolypaw’s training really paid off.

Stopping to stand by his mentor, Yarrowpaw looked into the water of The River, the current warping his reflection. His reflection stared back at him with large, odd-colored eyes, looking just as nervous as Yarrowpaw felt— was he really that bad at hiding his emotions? The apprentice attempted to steady his face, watching his rippling, unsteady twin’s expressions change and morph until it settled on a face Yarrowpaw felt looked a lot less like fearfulness. Satisfied, the white tom turned to watch Owlshriek just as he skillfully scooped a fish out of the banks, almost effortless in the way he quickly killed it. Amazement was an understatement for how Yarrowpaw felt- his mentor was amazing!

The awe was quickly replaced with distress yet again, when Owlshriek instructed him to copy. Yarrowpaw was going to make a fool out of himself in front of his cool mentor, now, wasn’t he? Though worried, the apprentice couldn’t help but appreciate Owlshriek’s nonchalance and trust in Yarrowpaw’s abilities. He was used to being treated with extra care, doted on and given extra instruction, but Owlshriek treated him like any other apprentice. Because Yarrowpaw really was just like any other apprentice, wasn’t he?’

In careful consideration of his mentor's instruction, Yarrowpaw kept his form low on the banks in order to keep his shadow away from the water. He waited with baited breath for the arrival of any more fish, and sure enough, a small trout swam its way in Yarrowpaw’s direction, blissfully unaware of the cat’s presence. This was it, time to prove himself— arm outstretched, paw angled, claws unsheathed…

Success!

Yarrowpaw quickly grabbed the fish by it's slippery side, pulling it unceremoniously onto the rocky shore. It's tail flapped, its body squirmed-- the thing was so slimy and slippery-- and Yarrowpaw quickly bit into it's spine. It's movement ceased.

The apprentice nearly squealed with delight, dropping the trout onto the bank with a thud. Forgetting the fish entirely, Yarrrowpaw raised his head to report to Owlshriek. "I did it! I did it! Did you see that-- I mean, did you really see it?! I'm the best! I'm the best fisher in the whole forest!"

Owlshriek

First try, Owlshriek nodded in approval, finding himself unable to share in the enthusiasm as Yarrowpaw did. The loss of Mapleleaf still hung heavy in the warrior, though he knew not to ignore Yarrowpaw's achievements. "First try, I'm impressed." He mewed evenly as the amusement of the apprentice's excitement seemed to worm its way past his barriers. Owlshriek moved his tail in the direction of his original kill. "Place it there with mine. We will pick it up after we finish self-defense."

Once Yarrowpaw did so, Owlshriek led the way further inland, out of sight of the ThunderClan border. Once in the clearing with soft grass under their paws, the warrior turned towards Yarrowpaw. "Defending yourself and your clan is of the utmost importance. Our borders are sacred; if we let any cat cross, it won't be long before our prey goes into their bellies." It was rich coming from him but needed to be said. Perhaps Yarrowpaw would be better than him. "Attack me, and I will correct any mistakes you make. Alright? Claws sheathed." Poor Dovesight would be terrified if Owlshriek came back without an eye.

ooc: go ahead and attack with the system! This will be a spar, but no actual damage will be done!

Yarrowpaw

It was really no surprise to Yarrowpaw that Owlshriek reacted with nonchalance— he knew that the elder warrior was still struggling with showing any emotion that wasn’t collected indifference or grief. The apprentice couldn’t even begin to think about what it must feel like to lose a mate. Owlshriek was strong.

Following Owlshriek away from the River and towards a clearing, Yarrowpaw knew what was next. He would have to fight Owlshriek, wouldn’t he? Owlshriek stopped to explain the rules and his expectations, but not much went through to the apprentice’s head except ‘claws sheathed.’ Surprisingly, however, not a lot of anxiety managed to bubble its way into the front of Yarrowpaw’s mind— he must be riding a wave of confidence after his successful hunt. Owlshriek moved into position and Yarrowpaw quickly copied him, bowing low to the ground and watching his mentor for any movement. Owlshriek didn’t seem to be preparing to move first, letting Yarrowpaw have full control of his first move. Yarrowpaw wouldn’t take it for granted.

Leaping onto the larger warrior, the apprentice aimed a harmless blow at Owlshriek’s muzzle, hitting the brown warrior straight between the eyes. He was clumsy, nearly toppling over himself as he jumped, but he managed to hit with at least some precision. Yarrowpaw just hoped he didn’t look foolish while doing it.

Yarrowpaw used Front Paw Blow on Owlshriek, dealing 4 points in damage and costing 5 points in stamina.

Yarrowpaw: 20 HP/55 SP (-5)
Owlshriek: 46 HP (-4)/120 SP

Owlshriek

Owlshriek didn't move as he was batted on his head, he simply blinked. Not reacting for a long moment, Owlshriek sat down, looking over his apprentice with a critical eye. "You have the enthusiasm and drive." He remarked, shaking his head where he had been hit. "That said, you have longer legs than most cats; they seem to be difficult to fight with."With a tilt to his head, the tom stood and walked around Yarrowpaw once before sitting back down. His yellow eyes seemed contemplative.

Then, after a long moment, the tom nodded and looked Yarrowpaw in his eyes. "Let's focus on getting you comfortable in your pelt. Any training I can offer now would be difficult for you if you can't maneuver your body as you need." Standing once more, Owlshriek nodded towards a nearby tree. "I would like you to climb to the lower branch of this tree." The branch was only a few mouse lengths above Owlshriek's head. A safe jump down. "Put special focus on where you put your paws and how you rotate them to latch onto the tree. Do not move your paws into place without thinking about it." The warrior watched his apprentice carefully to make sure nothing happened that would end up hurting him. After a quick explanation of how to climb a tree, the mentor gave Yarrowpaw a nod of encouragement.

Yarrowpaw

Yarrowpaw was practically vibrating out of his pelt as Owlshriek gave him a firm, long once-over, explaining his new approach in response to Yarrowpaw’s legs. His legs weren’t that bad! He’s had coordination issues since he was a little kit, sure, and it still affected his balance and accuracy even now, but… well. Okay, maybe it was that bad. Normal apprentices didn’t trip over their own paws every couple of moments did they?

Careful in following the warriors instructions, Yarrowpaw ambled over to the tree in question, reaching up to test his weight. It seemed sturdy enough— didn’t bend too harshly when he pressed down. Yarrowpaw unsheathed his claws, using their points to give himself more grip, and began to carefully climb up. He wasn’t too high off of the ground, paws next to Owlshriek’s head, but Yarrowpaw’s vision still swam with every calculated move he made. One wrong move, one wrong pawstep and Yarrowpaw would end up face-down on the ground. He already lacked the natural ability to move gracefully, there was no way Yarrowpaw would be able to naturally catch himself if he fell!

Pushing the thought aside, Yarrowpaw slowly grew from hugging the branch with his legs to half-standing, half-crouching, nails dug into the wood and tail whipping wildly to keep balance. His odd eyes, however, were shut tight— the tom couldn’t bare to look at the ground now that he wasn’t wrapped around the branch like a squirrel. ”Am I doing it? I don’t want to open my eyes…”
