Honeypaw trotted obediently behind Iceheart as they headed out of camp. Iceheart was going to teach him how to fight today. Ordinarily, Honeypaw would be excited to learn something new. He always is, after all. But he’s been anxious about learning how to fight since the battle. He’s scared he’s a coward and it’ll show the moment he tried to actually fight, even if it was just a spar with his mentor. So nerves prickled under Honeypaw’s skin as he padded across the soft ground.
He glanced over at Iceheart. If Iceheart thought he could do it then… then maybe he’ll be okay. “Where are we going to practice?” He asked softly.

Iceheart was still concerned about Honeypaw. He had been so quiet as of late, even after their discussion, and the longer it went on, the more concerned Iceheart grew. “Not far from camp. We’re going to a more open and dry area of the marsh and then I will show you the basics.” She still felt terrible that she hadn’t gotten around to teaching Honeypaw the basics of fighting before the battle at the Gathering. She couldn’t have known, but that thought didn’t make her feel better. The sooner Iceheart could teach him now, the better.
They arrive at a good spot and she turns back to Honeypaw. “Alright. We are going to go over some simple moves to get the hang of things. I’m sure you know how to hit with your paw, but you need to learn how to use your claws with it. It will come very naturally once you get used to it.” She holds out a hand to demonstrate and digs at the soft muddy ground. “I hope you won’t have to fight another cat any time soon, but in case you do—warriors do not fight to kill, and you should not do so unless you are about to be killed yourself. You claw to cause pain, and get them to flee. Cats want to escape with their lives, after all.”

Honeypaw was uncharacteristically quiet and serious while he listened to Iceheart, sitting in front of her with a frown and staring intently at her. As she talked about killing, an image of Fawnpatch’s death and the death of several others at the battle flashed in Honeypaw’s mind, and he shuddered a bit at the thought. “Yes, Iceheart.” He can’t imagine wanting to kill in the first place. The thought of taking another cat’s life, even in self defense or the defense of his clan, made him feel sick.
He dragged his eyes to Iceheart’s demonstration, and reached out a paw to copy her movements, digging his claws into the ground and trying to picture the fur of another cat instead.

Iceheart hoped that her anxious glances weren’t too obvious as she watched Honeypaw. Where were his questions? His bubbly personality? All she saw was the haunted look in his gaze and nervous motions as he dug into the ground.
“You’ll also need to learn how to defend yourself,” Iceheart explained. She moved over and gently pushed him to the ground. She felt like if she moved too swiftly, he would simply shatter. When he was on the ground, she pinned him down. “If a cat pins you like this, you need to try and make your body small, roll over, and throw them off with your weight. Give it a try.”

Honeypaw went easily when Iceheart pushed him down. He frowned, trying to conceptualize Iceheart’s explanation. He squirmed on the ground for a moment, struggling under her hold as he struggled to make his body small, as she said. Finally, he found a position that felt correct, his muscles tensing as he shifted underneath Iceheart, preparing to push her off.
However, he can’t get fully underneath her and can’t get a good grip, so while he pushes at her, he doesn’t actually… get anywhere. Were it a real fight and his claws were out, he’d cause at least some damage, but of course he’s carefully keeping his claws sheathed. The last thing he’d want is to actually hurt Iceheart. After a few more seconds of struggling he huffed and gave up. “I can’t get you off.” He said, looking up at Iceheart again. “I don’t get how to get a good grip on you.”
Honeypaw attempted Duck and Twist, and failed! Honeypaw is at 20/20 HP and 55/60 SP.

Iceheart hadn’t been entirely confident that Honeypaw could get out from under her. He was already her size despite being far younger, but she still had experience over him. If there was anything Iceheart had learned, it was that being a smaller cat didn’t mean that she was a weaker cat. She moved off of Honeypaw and said, “It takes practice. We’ll give it another try soon. But I want to make sure we get through a lot of things today.” She moves to a muddier area of the ground. “Because of where we live, we’ve learned to adapt with the marsh. Because of that, there’s a clever trick we ShadowClan cats know…” She swiped her paw suddenly at the mud, flicking it off in a direction. “You do something like that to a cat, and they’ll be stunned for a moment, letting you get in another attack.”

Honeypaw tried not to pout at not being able to learn the move right away. He knows it’s natural and not a big deal, but still, frustration prickled his fur. He took a deep breath, trying to tell himself it didn’t mean he would be a bad warrior just because he didn’t get it right away. He tried to focus on Iceheart instead of his racing mind, and padded across the marsh to follow her.
He watched the way she flicked the mud. He reached into the mud and flicked it as well, imitating Iceheart’s demonstration. He aimed for a tree trunk and managed to slap some mud into it, so he smiled a bit. At least he can get something right. He looks at Iceheart. “Like that?” He asked softly.

Iceheart nodded in affirmation. “Just like that,” she agreed. “It won’t be very helpful if anything should happen away from ShadowClan territory, but it’s very effective against predators and any invaders into our lands. It is also important that you learn how to dodge away from attacks and hit back.”
She moved back so she was facing Honeypaw. “I’m going to try to hit you. I want you to roll away and hit me back instead. Alright?” She waited a moment to make sure that he was ready before she lunged forward, swinging her paw at him for a smack.

Honeypaw listened to Iceheart closely, watching her move. He frowned in concentration and tensed up in preparation to move, meeting her eyes and giving a little nod of affirmation before she lunged at him.
His roll was a little delayed, as he was not used to moving so quickly like that, so Icepaw still grazed his fur. However, he does manage to get back to his feet a few seconds later and swipe at her in return.

Iceheart nodded confidently as she turned to face him. “Good! That’s already a good dodge. With practice, you’ll only get faster and be able to anticipate it easier.” She straightened up and gave him a confident little nod. “I think you’ve got a lot of good instincts already, Honeypaw. You should remember to trust those instincts. You’ll do great in battle.”

Honeypaw looked at Iceheart in surprise at her last comment. He looked down at his paw, still muddy from the earlier trick, then back at his mentor. “You really think so?” He asked softly, settling back onto his hindquarters and, for just a moment, letting the doubt seep into his voice. He doesn’t quite know where all this doubt and anxiety surrounding fighting is coming from. He just so desperately wants to do right by his clan; and he’s so terrified he won’t be good enough.

Iceheart stopped for a moment. She knew that tone—that soft uncertain voice of doubt that hinted at a greater storm beneath the surface. She nodded again, with quieter confidence. “I do,” she promised. After a moment, she meowed, “Let’s keep going. Let’s try what I showed you—again.” And so they continued, Iceheart still going at a steady pace, but making sure to encourage Honeypaw along the way.
