A breeze ruffled Brackenwing's short fur, and she inhaled slowly. Hares and rabbits had been abundant recently, the evidence being Windclan's fresh-kill pile being better-stocked than Brackenwing had ever seen it. Still, there was always room for more prey, and so she had gone hunting with Whisperpaw. The apprentice seemed to be a quiet sort, and that was just fine by Brackenwing.
Something moved in the distance, and the marbled tabby made her way toward it, the scent of hare confirming that prey was up and about. Dropping into a crouch, she gingerly crept forward. Brackenwing wasn't as fast as some of her clanmates, her body was slightly stockier, more suited for strength than the bursts of speed other cats could put on with effortless ease. So she relied on trying to get closer to her prey rather than trying to outrun it.
And then she froze, the rush of around above her head the only warning she received that she and Whisperpaw weren't the only hunters on the moors.
"Foxdung!" Brackenwing yelped as claws raked across her back, twisting to snap at the hawk in retaliation. She yanked back hard, and the hawk thrashed it's wings.
Brackenwing attempted to catch a hare for -3 sp. Catch was ? 117 / 120 sp
Hawk used Swoop on Brackenwing for -15 sp, dealing -9 damage. Brackenwing used Tail Yank on Hawk for -15 sp, dealing -10 damage.

Whisperpaw gasped when the hawk dove down, and winced when its claws tore at Brackenwing. They were quick to dive in again when Brackenwing yanked on the bird’s tail, and Whisperpaw bit down on its shoulder. They weren’t fast enough to go for its neck for a killing blow, but it was something, and they added a quick slash of claws on top of it. They breathed heavily as they stumbled back on their feet, but their focus was on taking the hawk down before Brackenwing took more blows.
Whisperpaw used Snap, dealing 6 damage and costing 7 SP. Whisperpaw also used Desperate Blows, dealing 4 damage and costing 7 SP.

Brackenwing spared a grateful glance in Whisperpaw's direction as he snapped at the hawk. Using the distraction, Brackenwing dug her fangs into the base of the hawk's wing, following up with a quick slash of her claws down the hawk's flank. It thrashed and broke free of her grip, but the damage the two Windclanners had done had already weakened it considerably.
Brackenwing used Snap for -7 sp, dealing -10 damage. Brackenwing used Swift Strike for -10 sp, dealing -7 damage. Hawk is no longer stunned.
Brackenwing (forgot moor runner was active so adjusted hp by 1) 42 / 50 hp 85 / 120 sp (102 - 7 - 10)

The opportunity that Brackenwing provided for Whisperpaw did not go unnoticed, and they rushed forward to slam against the hawk’s side. It rolled away in the meadow grass before picking itself up and shrieking. It knew when it was outmatched, and flew off before either of them could deliver a killing blow. Whisperpaw sighed, a bit disappointed that they couldn’t kill it for its feathers; Coyotegrin would have really liked them.
They looked back to Brackenwing and walked over. “Are you alright?” they asked, checking their injuries. Thankfully it was just the one attack from the hawk, so Brackenwing at least did not appear too badly harmed.
Whisperpaw used Headbutt, dealing 4 damage and costing 5 SP. The hawk has fled!
Brackenwing 42 / 50 hp 85 / 120 sp

Her attacker fled before either Windclanner could deal a killing blow, and Brackenwing watched it fly off through narrowed eyes. Hopefully the hawk had learned a lesson not to mess with them in the future. "Thanks, Whisperpaw. I'm fine, I think, they're just scratches." She mewed, turning her head to assess the damage. Not that she could see much of the scratches, they stung but she didn't think they were too deep or anything. "So much for hunting without running into trouble." Her gaze returned to Whisperpaw's pale frame. "I don't want to return to camp with empty paws, feel like trying to hunt some more?"

With Brackenwing’s confirmation that she was fine, Whisperpaw relaxed again. They nodded and tried to hold themselves up a bit taller. “I can go for a bit longer. Fighting tires me out faster, but I’d also like to make sure we return with something.” They looked around and opened their mouth to breathe in scent deeply. When they caught the scent, they began moving to catch sight of it. It didn’t take long before they spotted the hare, which made Whisperpaw’s heart swell. Rabbits and hares weren’t uncommon in WindClan, but Whisperpaw always preferred hares to rabbits because of their size. They were still difficult to catch, especially given the power in their long legs. But Whisper already helped fight off a hawk—why not go for the challenge?
They crept forward, close to the ground. Coyotegrin had been helping them learn how to hunt better given their low stamina. They were a large cat, but still spindly. Their white fur stuck out against the green of newleaf, so they had to keep behind the prey. Carefully, gently, quietly…Whisperpaw sprang forward and managed to latch onto the hare before it could bolt. After moment of wrestling, Whisperpaw managed to bite down onto its neck and it went limp. They breathed a sigh of relief and sat back on their paws. Newleaf really was easier to hunt in.
Whisperpaw attempted to catch some prey and was successful! Used 3 SP (8 / 30 remaining).

"Nice catch!" Brackenwing mewed, then immediately shut her mouth at the sight of movement in the distance. With a flick of her dark-tipped tail, she angled toward it, circling wide in an effort to avoid being seen. Her pelt wasn't as pale as Whisperpaw's, but she was no match for a hare in a race, either. She'd get behind it, then get as close as she could before going in for the kill. Luckily, the wind didn't shift, and this time there were no stupid birds to interrupt her.
Powerful paws struck at the hare as Brackenwing's full weight landed on it, and the hare twisted, lashing out with a hind paw that just brushed Brackenwing's pale belly fur. She sank her fangs into the hare's throat, cutting off its' frantic struggling, then turned to Whisperpaw with a smile. "That went better." She mewed cheerfully.
Brackenwing attempted to catch another hare for -3 sp. Catch was ? 82 / 120 sp

Whisperpaw brightened when Brackenwing successfully caught her own prey. “Much better,” they agreed as they picked up their hare. Through its fur in their teeth, they mewed, “I probably shouldn’t push my luck…We should get back now that we have something to show for our efforts.” They felt exhausted after the fighting and catching the hare, even though they knew that there was still a lot more time in the day. Maybe after a nap, they’d be up for joining another patrol later. “Thank you for letting me accompany you.”
