A Rough First Day [Rookfire]

Ravenpaw walked into ShadowClan's camp and straight to the medicine den. She had hoped to not to have made a trip to the medicine cat this soon, but it had been a rough first day of training. She approached the medicine den and peeked inside. She made her way in, and sat down near the entrance. She didn't want to disturb his sleep, so she called out quietly, "Rookfire?" She sat and waited for him, and bent to lick her dried blood off of her shoulder, gagging slightly and instead looked around the medicine den.

Rookfire turned at the mention of his name, spotting Ravenpaw. "Yeah? Do you need something?" His question seemed to be answered by the apprentice licking a wound on her shoulder. "Oh stars, are you okay?" he asked. The black tuxedo rushed to the wound, grabbing cobwebs to help patch it up and horsetail to prevent infection. Binding the wound cleanly, he decided to talk with Ravenpaw. "How did you get hurt like this?" he asked.

Ravenpaw watched as Rookfire gathered the cobweb and whatever else he had grabbed. She shook her head slowly, her tail sweeping the ground. "An owl. It ran into Moonshine.... literally. Well, I guess it flew into her." She looked up at Rookfire after a moment. "First day of training too."

Rookfire nodded at Ravenpaw's response. It did make sense... Perhaps the medicine cat just didn't expect an apprentice to get hurt like that so soon. Hence, the overreaction. "Okay, it's honestly not as bad as I thought it was." He chewed the horsetail into a poultice, placing it on the apprentice's wounds. "Now just hold still... It's gonna sting a little, but it makes sure that the wound won't get infected." After making sure that the poultice was held up by catchweed, the black tuxedo tom placed cobwebs on the wound. "So, besides that, how did training go?" he asked, trying to create some small talk with the apprentice.

Ravenpaw watched as the medicine cat worked, curious about what he was using, and what. She inhaled a bit sharply as he applied the poultice, but made no other noise or movement until he was done. "It seemed worse to me too." She tried to reassure the tom, but then again, he was a medicine cat, he had seen worse. At his question about her training, Ravenpaw perked up. "I caught my first prey today! So besides the owl, it went pretty well, I would say." She looked around the den a bit more. "So... what exactly are all these herbs?"

Rookfire blinked at Ravenpaw's question about the herbs in his den. He really didn't talk about them all very often, just because there were so many different herbs to talk about. "Over there on the far left side of the den are the herbs used for healing wounds. Horsetail is the spiky green one, it's what I put on your shoulder to prevent infection. Cobwebs are used to bind wounds, and poppy seeds are used to soothe pain or put someone to sleep, if it's needed."

"On the far right side of the den are herbs needed for kitting or raising kits. The sticks, chervil, and raspberry leaves are there for kitting, while borage and parsley are there to control how much milk the queens make." The black tuxedo then pointed to the herbs right behind Ravenpaw. "The herbs closest to you are mainly used for varied uses. That's where our traveling herbs are, as well as the herbs used for treating bee stings and thorns." The black tuxedo was glad to tell any curious cat how the herbs are organized, since it was something that he liked talking about.

After binding the cobwebs to the apprentice's shoulder, the black tuxedo grinned. "That should keep the wound closed," he said. "You should be good to go hunt and fight now, though I wouldn't recommend it." What he really meant by that was if she really wanted to go and hunt again, the black tuxedo couldn't stop her, but it may not be the best for her body. "Whether you choose to be active today or not, please get a lot of sleep tonight. It will help you heal faster."

Ravenpaw listened carefully as Rookfire talked about the herbs. There was still a lot to learn about clan life, and she knew that Medicine Cats were one of the most important cats in the clan. Ravenpaw nodded as Rookfire finished speaking. "I don't plan on doing anything else today, I had enough with that Owl." She looked around at the herbs Rookfire had mentioned. "What happens if a clan looses their Medicine Cat?" She didn't mean to sound rude, but the she-cat was curious. There seemed to be a lot of herbs for a cat to know, and no one seemed to know as much as Rookfire about them.

Rookfire blinked. He didn't really mind Ravenpaw's company if she wanted to stay. It was kinda lonely being in the medicine den anyways, and it better talking to other cats. "Well, if they had an apprentice, their apprentice would take over, but if it was their only medicine cat, well... I guess a new cat would be chosen by one of the other medicine cats to be trained." He assumed that the training would be similar to Iniko's training of Rookfire when the young medicine cat was just a kit. "That's how I became ShadowClan's medicine cat, effectively. I'm still looking for a medicine cat apprentice, but I haven't found one just yet."

Ravenpaw nodded as Rookfire finished speaking. She didn't realize that he was looking for an apprentice. "How do you choose who becomes your apprentice?" Ravenpaw was happy on her path to the warrior, but there were a few other apprentices. She was surprised that Rookfire hadn't chosen one yet, but then again, it seemed to take a certain kind of cat to fill this role, given they couldn't have kits or a mate.
