Snowy Beginnings (C)

The day after Snowpaw's apprentice ceremony dawned bright and...snowy.  Of course.  It wasn't a blizzard by any means, but as cold snowflakes fell onto his thick pelt and a chill breeze buffeted his face he suddenly wished he hadn't left his nest.  However, training was more important than a little bit of discomfort, and the gray-furred tom shook out his pelt as he slipped from the warmth of the warrior's den.  Making his way across camp in the dim morning light, he quickly poked his head into the apprentice's den and called quietly, but loudly enough to wake his two charges.  "Otterpaw, Snowpaw, it's time to head out.  Meet me by the entrance."  Once he was confident they were waking up, Ashflight took his place by a patch of reeds near the entrance, fluffing out his pelt and grooming the tangled spots as he waited.

Snowpaw bites back an indignant huff as she silently rises to her paws, shaking her head quickly to rid of any remaining fatigue. Today was her first day of training,and despite her qualms towards Otterpaw, she was determined to make her training the best it could possibly be. Ashflight was strange, a little too attached to Perchfall, but he seemed to be an adept warrior nonetheless, so Snowpaw accepted him as a mentor gratefully. Otterpaw, on the other hand…

Snowpaw, graceful and silent, slinks through the snow towards the hulking grey tom, flicking her tail and lowering her eyes as she glares back towards where she came. ”Good morning, Ashflight. What will we be training for today? I’m awake and prepared, unlike somebody.”

Otterpaw groaned to himself when he heard Ashflight’s voice, knowing he was likely calling the tom out flf training. Begrudgingly, Otterpaw pushed himself to his paws and allowed a big stretch before leaving the den. He shook off the down thats tuck to his pelt from the nest and made his way over to Ashflight and Snowpaw, a teasing glare pointed toward the she-cat. ”I’m awake and prepared, Snowpaw. Just because someone takes a split second to make themselves look decent doesn’t make you better than them. If you’d have done the same you’d have noticed you’ve got a feather stuck to your tail, you hare brain” With a smirk on his face, he took the feather that ahd gotten lodged in her fur between his teeth, spitting it to the side as if to make a point. ”Don’t worry your pretty little head, though. You still look beautiful with ruffled fur.” Otterpaw shifted his gaze to their mentor, beginning to make his way through the camp exit. ”I’m ready when you are.”

Ashflight purred as Snowpaw joined him, nodding at the little black and white she-cat.  "Good morning Snowpaw, I appreciate your promptness.  Perchfall has requested that we go hunting in case this snow turns into a blizzard, we'll need some food to hold us over."  As Otterpaw joined them as well Ashflight watched the scene that played out between the two apprentices, an amused but slightly confused smile displayed on his face.  Snowpaw's been an apprentice for one day, how has Otterpaw already gotten under her skin?  It must be a talent.  The older tom couldn't help the subtle roll of his eyes at Otterpaw's blatant attempts at flirting.  On the other paw though, he couldn't admit to being any better at that art of conversation.  He felt embarrassed butterflies in his stomach when he remembered that day with Snowpaw (Snowkit at the time), Perchfall, and Jaystar, and waved away the thoughts.  He hadn't been trying to flirt that time though, he had just been complimenting Perchfall...right?

There was no time for that though, and Ashflight cleared his throat.  "Right, let's head out then!"  Leaving camp revealed a landscape painted white, and Ashflight could absolutely say that he was sick of snow.  New-leaf's soft warmth couldn't come fast enough.  As the group headed down to the river, Ashflight made sure to clear a path for the smaller cats with his broad frame until the icy water was in view.  He had made a hole in the ice here the other day, and luckily it was still there.  "Alright, Otterpaw you know the drill.  Snowpaw, come here beside me."  Bending down, Ashflight gazed into the cold murky water, waiting for the telltale ripples of a fish.  "Copy my crouch and the way my paws are positioned.  This is the best way to keep yourself stable while also keeping your paws free to grab the fish."  Before he could go on though, his eyes narrowed as his paw flashed out towards the ice hole, quickly hooking a fish on his claws and dragging it out of the water.  It was a decent-sized trout, and Ashflight killed it with a swift bite to the spine.  "Okay, you give it a try now Snowpaw!"
