Stocking Up [O]

Ashfall quietly lead the hunting patrol out of camp, a thin layer of snow crunching beneath her paws. The winds were sheerer than she had ever felt them, the cold starting to chill her to the bone. Prey was becoming scarcer and scarcer, and she knew that if she wanted the kits and elders fed, that Windclan would have to hunt even more. With the addition of the gorge to their territory, they had a much better chance, but an even better chance was hunting as much as they could now, rather than later.

Quickly looking back at the patrol, she meowed, "Watch out for holes, rabbits might be settling down for the cold weather." With her one eye, she spotted a white rabbit as she spoke, immediately crouching down. Quietly positioning herself into pouncing position, Ashfall wasted no time chasing down the rabbit. A pounce brought paws down on the rabbit, and it was dead. Fur, with a white tint, dangled from her jaw as she began digging. This would be good for the clan, but they needed more. There was always more to do.

With leaf-bare in the way, Dreampaw insisted that they wanted to come along. Helping the clan out most ways possible would be nice, seeing how scarce the prey could get with such chillingly cold weather. As Ashfall spoke up, they nodded, quickly scanning around the tunnels a sight of prey. The deputy seemed to have already caught sight of one, and they turned around, looking for some more to come.

They made sure that their paw steps wouldn’t be heard so easily underneath the thin layer of snow, and quickly pin-pointed another sight of a rabbit. They stealthily crouched down, then within just a blink of an eye— darted towards the prey with unsheathed claws. They launched themselves to it, though acidentally creating more sound than they've expected— and only caught fur in their mouth in the end. Disappointingly, they frowned, continuing to search for more to come.

Magpiepaw was yet to go out on any training, but she assumed that was just because Spotlake was such an important warrior within the clan, and was needed elsewhere. That was the only downfall of having a really respected senior warrior as a mentor, she guessed, and so instead she was joining other patrols, each one desperate to stock up on prey before the rest of the cold weather hit. She had never known anything other than leaf-fall or leaf-bare, but looking back, even her days as a kit seemed miles warmer than today.

She was picking up what she could, having learnt some things from the other apprentices here and there. Not quite enough to properly hunt, but for now she could learn. And her eyes were sharp, but currently focused on the wrong thing. It was one of her first times out of camp, and she was set on finding something, anything, of interest.

However, she had to try to hide her disappointment when they traveled into the tunnels, somewhere where she couldn't just pretend to hunt. Instead, her ears pricked, trying her best to watch the other cats in her patrol and what they did. Dreampaw, if she remembered their name correctly, was one of her new denmates and missed their rabbit just barely, but drove it towards Magpiepaw enough for her to have a go as well. Turned out, it was easy to catch prey driven directly towards you. Without a second thought, Magpiepaw leapt on it, just like the bug chasing she'd done with Goosepaw. Her claws dug into its pelt, and she bit its neck, remembering the throat wounds most prey on the fresh-kill pile carried. "I did it!" She said in sheer surprise, "I actually did it!" If hunting was always this easy, why did she need a mentor in the first place?
