On the Prowl [Tuftwing]

A small ginger tom bounded out of the apprentice's den. It was morning, and Tuftwing promised him he was going to hunt today. Copper eyes lit up, the size of saucers, the excitement radiating like heat in greenleaf.

Cherrypaw sniffed out the warrior's den and found his mentor, sleeping. "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING! We're gonna hunt today! Right? RIGHT?! You promised! Let's go!"

The apprentice chirped as he rubbed his head against her, nudging her awake. "Good morning, best mentor in the whole world! Hey! Morning! It's gonna be a great day!"

The tom purred constantly and trilled as he trotted along the outside of the warrior's den. "Morning, Tuftwing! You're the best. The sun's out and it's a beautiful day."

Being a mentor was far, far harder than Tuftwing could have expected. Was it the fact that the kit she'd accidentally befriended was just as energetic in apprentice form? Was it that she was barely a warrior? Who knew. Possibly StarClan, but as she learned, their ancestors only knew so much. Was Cherrypaw an enigma to them, too?

A shout directly in her ear caused her to startle awake. Tuftwing was not ready for such an early morning, though, and she rolled over to the other side, groaning deeply like a wounded badger.

With the nudging, she realized there was no hope of possibly catching more sleep, so she stood like a great mountain of fur. "You're certainly enthusiastic today," she said with great exhaustion. Watching him move so much, she wondered if he ever got tired. "That probably means it's a good day to hunt. There's a lot more prey running now that it's Newleaf. Let's head out a little bit and we'll see what we scent, yes?"

“Great, you’re up!” Cherrypaw sing-songed, his dark ginger fur clinging to his short body.

He puffed himself out, looking like a rather disgruntled pompom instead of the fierce wildcat he was channeling. “Let’s take it on! Yay, newleaf!”

The kit-sized apprentice waddled towards the edge of camp, calling for Tuftwing every three foxlengths. “C’mon, c’mon! I’m so excited!”

The trees towered over him, the branches seeming all too far away from him. But he was a SkyClan cat! He had the jumping skills of all of LeopardClan. He could do this!

“Cool! What do we do now?!”

Tuftwing couldn't possibly stay mad when Cherrypaw looked so happy to get to training. Perhaps she was the luckiest mentor in SkyClan if she had such a willing apprentice. StarClan knew she hadn't made her mentor's life easy during their time together.

"Yes," she mrrowed, "there's a whole forest waiting for the might of SkyClan's best apprentice and mentor!"

Unlike the impatient being she was stuck with, she padded after Cherrypaw with a slow stride. It was better to save their energy for hunting. Every time she was called for, she just assured him they'd get there in due time.

Once they were in the forest proper, she let the breeze ruffle her fur for a bit, then turned to Cherrypaw. "Part your jaws and look for prey. If I find something close by, I'll show you the proper way to get it. Stalking on the ground is much different than stalking in the branches."

Then, she attempted to scent for something that would give a good display of SkyClan's specialty-- a squirrel. As she caught scent of the long-tailed rodent, she dug her claws into the tree's bark and began to haul herself into a low-laying branch. From there, she saw the squirrel a few branches over and quietly made her way closer. Tuftwing went slowly and stealthily until she was practically right on top of it, then pounced with no fear of falling. The squirrel was then trapped between her jaws and killed. It was held tightly as she made her way to the base of the tree, leaping down to rejoin Cherrypaw.

Dropping it and scraping some dirt over, she said, "One day, that will be second nature to you."

“Great StarClan!”

He sat staring, amazed. “You’re the best warrior ever!”

The kit-sized tom sprang to his paws, opening his mouth. There were so many flavors to the air, so many different textures. They were frankly overwhelming, and the tom felt the forest breathe around him. Feathers fluttering, the small scrapes of little claws and little paws...

“Is the forest always like this?” Cherrypaw asked quietly, eyes the size of a full moon.

It was his time. His time to hunt.

The tom crept to the ground, slowly slinking up the tree as to not draw too much attention. He stood on a branch, eyeing a robin at the end of it. Cherrypaw grabbed the branch above his head and lined himself up. If he lined it up right, he would have a bird.

The tom sprang, claws out.

And... he missed.

Cherrypaw slid off to the side and howled, “MOOOOOOUSE-DUUUUUUNG!”

Tuftwing seemed to get shy when Cherrypaw praised her. "I've just got some experience, is all."

In her bashfulness, she stepped aside to let Cherrypaw attempt to taste the air. This was all undoubtedly new for him. StarClan knew that, when she was a new apprentice, she had trouble telling a mouse from a squirrel and a bird's fluttering from the rustling leaves. But Cherrypaw was smart. Or, at the very least, determined.

Tuftwing gave a soft nod. "In Newleaf? Yes. But as the leaves grow and disappear, the sounds change. Sometimes, it's so quiet, you swear you can hear WindClan."

Then her eyes trained on Cherrypaw attempting to scale the tree. She kept close by, so as to not let him drop completely without another cat to break his fall. Of course, he seemed to be a natural at that part. The only problem was when his leap came short of the bird he was after. Tuftwing winced.

The screech that Cherrypaw let out was far from graceful. As he slid off, he fell onto Tuftwing. Thankfully, they were close enough to the ground that there was no great danger. Only, Tuftwing found herself scrambling to her feet at the sight of something dangerous. A snake!

"Cherrypaw, get back! There's a snake!"
