Having roused Murkypaw from her nest around sunset, Harechaser led her niece from camp, heading in the direction of the pine grove. "Alright, we'll work on hunting today." Hopefully Murkypaw would have better luck than she'd had with hunts being interrupted by all manner of predators. If not, Harechaser would do everything she could to keep the young apprentice from getting hurt. She'd only been one for a couple of days. It had been enough for Murkypaw to start to grasp the basics, and enough for Harechaser to overthink how she would train her.
She came to a stop at the edge of the pine grove, ears pricked and jaws slightly parted. The night air was a little too warm for her liking, but she could hear prey scuffling about in the grass and among the roots of the pine trees. "Now, what can you scent?" There were several small rodents and lizards around, but she'd let Murkypaw choose her prey.

OOC: read some things, i apologise if i mess up it has been a hot minute since i last used any sort of system on this site
IC: Murkypaw was, honestly, super excited to go on a hunting trip with her mentor. She knew some of the basics, hoping she could get a head start on training, but she was a loyal cat and a great listener, so she knew she wouldn't of fallen behind anyway. Despite the strong excitement running through her body, Murkypaw managed to keep herself completely and utterly calm. She followed her aunt out through the territory. The Pine Grove... She observed as the pair slowly got closer to the oddly unnerving area.
She nodded at Aunt Harechaser as she spoke, before scenting the air, ears pricked and one silvery paw slightly raised. "Mouse!" She purred excitedly, flicking her ears towards the direction of the scent, she picked up a faint scratching noise, but she couldn't see it, not yet.

"Good," Harechaser mewed softly, nodding at Murkypaw. "Go for it, Murkypaw. Remember, keep your tail still, and your weight spread evenly so you can better keep your balance. Stay downwind, too." The wind was blowing the scent of the mouse towards them right now, so hopefully she wouldn't have too much difficulty in getting close to her prey. Harechaser knew from first-paw experience that Shadowclanners were not the only predators hunting in the dark however, and so stepped back to watch, keeping a careful eye on their surroundings. Hopefully they would be lucky enough to avoid any encounters tonight and would be able to focus on just hunting.

Murkypaw soaked in as much information as she could, trying to take in the most information as possible. She turned towards the sound, crouching, spreading her weight as easily as she could, keeping her tail as still as possible. She took in a deep breath, and approached the mouse. She could see it, now. All she needed was to catch it. It was the biggest mouse she had seen (though that might've just been perspective), probably enough to feed two older kits! With a grin slowly forming on her face, she got ready to pounce...
And she felt her teeth sink into the fur of the rodent!
With a purr of pride, she strutted over to Aunt Harechaser, head high in the air, yellow eyes shining. "Looth whath Ig cauthd!" She mewed happily through the fur of the mouse. Murkypaw decided to place the prey down at her paws. "What next, Aunt Harechaser?" She mewed politely, licking a tuft of fur on her chest.

Murkypaw was quick to do as instructed, and Harechaser hung back, not wanting to be the one to accidentally scare off her prey if she could help it. Murkypaw caught the mouse however, turning and practically strutting over to Harechaser with her catch. "Good catch, Murkypaw!" Harechaser purred, "Bury it - between the roots of that tree would be fine. We'll pick it up on our way back to camp." Her fluffy ginger tail waved, indicating the tree roots in question.
She turned, and movement in the longer grasses off to the side caught her attention. Dropping into a crouch, Harechaser crept forward. Alas, Shadowclanners were not the only hunters in the night. The rush of air above signaled a bird of prey, and instinctively, Harechaser reared up with a hiss. Talons caught the edge of her shoulder, but not before her claws caught the owl in turn. This wasn't how she'd planned on teaching Murkypaw to fight, but now was as good a time as any.
"Murkypaw, stay behind the owl if you can. The wings are a good target, too."
Harechaser attempted to catch a vole for -3 sp. Catch was unsuccessful and summoned an owl! 97 / 100 sp
Harechaser used Jumping Strike for -7 sp, dealing -7+3 damage. Night Finesse active, +1 damage dealt. Owl used Talon Strike for -10 sp, dealing -7 damage.

Murkypaw purred at Aunt Harechaser's approval. This is going so well! I'll be a rolemodel warrior in no time! She thought to herself before padding to the tree roots her aunt had indicated that. The silver tortoiseshell had only just dropped her piece of prey in the hole she dug under the roots when she heard something that... Didn't sound very good. Turning around after kicking a small bit of dust over her prey, she saw her aunt being attacked by...
An owl?!
Murkypaw ran towards it, ducking under its striking talons and ending up behind it. Now what? Do I have to attack it? She planned several different moves in her head, she wasn't that skilled at fighting yet, but planning out her steps had to be better than swiping away blindly, right? After a little moment's thought, she decided to attack the predator's wing with snapping teeth, digging in deep before stumbling away, spitting out feathers.

"Thanks," Harechaser panted, methodically slashing at the owl's other wing. She didn't enjoy fighting nearly as much as hunting, but it had to be done sometimes and this would be a good learning opportunity for Murkypaw, even if she would rather her niece be nowhere near a fight at all. The owl was struggling, but with both Shadowclanners attacking its' wings, the struggles were already growing much weaker. It had seemed to realize the mistake of attacking a Shadowclanner, but it didn't seem keen on simply running, rather striking out with talons again at Harechaser's shoulder.
Harechaser used Front Paw Strike for -7 sp, dealing -8 damage. Night Finesse active, +1 damage dealt. Owl used Talon Strike for -10 sp, dealing -7 damage

Murkypaw winced as the owl continued to attack Aunt Harechaser, despite seeming so much more weaker. It just won't give up! Maybe one more attack can finish it off... She worried for a single moment. What if I'm not good enough..? She lowered her tail, shaking off the bad thoughts. No, I can do this! Murkystar could, I'm sure! She still had to prove to that Marshmallow cat that she was, in fact, good enough to share Murkystar's name.
She took in a small breath and launched herself at the owl, her claws sinking into its feathers as she dug in as hard as she could. "C'mon..." She muttered, but she soon felt no-more resistance as the owl fell to the two cats' claws. She sheathed her claws, smiling up to her mentor. "We did it! We took down an entire owl! Wait until our clanmates hear about this!"
Murkypaw used Jumping Strike! -6 7 HP (+1 Night Finesee) and -7 SP

The owl crumpled to the ground, though Harechaser was careful to keep her paws on it until she was sure it had stopped moving completely. Just in case. She didn't want to take any chances. Her mismatched gaze shifted to Murkypaw, carefully observing her for signs of injury. Nothing that Harechaser could tell, which was good. "Are you alright?" She asked anyways, of course. It was only the right thing to do. Her own wounds stung, but she wouldn't show it in front of the apprentice. Fuzzypaw could look at them when they got back to camp, anyways. It would be fine.
Murkypaw seemed downright enthusiastic, which alleviated much of Harechaser's worry. "You did very well, Murkypaw. That wasn't how I wanted to introduce you to combat, but I suppose it couldn't be helped." She mewed, "There's no sense in leaving it here, so we might as well bring it back to camp with your earlier catch. What's left of the feathers will make nice nest-lining, too."
