Subject: A Basil's Place [Closed] Mon 9 Aug 2021 - 19:34
For the last few nights, Flintstar had been stuck with a strange...Problem. He wasn't sure when it had started - why it had started, but during a nightly patrol of the camp, as he past the medicine cat's den...A memory flooded into his mind, causing him to halt with a frown. It seemed to crisp, so fresh, but it had been countless moons ago - before he had even became deputy... Of meeting a friendly SkyClan she-cat named Basildrop. His ears twitched, shifting uncertainly on his paws as he pushed onward, trying to ignore the sudden intrusive thought. But every night, as he stepped past Rookfire's den, another memory would draw him in - not the same other than for a single key feature...Basildrop. All of the sudden memories he couldn't forget were of his first friend.
He sat outside of his den, replaying the last few nights in his head, eyes drifting once more towards the medicine cat's den - and how the memories of Basildrop would not leave him alone. He huffed, raising a paw to rub across his head as if it would help, tail twitching in annoyance. Why, why couldn't he escape these memories? Basildrop had been dead for moons. He hadn't even remained close with her son, there was no reason for him to think of her, not when he had other things on his mind. The rogues that clawed at his territory was one, not to mention what to do with Murkystrike's daughter...
At that, he suddenly paused. Basilkit. The young she-cat was a energetic sort but was unfit to be a warrior - it was clear that she wasn't the strongest and to be an apprentice could very much be a death sentence and while the leader accepted how cold the world was...He could not knowingly send a young kit to her early death, so he and Murkystrike had tried to come up with a new plan, find a new place within the camp for her. His eyes fell on the source of his returning memories, before he finally pushed himself to his paws and started to look around the camp for his deputy. "Murkystrike!" he meowed as he spotted her, padding quickly across the camp to greet her. "May I have a moment? Its about what to do with Basilkit."

Murkystrike's ears turned before her head did as she heard Flintstar call for her. She got to her paws and turned, meeting him as he approached. As she opened her mouth to ask what was on his mind, he answered the question she hadn't asked yet, and she blinked twice before nodding. Her mouth felt suddenly dry, and the words she wanted to speak refused to come out, catching in her throat. Instead, she simply nodded, swallowing a few times before she found she could speak again. Surely he had figured out a good alternative, otherwise he wouldn't be here to speak with her about it... Right?

Mistyfalcon had been stretched out next to Murkystrike, eyes half-closed as a quiet purr rumbled in his chest. He lifted his head as she got up, blicking, then stood and stretched as she made her way toward Flintstar. He could almost feel her anxiety, and if Flintstar hadn't mentioned it that it had to be about Basilkit. Mistyfalcon padded over, gently brushing his tail across Murkystrike's back as he gazed up at Flintstar.
"What are you thinking?" Basilkit was... frustrated... with not being made an apprentice at the same time as her brothers, and Mistyfalcon wished more than anything that they could do something more for her. There had to be something they could do that was relatively safer for her than rigorous warrior training.

Flintstar blinked as Murkystrike could only manage a nod, before glancing at Mistyfalcon as the tom stood up to stand beside his mate. "Well..." He spared a glance behind him, at the medicine cat's den as once again he found his mind suddenly dwelling on memories long past before he gave his head a shake and turned to the two parents. "I believe StarClan wishes for her to be a medicine cat," he meowed, sitting down as he glanced between the two. "I hadn't thought much of it before as I am not sure if Rookfire desires an apprentice but in the last few sunrises, whenever I crossed near the medicine cat's den or looked at it..." he fell silent, looking down at his paws as emotion flickered across his face for a heartbeat. "...My mind drifts to an...Old friend - Basildrop of SkyClan. She died many moons back but the fact that I am thinking of her while we work towards finding a place for Basilkit... My mind hasn't thought of her in moons. So...I do believe its from StarClan. But, you both know Basilkit better than I could - what do you think of this path for her?"

Mistyfalcon joined her, and Murkystrike relaxed into his touch slightly, taking a deep breath as Flintstar continued with a glance to the medicine den. Her mind pieced together his words into an idea of what he was going for, and a small sparkle returned to her eyes as she thought of it. Basilpaw, a medicine cat? She recalled how their daughter had been when they had the second litter, and how carefully she looked after her siblings. Her breathing became easier, a huge weight seeming to lift off of her shoulders as she thought about it more to herself before nodding along as Flintstar finished. "I can not say for sure if this is the path for her, she would have to decide that for herself... But I will say that I do think it is definitely an option, and a good one at that. Should she choose to accept, as well as Rookfire, I believe that she would excel as a medicine cat." She mewed, a small smile forming on her face as she looked between the nursery and the medicine den, picturing her daughter sorting herbs and preparing poultices as she had seen Rookfire do.

Flintstar spoke, and Mistyfalcon nearly rolled his eyes at the mention of Skyclan and the idea of Starclan using that as a message, though his expression remained neutral. He wasn't exactly religious, and as far as he was concerned the dead needed to stay that way, and had no business interfering in the affairs of the living. Still, the idea of Basilkit becoming a medicine cat... It wasn't a bad one at all. It was certainly better than anything he or Murkystrike had come up with, and that was what mattered here.
"It's Basilkit and Rookfire's choice." Mistyfalcon agreed, "I think she'd do well, if she chose that. She's always shown concern for the wellbeing of others, and it's less physically demanding, too." It might just be something that Basilkit would excel at, at least Mistyfalcon hoped so.

Flintstar gave a nod as they both stressed that it would be up to Basilkit and Rookfire to accept this, having expected nothing less. "Of course, this choice will be fully up to the two of them. I will not force your daughter into a path she doesn't like..." There was a pause at that, a painful memory flickering in his head. Of how hard Mothglow had tried to make his daughter a medicine cat - a postilion that Cinderpaw had refused up until Mothglow had died but even then, Cinderpaw had disappeared not long after... A sigh escaped him, giving his head a shake as he glanced between the two. "If she doesn't want the path, then we will find a place for her elsewhere. I also don't suspect that Rookfire will deny - an apprentice would do him good and relieve the burden on his shoulders. I will speak to Rookfire tonight and if he agrees, we can approach Basilkit tomorrow," he meowed before he glanced between the two parents. "...Is there anything else that you two wish to add or are we all content with this course of action?"
