Halfway [closed]

Another day, another hunting party.

Owlshriek sat at the entrance of the camp, tail wrapped around his paws while he waited. The sun had just begun shining its rays over the trees in the distance, though clouds threatened to overtake it with their puffy white shade. The warrior watched the clouds drift lazily on. As soon as Kitespring was up and ready, they both would head over to the Beech Copse. Poppyshine had advised them to hunt there, so it would be their first stop during the hunt.

With a yawn, he glanced away from the clouds and towards the warrior's den.

Kitespring padded towards Owlshriek. The two of them were going on a hunting patrol today, and she didn't actually know him that well. The most that she knew was that he was impulsive and easy-to-anger, and that Poppyshine seemed to like him regardless. He also went to the apprentice games that Poppyshine had suggested to everyone when she was an apprentice, where he built a rivalry between him and Rushtalon.

She looked back at the RiverClan deputy in the middle of cam, a wistful look on her face. She couldn't confess to her.

Turning back to Owlshriek, the russet she-cat smiled at him. "Hey," she said, smiling at Owlshriek. She was never really that comfortable talking to anyone else besides her family and Poppyshine, so when talking to another of her clanmates it felt awkward and weird. "We're heading out to the Beech Copse, right?"

"Kitespring." Owlshriek greeted, rising to his paws and giving his muscles a large stretch. "That's the location. But, if we don't find anything good, we could head to the Sunning Rocks." Seeing she was ready, Owlshriek gave her a nod and began the walk towards the Beech Copse. He didn't know Kitespring too well, she was rather shy from what he understood. So, Owlshriek didn't go out of his way to talk to her. Funny, though. They were related through Jaystar. Ducking under a batch of reeds, they arrived at the location. "Alright, call if you need any help, alright?' He mewed, looking back to double-check. Satisfied, he turned to the clearing and moved closer to the roots of the trees. There seemed to be something moving in the grass. A thin tail poked out of the grass, flicking back and forth as Owlshriek heard the cracking of a nut.

It was occupied. Good. Owl moved to leap, but it seemed another creature wanted it too. The creature lunged at him, bitting his shoulder. Hissing in pain, Owlshriek called; "Snake--" Then, a deep hiss of pain.

Kitespring padded alongside Owlshriek. She usually wasn't the one to initiate conversation, so the trip to the Beech Copse was somewhat quiet. When Owlshriek told her to call if she needed any help, she agreed. "Okay," she said, searching for a creature to hunt. Before she could find anything, however, she heard Owlshriek shout, causing her to turn around. Running towards Owlshriek, the russet she-cat bit at the snake.

Kitespring used Snap at Snake, costing 7 stamina. Snake's Serpentine Movement causes the attack to miss!

Grateful for the backup, Owlshriek tossed his head to look at her for just a short moment. "Thanks, Kitespring. Let's get this snake." Then, with renewed fury, the tom lashed out at its form, using his uninjured leg to prevent further damage.

The snake dodged around Owlshriek's swipe and then latched onto Owlshriek's flank. The warrior let out yet another hiss, spinning to the side as the creature hung on. But, leaving it open to attacks from Kitespring

Kitespring nodded curtly at Owlshriek. As the dark gray tabby swiped back at the snake, the serpent quickly dodged and latched onto him. Realizing that Owlshriek was in danger now, the russet she-cat attacking the serpent. "Get off of him!" she shouted, slashing at it with her unsheathed claws.

Kitespring used Front Paw Strike on Snake, dealing 8 damage and costing 7 stamina.

Thankful Kitespring was able to land a hit, the tom spun around, trying to dislodge the snake. If anything it bit harder, causing the warrior to finch for a moment. It was a smaller snake than the ones he found on the sunning rocks. Small enough that...well... Owlshriek's eyes narrowed. Bunching his muscles up, the tom leaped into the air, twisting against his better judgment, and landed on his side that the snake bit onto. With a crack and a thud, the two hit the ground. As Owlshriek leaped back to his feet, winded after knocking the air out of himself, he looked down at the snake whose body twisted at an odd angle. Slightly amused, Owlshriek glanced back at Kitespring. "I'd advise avoiding the snakes." Owlshriek laughed, shaking his pelt out. "I suppose some cat might want to try eating a snake." Now Owlshriek, though.

Digging it a hole, he buried it to pick up later. Satisfied, he turned back to Kitespring to give her a nod to continue.

Owlshriek uses Headbutt, using 5 stamina and dealing 7 damage. The snake is dead!

After Kitespring's attack, Owlshriek's wince caused her to worry that her attack had caused more harm than good. When Owlshriek pounced upward and landed soundly on his side, Kitespring ran towards him. "Are you okay?" she said, but by then the tom was already back on his feet. Silently breathing a sigh of relief, the russet she-cat smiled at him. "I guess so," Kitespring said with a smile. They hadn't really talked very much, but she felt somewhat comfortable with Owlshriek now.

At the tom's second comment, Kitespring chuckled. "Honestly, I've always wondered what snake tasted like," she said softly. "Of course, I'll wait to see if anyone else wants it, but if nobody takes it I might be interested." Stars, that was a mouse-brained thing to say. Now he's going to think that she was weird. And she didn't think he'd be as forgiving as Poppyshine or her siblings when it came to stuff like that.

"I guess I should go and find something to catch," she said awkwardly, gazing across the clearing. Finding a sparrow perched on a nearby branch, the russet she-cat dropped into her hunter's crouch, trying to get closer to it. Each step carefully plotted, Kitespring was able to get close enough to pounce at the sparrow. Though it noticed her at the last second, she was still able to catch it before it could fly away. Nipping its neck, she brought it back to Owlshriek. "I caught it," she said, her mouth full from the bird. Digging a hole in the ground next to the hole with a snake in it, the russet she-cat placed the bird she caught in it.

Kitespring attempted to catch a sparrow, costing 3 stamina. Hunt was a success!

Owlshriek gave her an amused nod. "I had to kill a few as an apprentice, and I can't say I didn't try it. It isn't bad, per say. Does taste a little bit like a bird, just a bit chewier." Not that it matters too much, food was food. Even if he had prey he preferred more than snakes. Giving Kitespring a wave with his tail, he went a bit further out from the clearing to avoid where prey had been alerted to their little fight. The scurrying behind him caused the tom to freeze and quickly rotate.

The mouse and Owlshriek made eye contact. Then, at the same moment, they both broke out into a sprint.

For a few fox lengths they raced, before the mouse dove into its burrow, big enough only for Owlshriek to get his paw in. Deflating, he let out a sigh and pulled back.
