The Wind on our Backs (c)

Brookthistle yawned, stretching, as she stepped over the sleeping bodies of her Clanmates. So much had happened... So much loss. Softbreeze, Sunnyskip, Ryesnap, Sunpaw, Shyfawn.. WindClan's morality was at an all time low. Not even happy-go-lucky Silverlight had his usual "Silverlight Spark" nowadays. Maybe.. Maybe she could do something to fix that, for once. "Hey, Silverlight!" She called, padding up to the silver tom, tail waving high in the air. "Let's go hunting, yeah? I'm sure Sagewillow will be grateful for the prey!"

That was the one good thing going on right now. Downtuft's mate, Sagewillow, was pregnant. Which meant new life for WindClan, new hope. And for Brookthistle... It meant that Downtuft - her former mentor - would be a dad. The thought alone made the she-cat want to cackle, and she wondered how well the older tom would do if any of them were like her when she was younger. I can't wait to see that!

Waving her tail for Silverlight to follow, she padded out of camp, onto the beautiful moors of WindClan. Spotting a magpie, Brookthistle crept forward slowly, and attempted to leap for it as it attempted to fly away. Her claw snagged it's tail feathers, just barely. Hissing with frustration, Brookthistle tried to pry it from the sky, but with an angry chirp, the bird escaped her claws, leaving her with just a pawful of feathers.

With Shyfawn's recent passing, it almost seemed like WindClan as a whole was going into a downward spiral of grief and loss. They had buried more cats in such a short period of time that Silver was starting to believe they were being cursed. Many of those that had passed were of his own kin and that hurt even more. Life was certainly playing cruel tricks on him and he was begging it to stop. He wasn't sure how much longer he can take the hurt without crumbling into dust.

The only bit of silver lining he was clinging to was Sagewillow's pregnancy and the promise of new life for the clan. This was what they desperately needed after moons of misery and grievances. The whole clan was thrilled for the upcoming litter and the tom could say that he certainly was too. He needed the distraction and then some.

At the sound of someone calling his name, he snapped out of his thoughts and looked over at the source. To his surprise, Brookthistle was the one addressing him. He hadn't interacted much with the she-cat but he knew her to be fiercely loyal to the clan and a dependable young warrior. It's why with no hesitation he walked over to her, curious as to what she wanted him for. At the she-cat's words, the tom's ears perked up a tad and a fond twinkle overtook his gaze. What a thoughtful and great idea! "Hunting for Sagewillow? I'll absolutely go with ya! She'll need all the food to keep herself and the kits healthy and I'm also sure she'll be grateful... I can't wait for them to finally arrive. It'll finally be the sunny day we've been waiting for..." the older cat trailed on with a rare bout of enthusiasm and wistfulness as he followed Brook out of the camp at her beckon, eagerness renewed with the prospect that he'd be helping provide for the future of the clan. He could tell that Brook was also looking forward to the kits to come.

As soon as they walked out into the heart of the territory, the silver-furred tom split from his hunting companion and began his search for any nearby prey. It didn't take long for him to spot a quail. He smiled to himself and slowly began to creep towards it. The moment he reached a safe enough distance, he paused for a moment just to be sure it hadn't heard him, then pounced.

Thank StarClan he was able to catch it. The moment his claws had sunk into the bird's body, he wasted no time in killing it in a bite. Now, he had one good catch for Sage to enjoy. The tom looked over at his denmate and offered her an encouraging grin, much like the ones he used to give before... before everything happened. No worries if they missed a catch. They can still keep on trying.

Brookthistle was relieved when Silverlight flashed her a smile, reminiscent of ones he'd give before all their losses. Grateful she was helping to bring back the tom's lost spark, the magpie didn't seem bother her half as much. We're WindClan. One bird won't bring us down!

Confidence renewed, she turned finding a hare. She'd catch that critter for sure! Making sure that no pesky little burrows or tunnels were around, Brookthistle sprinted towards the hare, with all the speed of a WindClan warrior. Caught off guard, the hare turned to fight, knowing it wouldn't be able to flee, but Brookthistle's height and weight were no match for the hare as she swiftly killed it.

Carrying her catch back towards Silverlight, she dropped the carcass beside his quail, a purr in her throat. "So, Silverlight, Down's finally settled down - what about you? Any felines catch your eye?" Brookthistle mewed, a mischievous look in her eyes.

After giving Brook some encouragement, he was on his way to a rabbit he'd spotted moments earlier, the tom glanced back every so often as he watched Brook effortlessly catch a hare. That was great! See? A missed catch was fine if you can recover well after. He shot her a toothy grin before finally turning his full attention back at the prey in his sights. The wind was blowing in his favor and there was nowhere for it to hide in. It would be a perfect catch... if he hadn't made the mistake of listening in on what Brook was asking him. He stopped completely and whipped his head around, spluttering out a 'what?' as he felt his face instantly heat up. Now where was that coming from?

When the tom peeked back at the rabbit, he was met with the creature's eyes staring right into his own. They both seemed to be frozen in place. Mousedung! The silver-furred tom regained his composure and quickly leaped at it, praying to the stars above that he'd be able to catch this.

His skills and quick reflexes saved the day as he barely managed to kill the critter. The warrior breathed in then out through his nose. StarClan give him strength...

Now that that was over, it was time to address the source of his near mishap... Silver walked up to the molly, rabbit hanging from his jaws, and he unceremoniously dropped it to the ground atop of his first catch and raised a brow at her. After a few moments of staring, the tom, to his utter embarrassment, squeaked out a, "Why?" The heat was once again returning to his face. At this point, he didn't need any fur to keep warm. Brook was doing just fine of causing him to melt from confusion and awkwardness.
