Fishing Trip [O]

Poppypaw woke early and stretched as she stood from her nest. The cold already nipped at her as she shook out her pelt. There was fresh snow that drifted down in the night, which was going to make fishing a bit of a pain. But she remembered what Perchfall taught her, and if she joined some other apprentices who went out fishing, then she was certain that together they could catch something good for the clan.

She trotted out and picked out a small fish for a quick morning breakfast. She'd eat a heartier meal that evening after she returned with food for the clan. And she would bring back some fish. She refused to believe that she wouldn't. A positive outlook on life meant that only good things would come her way; right?

As she left the camp, she walked carefully along the snowbanks in the direction of the river. She kept her eyes out for any sign of other apprentices or a warrior that she could join. She was still new to hunting and wasn't entirely confident in her skills to hunt alone, but wanted to prove herself to Perchfall by going without her. It was a double-edged sword overall.

Poppypaw didn't see anyone on the walk to the river, which was disappointing. She was hoping to have someone to talk to while she hunted. But even alone, that was fine. So long as she kept an eye out, nothing would go wrong. That's what she told herself, anyway, to ease her nerves. She hasn't hunted alone before.

The apprentice arrived at the river and sat down. She took a deep breath and took care to remember the things Perchfell taught her.

She sat close to the river but still a good length away to not fall in. She used on paw, claws unsheathed. She watched carefully through the floating snow and ice for a shadow in the river, and she sat still for as long as her energized body could until she sotted a shadow.

Poppypaw's claw lashed out and she slashed at the water. But she didn't reach in far enough and the shadow of the fish quickly darted away. She sighed, disappointed, and licked her paw now that it was covered in freezing water. She could try again; she just wanted to wait until her hand wasn't as frozen.

Poppypaw could do this. She knew that she could. She just had to focus and try again.

When her paw felt like the blood was flowing again and warmth was returning, she prepared to aim for another fish. She took a deep breath and held herself as still as she could manage. She watched another shadow of a fish swim down the river and she tensed her body. Poppypaw waited until the last possible moment to lash out.

Her claw flashed into the water, piercing the fish and yanking it out of the water. Poppypaw was so surprised that she let out a squeak and dropped the fish onto the riverbank. She stared at it for a moment until her tail began to tremble with excitement. She did it! She really did it and caught a fish! And all on her own, too. Perchfall was going to be so proud of her.

Poppypaw looked back at the river and wondered if she could catch another one. She wasn't terribly tired yet, though she was growing cold, and her paw was feeling especially frozen. But if she could bring back two fish, then that would be better for their clan. Yes, maybe she'll try just one more time.

Yes, one more. She could catch one more fish for her clan and then be on her way home.

Poppypaw made sure her fish was safely set aside and then she moved closer to the river. She tried to replicate what she had just done before. She watched the shadows of the fish carefully, waiting with a paw raised to strike.

Her fur bristled and when the time seemed right, she slashed into the water. The fish swam away without being caught, but that was not the only unfortunate thing to happen to Poppypaw. Another creature, this one long and furry with sharp teeth dashed for the same fish. Poppypaw leaped away and hissed at the weasel. With the fish having swam away, its beady eyes lay on the fish Poppypaw had caught before. It looked to Poppypaw, immediately understanding that to get the fish, it would have to take down the young cat.

The weasel leaped at Poppypaw and its jaws sank into her shoulder. Poppypaw shrieked and snapped at the weasel, biting down, but its jaws stayed firmly held onto Poppypaw.

Poppypaw attempted to catch a fish and failed, attracting a predator, for 7 SP. The Weasel used Gripping Bite, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 SP. Poppypaw used Snap, dealing 6 damage and costing 7 SP.

The pain radiating from the weasel's jaws dug deep into Poppypaw's shoulder and made her dizzy. She tried to shake the weasel off, and after it bit a bit deeper, it was finally released from her. Poppypaw limped with pain, but she still lunged at the weasel. Her jaws latched on its tail and she swung her neck suddenly, pulling it back and knocking it away. The weasel stumbled on its feet, dizzy from the disorientation and leaving itself open to Poppypaw.

The Weasel used Gripping Bite, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 SP, but was knocked off. Poppypaw used Tail Yank, dealing 7 damage and costing 15 SP. The Weasel is stunned for one turn.

The weasel was stunned, stumbling on its feet and not able to completely focus on Poppypaw. Poppypaw's body trembled with pain and she was exhausted, but she had enough energy to lash out at the weasel while it couldn't focus.

Poppypaw used all the energy she could muster to dash at the weasel. She unsheathed her claw and raked her paw down the front of its body. It let out a shrill squeal before it fell to the ground, unmoving. With heavy breaths, Poppypaw let herself slide to the ground. She felt cold and tired and her shoulder ached from the jaws of the weasel. All she wanted to do was go home and collapse into her nest.

She opened her eyes and stared at the weasel for a moment, and then at the discarded fish. Well. Much like the goose, the weasel could still be used for food. It wasn't a complete waste...she hoped.

Poppypaw pushed back up to her feet and moved to the weasel. She dragged its body onto her back so it lay over her back. She got to the fish and picked it up in her teeth. With tired paws, she finally padded her way back to RiverClan.

Poppypaw used Killing Strike, dealing 7 damage and costing 10 SP. The Weasel is dead.
