Two Gremlins (c)

Specklepaw had started getting used to the stinky ghost cats walking around camp. Not to say he liked them walking around like they owned the place. (Though, he had to admit they looked kinda cool.) He could... Put up with them, at least.

Apart from smelly dead cats watching over them, clan life had continued as usual, just without the stars watching over them at night. (But he wasn't a nocturnal Shadowclan cat, so it didn't make much of a difference in the day.) New apprentices had joined them in the apprentice den, and it was getting even more crowded than it was in the nursery. The newest apprentice, Mistlepaw, has recently moved in, and he didn't really want to hunt on his own, so he thought he might as well invite her.

Spotting the fluffy calico inside the apprentice's den, he stumbled over and nudged her. "Hey! We're going to hunt! You and me, right now!" He didn't even start with an introduction, he was ready to get out there and hunt!

Mistlepaw had been a bit dejected, at first, she'd been overwhelmed with the high of becoming an apprentice, finally achieving her dreams. But the brutal reality of living in a camp overrun by dead cats that threatened their lives by simply existing had burst in her bubble of glee. She particularly hated the look of Viperfang, the older tom seemed to leer at her whenever she passed by, he'd waxed about how she reminded him of his own kits. But the look in his eyes said that there was nothing sweetly nostalgic in his interest, for all she knew, he murdered his kits way back then. He had that sort of mangy look to him.

As a result, whenever Mintpool or her parents weren't calling on her, she'd taken to hiding out in the apprentice den, at least then, Viperfang couldn't corner her. So when a fellow apprentice, Specklepaw had burst into the den, calling on her to go hunting, the she-cat bounced up eagerly. "Yes! Let's do that, right now. This moment. Hunting. Where to... Specklepaw, right?"

Specklepaw jumped back a little when Mistlepaw stood up quickly. His back paws slipped, but he caught himself before he fell. "Yep! I think you're Mistlepaw, but... I don't really care that much, you seem eager to hunt anyway." He spun around, a little too fast this time, and fell sideways, his paws slipping out under him, kicking up a bunch of dust as he slid. He let out a little grunt as he hit the ground. He winced. "Mousebrained, mousebrained legs!" He hissed, his attitude suddenly switching to a more grumpy one.

He licked off some dust off of his legs, his fur still sticking upwards. He slowly lifted himself up. "Don't laugh! It's not my fault!" He sulked, turning back to the she-cat, ears falling backwards. He turned his attention back to the den's exit, slowly padding out, being more wary of his movements, yet he still stumbled every few steps.

Soon, the pair were outside of the camp, and he stopped, waiting for his denmate to join him, a grumpy look still stuck on his face.

Mistlepaw would be lying if she said that she wasn't surprised by how Specklepaw fell suddenly down onto the ground. She was worried he was injured, perhaps one of those undead bastards had maimed him for fun, but from his unsurprised reaction, it seemed this wasn't an unusual occurrence for the tom. It seemed though that he was embarrassed by his falling, so the she-cat decided to take the care and avoid bringing it up.

"I never said it was, sometimes I trip over too. It's not big deal, as long as you don't scare away all the mice." She meowed good-naturedly, trotting to keep up with the tom. As she drew close, she helped him dust off the dust from his pelt and licked down a stray tuft of fur. "Ready?"

Specklepaw's angry emotions seemed to have faded a lot quicker than they usually did when Mistlepaw came closer to him. He purred a little, unknowingly. "Yeah!" He mewed, nudging her sideways a little before trotting off into the undergrowth. He felt a bit more energy in him, even if he was stumbling sideways as he moved.

Suddenly, Specklepaw could smell something, he wasn't quite sure of what it was, however. He moved slower, closer, but he didn't crouch completely as he attempted to figure out what it was. Finally, he saw a brown shape burying itself in the snow. Mouse! He thought, excitedness running through him. He didn't know too much about hunting, but it was worth a shot!

Gathering up all the courage he had, focusing on making his back legs straight as possible, he launched himself at the mouse. It shot it's head up and tried to escape, but the snow slowed it down and Specklepaw was able to grab it. He rolled onto his back, mouse in claws, giggling as he stared at his newly caught piece of prey. "Mistlepaw! Come look!" He called for the molly, not bothering to even try pulling himself up, as it would probably end in disaster.

"You're so good!" Mistlepaw mewed quietly, brushing past the tom as her green eyes focused on the little vole up ahead. She gave him a wink and crawled onto her belly and raced out to pounce onto the vole to the best of her abilities. Back claws kicking into the earth.

"Mousedung!" She snapped as the vole got away.
