Reunion [c]

Oliverain had led her hunting partner to the Moonlit Creek, a place she had learned was more prone to prey. The molly assumed it was the main source of water around here, which made sense to her why it attracts animals. But the creek's usual sparkle was no longer one of moonlight, but now caused by a frosty coating. Will prey not come here anymore then? she worried, padding closer to the ice. It was certainly pretty. But pretty wasn't going to bring kills to her paws.

Having seen her reflection in the frozen water the ragdoll pulled a paw across her face, attempting to wipe off that sleepless expression. She still hadn't gotten her sleep schedule under control, and she could tell it effected her work. I'll sleep after the next patrol. Maybe.

Without further thought she turned to Dawnfeather, asking a simple question, "Where should we look first?" Now she certainly didn't need help finding where to search, but they were hunting together after all. Right? Otherwise it was just another hunting patrol.

Dawnfeather padded slowly after Oliverain, eyes wide in wonder. Unlike the rest of SkyClan, she’d had scant days to appreciate the beauty of leaf-bare… the way the ice clung to branches, snow drifted lightly to the ground, ooh! Especially the way the Moonlit Creek glittered beautifully… she tapped a paw gingerly on the ice. Oooh. Cold.

“Maybe we should call it the Icey Creek now,” she mewed with a smile. Oh. Right. Hunting. That was what they were here for!

“You chose a good spot, Olive, but I don’t like the look of those branches,” she said slowly, looking around at the forest. “The ice turns them all to creakers- whenever even the slightest gust of wind comes up. Maybe deeper in the forest, where the canopy shields the lower branches from the ice, but not here. Anything could snap-“

She cut herself off, tufted ears twitching. Something- under the snow- she dropped seamlessly into a crouch, flicking her tail at her friend. Not far away, a squirrel lifted its head for a moment, looking around, then turned its attention back to where it had hid its acorns in leaf-fall.

The golden molly slunk closer, light colors a warm ghost against the snow… the squirrel froze. She froze, feeling her stomach gently growl. The squirrel decided the acorns weren’t worth its life and fled up a tree faster than even Dawnfeather could follow- and she wouldn’t risk it, not with the snow and ice weakening every bough.

With a slightly sheepish expression, she turned and trotted back to Olive, shrugging. “Maybe we’ll have more luck if we split up- oops, I’m not saying that you accidentally scared it off or something, just that next time one of us fails to catch something, we might scare it towards the other one, instead of up a tree?”

Dawnfeather attempted to catch a squirrel. Success roll 1-5 (+2 Moonlight Creek Bonus). Attempt was unsuccessful, -7 SP

"Sure, that's smart. I'm going to go follow that squirrel. You know where to chase prey. Good luck." And with that Oliverain hurried off, determined to find the squirrel before it got too far. She decided to start at the base of the tree, looking up into it's branches. Nothing, not even leaves. Well it's called leaf-bare for a reason. She didn't want to climb those trees anyways, especially with what Dawnfeather said. Anything could snap. And snap it did.

The she-cat jumped with a hiss, for a branch crashed down just fox-tails away. She twisted around trying to find the danger. Nothing moved, and Oliverain relaxed enough to inspect the large stick. What caused it to fall? she wondered, but soon saw a thick squirrel dart from underneath. The warrior didn't hesitate to give chase. Closer.. closer.. dung.

It made it up a tree safely. Oliverain regained her breath while bitterly watching it escape. Disappointing, but not the only existing prey. The molly could hear birds, she just had to find them.

Oliverain attempted to hunt a squirrel, costing 7 stamina. Unsuccessful.

Dawnfeather nodded. Slipping between tree trunks like a wraith, she eyed the small clearing between herself and the Creek. Where did the animals go when the creek was frozen? Perhaps they ate snow? She settled herself half-into the snow, ignoring the biting chill. A dove- not far- she locked onto it, slowly moving closer.

The dove, scrounging for food in the snow, suddenly lifted its head. Dawnfeather froze, feeling her stomach grumble at the sight of a nice, plump- mmm- the bird suddenly looked straight at her.

Like an unleashed torrent she sprang at it, covering the fox-length between them in a few bounds, springing up into the air, and pinning it down by its tail feathers. A swift bite to the back of the neck, and it was over.

“Maybe WindClan’s onto something,” she mewed to herself, decidedly ignoring the succulent smell of the dove. She wasn’t going to eat it… at least, not until they got back to camp and made sure the elders and kits had been fed.
