It had been some time since Webshadow set paw in the Pine Grove. As he lead his patrol with him- a rather sizable one, nearly too big for his liking -he tried to recall the last time he had been here, really. Had it been when Burningwing had still been an apprentice? Stars, that was seasons ago. Maybe it had even been the previous green-leaf. Shaking his head, the dark tabby pulled his legs from the mud, stepping carefully onto the soft, dry grass. He'd hoped taking on this patrol would ease his worried mind, give him something to think about other than the soon-arriving kits... but his nerves had followed him out to the grove. It felt like something else though, something beyond his now-usual state of worry. The aggravation had worked deep into his bones, unsettling him and unseating his usual composure. His whiskers quivered as he took in his surroundings, breathing in deep. Nothing except the scents of dark mud and small prey hit his tongue, and he sighed. He would just blame it on the season, then; even under the cooling shade of night, the day's humidity had yet to fade completely. Maybe the heat had just gotten to him.

Turning on his patrol, the tom gave them a dismissive nod as his tail flicked once in either direction. "You may go. I assume at least one of you will venture off to find your own prey. Do not be gone too long, and do not stray too far." His eyes lingered especially long on Forestbreeze and Frostednight. They were capable, he knew that, but they were still young. Almost, he forbade them from venturing out of his sight at all, before he shook his head and turned away. He couldn't fuss over everyone in the Clan younger than him, as much as he'd wanted to. Without waiting for their responses, Webshadow turned away, padding further off into the clearing.

Frostednight followed the patrol in silence, while grumbling internally. Too many cats, and too large of a patrol. Her multi-colored eyes glanced at Iceheart, padding what she personally considered a "friendship-distance" away. Ignoring the whispers in her head, she mused over what to say to the she-cat. Out of everyone in ShadowClan, Iceheart was the only cat she felt she could some-what relate too. As much as she hated to admit it, her stubbornly quiet life was somewhat lonely and isolating. Glancing back to the brown and white cat, Frostednight 'put on' her most joking tone of voice which, to say the least, still sounded pretty gruff. "I bet your white paws would look even better with red on them." She remarked, before facing forward once more, remembering when they took down the predator together. The silent warrior felt content with her remark, and hoped Iceheart would be too.

Slowing to a stop, Frostednight listened to Webshadow with her expressionless face before turning to scent for prey. A rat scampered nearby, and Frostednight lumbered over to catch it. It was a swift hunt and she was successful. Returning to where the patrol departed, Frostednight plopped the rodent down and stood still for a second.

A viscously loud whisper erupted in her head and her eyes glazed over, trying to decipher in. The message was on the tip of her tongue.

Swiftheart followed along a distance behind the patrol keeping an eye on their sides in case of ambush.  She heard distantly the remark from frostednight and was sorta confused by it... she shrugged and figured she probably just heard it wrong from being a bit behind and didnt really give it much mind after that.

She nodded to webshadow and his instructions.  He was the senior most warrior on this patrol and they all went sorta in their own directions looking for prey but staying semi close like he had mentioned.

She sniffed around for a little with little luck.  However, her ears perked when she heard a song of a bird nearby, she spotted it on a low overhanging branch... Could she reach it?  hmm maybe it would be kinda hard but seeing as how she hadnt found anything else yet...

Stalking towards it she did her best to guess how high she would need to pounce and...


She jumped but the muddy ground made her back paw get stuck really bad and she did a total fail where she landed smack down face first in the muddy earth below. The icky swampish area of shadowclan covering her white pelt in ick and mud.


The bird titlted its head looking at her for a second and then flew off as if it was laughing at her attempt.

With a glance behind him, Webshadow watched as his patrol slowly spread out. It looked like hunting had gone well for most of them, though he noticed Swiftheart slipping and leaving her quarry to remain on its branch. She will catch the next one, he thought, a pang of pity hitting him, before turning on his pads and continuing the direction he'd been moving.

The scent of a squirrel caught his nose soon enough, but as he followed after the scent trail, his anxiety grew tenfold. He couldn't quite place it, but it made his fur bristle, raising him to twice his size; forced his paws to stop right in their tracks. Underneath the squirrel's trail, another scent hit him. Distant, but steadily growing stronger. It was familiar, but muddied by the smells of pine needles and churned earth and the sizable patrol. It hit him like a monster, though, making his heart freeze mid-beat. For a scarily long time, Webshadow just stared out into the tree-line, eyes wide and tail lashing. When nothing came, he turned away slowly– keeping his eye on the trees, best he could –before slowly, slowly venturing back in the direction of his patrolmates. He would warn them to be extra careful, and find something else to hunt.

No sooner than he'd taken two steps, the sound of branches rattling hit him. Not just that, but breaking; something heavy was crashing through the brush. And getting closer, fast. A moment before he could've seen it, another noise hit that made his blood run cold: the sound of barking. Excited, hungry. Whirling around, the Webshadow watched as a pair of dogs came ripping into a view, their yaps swelling until they were both baying their blood-thirsty glee, drool flying from between their teeth. With raised hackles and horror in his eyes, Webshadow wheeled back around and sprang into a bound, lifting his voice to yowl, "Dogs! Drop the hunt, now! Be–" His warnings were cut off by a strained yelp.

Thunderous pawsteps had gained on him faster than he thought, and hot breath hit his fur a moment before teeth did. Thick and heavy, they bore down on one of his hind legs, ripping through flesh as the dog lifted him from the ground. A bellow of pain left Webshadow, and he hung half-limp, forepaws swinging desperately in an attempt to connect with something, anything. Then the pressure deepened until he felt something crack, and immediately he felt his stomach roll. It was all he could do to keep himself from overturning the contents of his stomach. The pain that hit him was searing, blinding, and he couldn't swallow down the screech of agony. He was dropped shortly after, but not for long; the other dog had found interest in him, sniffing at his leg before heavy jaws closed against his hip. The tabby hardly registered the fact he'd been lifted off the earth again, his nerves focused solely on keeping him breathing, keeping his conscious. The last time he had felt pain like this... it'd been at the Gathering. The dog's head shook, left-right-left, and another horrible wail left Webshadow. Before he was tossed back to the earth, watching through a foggy eye as the pair rounded on his patrol, he wondered whether or not he would survive this.
