Chasing the Storm [Batsong]

Clouds were heavy in the sky, the air was warm and just a touch too humid, and Brackenwing's tail twitched in annoyance at the promise of a storm brewing. while patrolling with Batsong was nice enough, Brackwing's mood was soured by the weather and the unwanted tagalongs to their patrol. In an effort to ignore them, she had followed the scent of hare across the territory, watching as the creature poked its' head out of one of the many burrows, probably checking if the coast was clear. Unfortunately for the hare, Windclan needed to be fed, and the grass was now long enough to do a better job at concealing Brackenwing's marbled tabby pelt if she was careful. Quietly, Brackenwing crept up on the creature. Once she was close enough, she had every intention of adding it to the clan's fresh kill pile.

A loud hiss sounded as she leaped, and Brackenwing silently cursed the dark forest cat that had decided to oh-so-helpfully intrude on her hunting. Of course they didn't like her, that was fine. She didn't like them either. The hare darted back towards the burrow, and Brackenwing followed, determined to catch the stubborn creature. Futile attempt, of course, she wasn't fast for a Windclanner, with the wrong build. The tightness of the tunnels were no real help in this situation, the hare clearly knowing its' home better than she did, and so Brackenwing backed out of the tunnel, shaking dirt from her pelt and glaring up at the dark forest cat.

Not that she'd engage them in a fight, she knew better than that. But it was nice to fantasize about running her claws through their filthy pelt.

Batsong had watched quietly not moving at all as Brackenwing went after the hare, she didnt want to mess her up.  Then one of the Dark cats messed up the hunt alerting the hare. Batsong winced as the hare got away and Brackenwing was understandably very angry... She was too.

The dark forest cats were taunting her. They wanted Brackenwing to attack... just like they had wanted Swiftsprit and Mistysky to attack.  She glared at the dark forest cats also wanting to rake her claws across them so much... but the consequences for doing so was simply not worth starting anything.  

Her overprotective nature of losing so many loved ones throughout her life kicked in however when she saw how angry Brackenwing looked.  She understood but she couldnt lose her sister the same way she lost her mother.

She stepped between the two glaring at the dark forest warrior. After that she tried to deescalate things not needing any more loses but at the same time she had to let Brackenwing know that they were right ... just very subtilty. This whole dark forest takeover had been a big balancing act and she was so tired of it.

"C-c...come on, you will g-g.get another chance" she murmured softly to her companion.

Batsong wanted no more fighting ... however at the same time if any one of these monster freaks touched Brackenwing at all she would send them back to wherever they came she vowed to herself.

Walking along with her patrolmates she soon spotted a different hare.  They were in luck the wind was calm for now and would not give away their scent to the prey.  She crouched low stalking toward the oblivious thing.

Leaping after it she was upon the it in a couple strides, it tried to bound away but the agile molly was right behind it. Using her front paw she tripped up the hare's back leg sending it tumbling to the ground where she quickly nipped its neck and held the prize happily in her jaws. Finally! some good food for their clan. The harsh season was over and even a victory as small as this made her relax a little.

"I know, I know." Brackenwing muttered, though forcing her fur to lay flat took effort. She knew engaging with the dark forest cats wasn't worth it, she knew she'd have more chances to catch prey... If their unwanted tagalongs could keep from interfering for their own amusement.

Batsong turned to find her own prey, and Brackenwing did the same. After a bit of searching she picked up the trail of another hare, quietly following it until she could make out the long ears through the grass. Muscles bunching, Brackenwing readied herself to chase after the creature.

The hare was faster, of course, and Brackenwing had little chance of catching it. Tail lashing as she slowed, she glanced around for Batsong... The Windclanner had caught her prey, naturally. "Nice catch." Brackenwing offered, before quickly turning away. At least the walking dead hadn't interfered this time, not that it had done much good for her chances. Some hunter she was, but she had to keep trying.

"T-...thanks" she grinned.

Batsong could tell the young warrior was discouraged.  She wanted to much to make them feel better... but she had no clue how.

She closed her eyes momentarily wondering what Swiftsprit would do to make Brakenwing feel better ... she sadly supposed it didn't matter ... all that mattered was what she could / would do.  She really couldn't think of much.  The hares were simply just faster than the young warrior.  It would come with practice she thought with a nod.  

She wanted so much to reassure her and give her lots of praise and reassurance... but would Brackenwing even appreciate that?  She had no idea.

As was mentioned earlier, the storm continued to loom building overhead ominously.  Batsong glanced up at the sky continuing to darken... ugh but at the same time the fresh kill food supply was dangerously low... She hated the rain and getting wet in general, her light fur was easily soaked by water and it made her freezing cold too. ... but the clan needed them to be successful on this hunt, so a little rain wasnt about to stop her.

As a couple a raindrops began to fall at the forefront of the storm she shook them off frustrated, the dark cats all grinned and snickered at this and loved seeing that she was uncomfortable.  She did her best not to pay them any mind but it was not easy.

She saw another hare a short distance away, it was returning from the fields to try and weather the storm in its underground lair... with any luck Batsong could cut it off and prevent it from doing so.

She darted towards it seeing how it was only a race to its home stealth wasnt exactly needed. The hare knew it couldnt stay out here anyways.

With great speed she easily caught the hare and quickly put it out of its misery not wanting to torture the poor thing. She purred happily. The dark forest cats were not at all happy or amused however and gave her a glare, unhappy that she had been so lucky.

Hhmmm she thought to herself, for once she let a little bit of pride in... luck had nothing to do with it... try and stop me dark cats I dare you. She thought bitterly. She didnt say anything of the sort however knowing it would bring nothing good. Instead she kept a half eye on her hunting mate Brackenwing and also kept a notice on the weather that seemed to be worsening to their "luck" ... ugh just perfect she huffed sarcastically.

Raindrops began to fall, and Brackenwing suppressed a shiver as a droplet of water landed on the back of her neck. She was aware of Batsong's eyes on her for a moment, but Brackenwing ignored her. She... Appreciated Batsong's attempt at defusing the situation before, but she needed to prove herself. They likely had time for one more attempt at hunting before the storm truly broke and she intended on not going back to camp with empty paws.

Determined, Brackenwing caught sight of another hare, and prowled forward once more. This time, the hare remained blessedly unaware as the marbled tabby crept up on it. The hare turned, probably intending to get out of the rain, and Brackenwing pounced, claws sinking into soft brown fur as she wrenched its head back and to the side. Grinning triumphantly, the young warrior turned towards Batsong, mood somewhat lightened by finally getting a catch of her own despite the fouling weather and the dark forest cats. "Finally... Should we head back before it starts to pour?" She called out to the other Windclanner.
