A Hunt for Two [c]

Soon as the dusk began to fade, an apprentice made his way through the thorn-colored tunnel, and to the outside where the marshes suffuse. With his ears pricked, eyes sharp, and nose kept sharply keen, Duskpaw decided it would be good time to head out hunting. He hadn't been assigned to this, though the apprentice enjoyed having hunting sessions to bring back to his clan. Each member of ShadowClan needed prey for their own, and he knew so did he. And so, with determination, he padded to his usual hunting spot. It was the spot where Ratpaw have found him in before, and they managed to have a nice conversation to themselves. Maybe it would be the same this time, even though he was more convinced— he'd have this hunting session alone.

Not shortly after he had arrived, the tom have heard a croaking sound. Instantly, he crouched down, his gaze not once leaving the frog behind. It hid itself under shallow mud, searching for something. Then carefully using the shadows to his advantage, he disguised himself behind a thick bush, being cautious to not make a sound. Slowly, his pawsteps approached the critter— and he made a final leap. With a fairly loud splash, the tom blinked, feeling confused. His fangs have only bitten through air, and he was empty-pawed. This.. This had been his first fail ever since he began hunting.

Duskpaw shook his head, planning to search around for more prey to catch. When suddenly— sounds of pawsteps rustled through the grass, telling him that there were a cat behind him. Alerted, the apprentice turned around.

Mistlebright was still getting used to the new warrior's den, since it was her first day in it after her vigil. However, she'd found that it wasn't as different as she'd expected on the whole. After all, her flowers may've blossomed, but she was the same roots and stem and leaves as she always had been. It was nice for her to think about it that way, constantly growing but leaving some parts the same, only making them stronger and more noticeable. Carefully, she padded out of the warrior's den, even though night had barely set in. A light sleeper, made even more so by her new nest. Just as she left, she spotted a large grey form exit the camp. It wasn't a pelt she recognised, but since she was up early, she might as well make herself useful. Hunting could sometimes be more successful alone, but after the amount of predators she'd run into, it probably wasn't always best to patrol solo.

The cat she followed didn't go far, and the warrior caught up soon enough, in time to watch the grey cat loose his catch. As he turned around, Mistlebright realised that he was not a warrior, as she'd expected, but one of the apprentices, Duskpaw. She didn't know him well, but they had shared a den for a brief while. "Sorry about your prey, but I don't think it was my rustle that alerted it - Frostgaze says I move quietly. Do you mind if I hunt with you?" She would've waited for an answer, but she heard the quiet scuffing of a mouse or something small like that, and quickly pinpointed the scent and began to stalk it.

She pounced as soon as she decided she was close enough, and the little rodent was trapped by her paws. Feeling a little bad that she'd caught something when her companion hadn't yet, she mewed, "You can have it, it you want. It tastes nicer than frog anyways."

As quick as the cat approached, so did the rodent neatly got caught in her jaws. Duskpaw blinked, processing what just had happened— then gave her a greeting nod. He have heard of her before, though had never properly got to chat with the warrior. She seemed nice, though. "Thanks," Duskpaw smiled in a somewhat sheepish manner, "I'm Duskpaw, what about you?" He asked. Then remembering the question she also have just asked earlier, the tom shook his head. "No, I don't mind! Having another cat to hunt with is nice." He beamed. Then wanting to thank her for the rodent, he spun around, scanning the area for any more signs of prey. It would probably take another while before he could attempt to catch one again, considering how painfully obvious the splash from earlier just seemed to sound.

Briefly giving his head a shake away from his thoughts, Duskpaw raised his head, sniffing the area for prey. Once he made sure he located another rodent's scent from not too far off, he flicked his tail, and made his way torwards it. He stalked the trail of scent, right to where the rustling noise came from, and waited for the right moment. With a quick leap— the apprentice dived forward, aiming for the scent that he had followed all along. As soon as he felt the familiar warmth of prey in his mouth, his jaws snapped shut, and he finished it off without a sound. The apprentice held up his catch, and once again padded back to where the other warrior was standing. He'd then gently place it down in front of her paws. "Here— for the rodent you just gave me a short while ago. I thought I'd repay." Duskpaw grinned.

"Mistlebright. After my cousin." The warrior mewed. The second half was something she added on frequently, proud that her name had basis in not only the present, but the past as well. It made her feel like Brighteye was fulfilling her promise in watching out for her. She smiled softly back at the tom's reply, before continuing to hunt at the same time as Duskpaw.

She caught scent of a lizard, which she didn't particularly dislike, and were much better than frogs. Regardless of what she caught, there would be someone in the clan who would happily eat whatever prey. She crept towards the scaly creature, ears and eyes sharp. The tiniest mistake would alert the already skittish prey, and she was careful to make sure she was in the correct place so it wouldn't scent her either. With one quick leap, she sprung forwards, her teeth snapping around the lizard's tail. However, this technique didn't work with this prey, and instead she was left with just the tail, which she quickly spat out in disgust, as her lost catch scuttled away, seeming surprisingly fine.

Her mood was definitely improved at Duskpaw's gift, and she smiled softly, mumbling a thank-you. "I guess I'll need that. I wonder why we don't drop our tails like they do."

Mistlebright.. That sounded like a cool name. He didn't quite get it, but that didn't mind him, either. It simply sounded like a pretty name. Though as soon as the molly lunged forward, Duskpaw frowned at the unexpected fail. She was so close— and yet, the lizard managed to escape! He then nodded at her thank, and continued to listen to her as her voice spoke up. "I'm glad that our tails don't," He snickered, "Otherwise if it does.. I don't think that'd be very good." The tom gave a shrug. Maybe lizards drop their tails to protect themselves? He wasn't so sure, and kept it to himself anyway.

Then, he caught a familiar scent of a rodent. They were easier to catch than other prey he'd encountered before, and soon dropped down to a decent hunting crouch. With his fur perfectly blending into the night sky, he crept up to the creature, and soon made his pounce. The warmth coming from the freshly-killed prey made him purr, and he set it down; hastily burrowing the mouse underneath the ground for later.

Mistlebright smiled when Duskflight replied, not really expecting one. She had been more speaking to herself, a habit that she picked up instead of getting frustrated, but she welcomed his addition. Their hunt continued, and she scented the slightly cold night air once again. She tracked the scent of mouse, ears pricked for any whisper of movement that would give her a clearly location. In the end, that wasn't necessary, as the little animal, completely oblivious to the cat tracing it, run across her path.

Despite being caught off-guard, the warrior managed to pounce in time, this prey having no unusual quality that allowed it to escape. She killed it quickly still, not wanting to take her chances and lose another piece of prey.
