Subject: Stormkit's Apprentice Ceremony Wed 18 May 2022 - 22:49
Poppyshine
The Dark Forest had been thrown out and a sense of normalcy had begun to settle over the clan. Poppyshine was relieved that things were back to normal. She knew, however, that for the kits approaching apprentice age, it was anything but normal. They’d grown up with the Dark Forest and it was more important now than ever that the apprentices-to-be received mentors that would guide them to understanding what the world was like now. That meant that it was time for her to lead her first apprentice ceremony. She took a deep breath to center herself before she stepped up and raised her voice to call out to her clan. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting.” Her heart hammered in her chest. She hadn’t fumbled the words, which was a relief. Now focus could be given to the up-and-coming apprentice.
Stormkit obediently followed his mother out to sit below the Willow Branch. He wrinkled his nose as his mother licked him clean (again), not understanding why she was fussing so much. It was just another ceremony. There have been a lot of those lately, along with a lot of other changes. Stormkit hadn’t been there for any of the battle, hiding safely away, but he had seen the aftermath. And he’s been anxious and worried and confused, and generally has been just trying to stay out of everyone’s way.
This stays true now, as he leans lightly against his mother, looking up at their new deputy. He liked Poppyshine, she always greeted him in the nursery and spoke kindly to him. He looked up at her with bright eyes, curious as to what the ceremony was being called for.
Poppyshine silently scanned the cats that arrived and caught sight of Stormkit with his mother. She gave him a gentle, encouraging smile and flicked her tail to indicate that he should come forward. When he did, she meowed, “Stormkit, you have reached your age of six moons and are ready to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Stormpaw.” She looked over to another cat that she knew was in the crowd and continued, “Your mentor will be Owlshriek. He will teach you all that you need to know.”
She had seen Owlshriek play with Stormpaw as a kit. Stormpaw was so shy that she thought it was best to pair him with someone that he was already comfortable with. Owlshriek had a good heart and she enjoyed being with him; he was a great hunter and a formidable opponent too. He would teach Stormpaw well. She stepped down from the branch and joined in the celebration of their newest apprentice.

Owlshriek watched the gathering from near the entrance. Oddly enough, he wasn't scheduled for a patrol that day and had opted to do some hunting himself. But, he waited for the announcement first. Instantly, yellow eyes caught the form of the kit he had played with not too long ago. An apprentice already? Certainly, his mentor would be happy with Stormpaw. He was a smart cat with a drive to do well. Probably one of the two most important things a warrior needs. Everything else comes with time, he was sure.
Oh! The warrior perked, eyes catching Poppyshine's for a moment. He was to be a mentor to young Stormpaw. A blast of anxiety ran up his spine. Could he be as good as Hollyleaf? Could he leave Stormpaw with a legacy of good mentors? Shaking the nervousness out of his coat, Owlshriek made his way towards his new apprentice, a rare smile on his face. "Stormpaw, I promise to do my best. As long as you promise to do your's." As the warrior touched noses with Stormpaw, he knew that the apprentice would certainly do their best.

Stormkit-- no, Stormpaw-- was shocked. He had hardly registered that another moon had passed and that he was due for his apprenticeship. For a second he half-wondered if there was some kind of mistake. Then he shook his head a bit, shaking the shock off of him, and stood up to approach and stand beneath the Willow branch, trying to stand tall and seem brave and proud.
He turned his head as his mentor was announced, finding Owlshriek’s eyes and giving him a little smile as Owlshriek approached. He looked up at Owlshriek with a serious gaze as Owlshriek spoke to him, and he said a soft, sincere, “I will.” He stretched up to meet Owlshriek’s nose with his own.
