Clouded Skies [Open Hunting]

Dawnpaw moved stealthily through the trees, weaving back and forth like a spider on her web. Although she barely knew these trees, there was a sturdy certainty to them, something that made her feel wanted. Something that said they were waiting for her, waiting for somecat to climb them and wonder at the sunrise. Waiting for somecat to get to know them, know their whimsy and the way they bent in the breeze, somecat to know how to weave through their branches.

Dawnpaw sprung off her branch, sinking her claws into the limb just above her head. She pulled herself up and took off, racing through the trees, the wind in her fur. This, this was what SkyClan meant, to trace a path in the sky. She was mid-leap when she remembered she was on a hunting patrol. Landing rather ungracefully on a branch rather lower than the one she’d been aiming for, she scented the air. This was one of her first hunting patrols since returning. She was trying to get to know the territory and her Clanmates- she knew the old rogue camp and Hawkuncle better than she knew them. Maybe if she caught some prey, she could talk to the rest of her patrol about it, start up a conversation.

The rustle of feathers just above her head made her freeze. Slowly, ever so slowly, she turned her head and spied a dove. In a sudden flurry of motion, she lunged for it, claws sinking into its wings. The dove gave a loud call, a swan’s song, if you will, before Dawnpaw’s claws swiftly ended its life. The apprentice fell lightly onto the ground, landing on her paws- she hadn’t been very high. She picked up her prey and headed back to bury it, pleased with herself. Hopefully the rest of her patrol would also be pleased.

Dawnpaw attempted to catch a dove. She was successful.
