Mistlebright was still lost as to what to do when it came to training Dappledpaw. In many ways, she'd expected to have to teach her first apprentice all the basics, but now she had an apprentice who was barely younger than her, and had already done some training. This was the same thing Frostgaze had had to do, and so she decided resolutely while she was waiting for the spotted tabby, that that's what she would do to. What her old mentor would do. Just with a bit more her to it.

"The sun sets Dappledpaw, are you ready to go?" She greeted. Unfortunately, the sunset itself carried no brilliant colours, only a pale, glowing orange, which was rapidly fading. The nights grew longer, bad for every clan except Shadowclan. The cold and frost was still an issue, however. As the pair set off, Mistlebright inquired, "How much do you already know, and what would you like to work on? With solid roots, we can build a strong tree." Hopegiver had been missing a while, but the warrior was unsure of how much training they had done before that.

Dappledpaw trotted out of the apprentice’s den to meet Mistlebright. She hadn’t expected for her to be made her mentor, as they had been apprentices together. She greeted Mistlebright with a nod and set off. Hearing her new mentor’s question, she thought back to the training she had had. The moon leading up to Hopegiver’s disappearance, she had been distant and didn’t take her out to train, so hadn’t been able to learn as much as other apprentices. Dappledpaw had learned the basics before that, though, so she could at least go on patrols. “Hopegiver taught me hunter’s crouch and how to pounce, but not much else. She taught me a few battle moves, too, but I’d like to work on them,” she responded. Dappledpaw had picked up a few things through observation on the many patrols she had been on, but nothing super significant.

Mistlebright nodded, turning over her apprentice's words in her head. "Ok, I have a plan." She was mostly talking to herself, sorting out what she would do, "By what you say, I think your hunting will be fine. After all, the crouch and then pounce are all you need, the rest comes with practice. If you catch one or two pieces of prey, I can watch your technique, check everything is as should be." Remembering that Dappledpaw had wanted to work on her fighting, she added, "Then we shall move on to sparring, and you can show me what you already know." Luckily, the spotted apprentice seemed to mostly know what she was doing, and probably wouldn't need much instruction from Mistlebright, just a few tips here and there where the warrior could offer them.

Dappledpaw listened to Mistlebright explain their plan for training and gave a quick nod to show her that she understood. Dappledpaw stalked through the marsh and looked around for anything to hunt. A flicker of movement in the dim light caught her eye and she instantly dropped into a crouch. She crept through the grass and spotted the prey she was tracking. It was a lizard, and it was approaching a clearing in the marsh She waited at the edge of the clearing until it had stopped moving, and she surged forward in a pounce. Dappledpaw felt one of her paws slip in a puddle, and she fell to the ground. The sound and sight of her falling alerted the lizard. It quickly skittered away, and she let out a frustrated sigh.
