Harechaser had been eager to go on patrol. Nightstalker was her older brother, but he was also deputy now, and Iceheart was respectable warrior even if Harechaser didn't know her well. With Rosepaw being... well, Rosepaw, Harechaser needed to prove herself just as capable as any other cat, she'd decided.

Iceheart had spotted a rabbit, and Harechaser hung back, keeping well out of the way. They were tricky to catch, but the older she-cat managed it. Harechaser could smell a similar scent on the wind, and turned to follow. Hares, as she'd figured out, were a very nice thing to have on the fresh-kill pile. Especially compared to frogs and lizards. It wasn't long before the tortoiseshell spotted the hare in question, carefully keeping herself downwind of it. Creeping closer, the wind shifted slightly... The hare bolted, and Harechaser tore after it.

She wasn't fast enough this time, however, and the hare quickly sped away from her. Harechaser slowed reluctantly, gazing after it before turning back to the patrol sheepishly. "Frogdung." Harechaser muttered, "I almost had that!"

Rosepaw was eager to finally get the chance to actually do stuff other cats got to do. As much fun as she had playing around, it did actually take a toll on the apprentice, as she longed to catch up with her littermates. And thankfully, Nightstalker was giving her a chance. Although it was a bit nerve-wracking, being surrounded by warriors who knew what they were doing (even if one of them was literally the same age as her), and they probably expected Rosepaw to at the very least know the basics.

At least she was not going first.

Iceheart had spotted a rabbit, and Rosepaw watched with awe as the older warrior tore after it, grasping it in her claws. Alright, then, Rosepaw could probably do that.

Harechaser had also spotted a piece of prey, a hare, that had slipped out of her grasp. And Rosepaw's whiskers twitched with amusement. "Good thing they named you Harechaser and not Harecatcher!" She butted her head against her sister's shoulder, giggling, before she went off to find her own prey. After all, she couldn't get away with just watching forever.

Although she could get away with easier prey, she bet, spotting a vole among the leaves. Although she didn't know what, it was eating something, and she bet it would never see her coming. Leaping forward, she caught the creature in her jaws, returning to the group with the first piece of prey she had ever caught before, and clearly very proud of it.

"Ah, I guess you got Murkystar's side of the family." Nightstalker joked, his voice a bit quieter than usual so as to not spook all of the prey nearby. "I think this should be the last time we hunt here for a bit. There's been a lot of hunting pressure in this area lately, so we might have to eat some rats for a bit." Nightstalker mewed contemplatively, looking at each cat in the party for their opinion on his proposal. He did not wait for an answer for long though, as he had spotted a lizard, just briefly. He rushed forwards, but luck had been on his side for once, and he snatched the snake in his jaws with a crunch.

Harechaser's fur prickled in discomfort at Rosepaw's words, and she ducked her head, trying to hide the sense of embarrassment she felt at the missed catch. Mistyfalcon and Nightstalker were hailed as excellent hunters, so why couldn't she emulate that first catch as an apprentice? Her older brother's words weren't the most comforting - she hardly knew what Murkystar was like and thus had no frame of reference to compare, and Iceheart's nod was similarly not as reassuring, but she gave them both a small smile anyways. She knew warriors didn't always catch everything, she just...

"Rats? Wonderful." She knew Nightstalker was probably right, they didn't want to overhunt the pine grove, after all. But rats? Eugh! She glanced at Iceheart, surely the other she-cat wasn't enthusiastic about that idea either.

Turning her focus back to finding more prey, the young warrior eventually picked up the scent of vole. Spotting it among the grass, she crouched and stalked forward. Maybe she'd been a little overeager before with the hare. This time she would catch it and Rosepaw would have no room to talk. She was sure of it.

And then she smelled fox. And blood. Harechaser whirled around, all thoughts of prey forgotten as fear jolted through her. Iceheart, it seemed, was in trouble. The only thing Harechaser had ever fought was a raccoon with her mentor, and Swiftheart had told her to stay back. Harechaser had disobeyed then, more interested in protecting her mentor and sister. And she doubted anyone would tell her to stay back when her clanmate was in trouble, not now that she had actual training under her pelt.

Harechaser leaped forward, slashing at the fox's shoulder.

Rosepaw made a show of gagging when Nightstalker mentioned eating rats. "Come on, no cat needs that sort of punishment! I would rather eat crowfood than rats!"

Harechaser had walked off, and Rosepaw was getting ready to as well, when Iceheart lunged for something. Had she found more prey? This close to the group? Except those were not the sounds of a hare. Whipping her head around, Rosepaw watched as Iceheart fought with a fox. Her sister also noticed, and leapt into the fray, and Rosepaw quickly followed suit.

She was going to learn how to fight very quickly today, it seemed.

Nightstalker hissed with anger and rage, as he watched Iceheart lunge for a fox, and the red predator giving her a thrash in turn. Nightstalkers lips peeled back, and he turned on his paws and made his way over with pounding paw steps. He would NOT let a fox touch his clan-mates, and certainly not Iceheart. He was their deputy, their leader, and he had to show them that he was strong! But at least he did not need to order them to fight, each leaping into the fray on their own.

But this was not the first fox he had fought, and would not be the last. Nightstalker reared onto his back legs, drawing his front paws into the air and bringing it down onto the fox's head with a loud grunt, driving its face into the dirt and mud below the group. "Eat dirt, fox dung! We'll show you the terror that Shadowclan is capable of!" He roared, shouting to rally his patrol in spirit as they fought.
