Not Another Hunting Trip!

It felt like every day was tense ever since the Asylum fiasco had been said and done. Memories flashed back to the initial raid on camp, making her feel awful, helpless, and angry. When she felt like this, she tended to want to do something to feel less miserable. After all, if she could prove herself worthy of her warrior name, she'd finally be something. Someone.

Which meant she had to find some cats to patrol with. Strutting up to Birdpaw, she said, "Hey, you... thinking about going hunting? I mean, it's better than sifting for ticks and fleas on the elders."

Birdpaw was sitting outside the apprentice den, gazing forlornly at the camp entrance. She was bored but had finished her duties earlier in the day, but Ravenclaw didn't seem to be around. She couldn't leave camp to go hunting on her own, and while it irritated her, she wasn't going to disobey that order. With her luck it would lead to another lecture.

When another apprentice approached her, Birdpaw practically jumped for joy. She hadn't interacted with Tuftpaw much, if at all, really, so she might've been a bit more hesitant but she was bored. Hunting was a good cure for boredom, and the prospect of getting out of camp was exciting.

"Sure," Birdpaw mewed, "Being stuck in camp is boring." And hunting was definitely better than searching the elders for ticks. Especially when that meant needing to ask the medicine cat for mouse bile. There were times Birdpaw thought she'd never get the stench out of her nose when she was on elder duty.

Tuftpaw knew she wasn't the most social of cats, which made her awkward when talking to her Clanmates. All she knew was she wanted to do her best for her Clan, but what they wanted her to do was often dull or far from desirable. In any case, she hoped that Birdpaw would be willing to go on a hunting patrol with her. It didn't even matter if they caught anything or not.

She looked relieved when Birdpaw agreed to the little excursion. Sure, they were both apprentices, but no one could complain if they brought back something to eat. Or, at the very least, came back somewhat more experienced than before they left.

"Awesome. Is there anyone else that needs to come? Otherwise, I think we just head for Moonlit Creek and see what's running today. With it getting warmer, we should find something," Tuftpaw mewed, preparing to take the exit out of camp. They could be quite efficient with two paws if they tried, given there'd be less cat-scent alerting prey.

"We're bound to find something, let's go." Birdpaw chirped. She was thoroughly sick of being in camp, hunting would be just the thing to cure her boredom.

Birdpaw followed the older apprentice out of camp, and it wasn't long before she could hear the faint sound of the creek not far off. Birdpaw lifted her head, jaws parted slightly as she scanned the trees around the pair, and spotted a sparrow perched on a low branch a short distance away.

Carefully, she made her way towards the bird, careful claws digging into the bark of the tree as she made her way from one branch to another. Once the bird was close enough, Birdpaw leapt. Her paws met feathers, and she quickly cut off the bird's cry of alarm, lightly jump back to the forest floor with it dangling from her jaws. She placed it beneath the root of the tree, kicking some dirt over it to mark the spot for later before glancing back at where she'd last seen Tuftpaw.

Tuftpaw nodded and walked through the entrance. Already, the forest was warmer than it had been for some time. She looked over her shoulder at Birdpaw, "How hot do you think Greenleaf will be?"

As they moved through the forest to their destination, the soft breeze rustled Tuftpaw's thick coat. She was partly worried about the coming hot season, given her pelt, but it was just another challenge to brave. Tasting the air, she could pick up some scents of prey mingling with the plants. On the forest floor, she could see a squirrel scrabbling away at the dirt.

Dropping into a crouch, Tuftpaw moved quietly across the bottom of the forest. Her tail was in prime position to go, as were her hindquarters. When she began to get closer, the squirrel perked its head up briefly. However, before it could squeak and run up the tree, Tuftpaw was already leaping at it for the kill. One bite to the throat, and the morsel was done for. She found a secluded side of the tree the squirrel had almost escaped to, burying it lightly. Then she went to meet up with Birdpaw. "I've got a squirrel. And you?"

"I caught a bird." She mewed as Tuftpaw trotted back towards her. They'd both caught something, which was good.

"I've heard some of the older warriors say that last greenleaf was really terrible. I hope it's not that bad, having long fur must have been miserable." Birdpaw shrugged. She hadn't been alive for it, but the stories of how hot it had been seemed bad enough. Her own fur was long, just as her grandmother's was.

She was about to say something else when a loud honk! made her jump. And from out between some trees came an angry goose. Sharp beak snapped at her head, and Birdpaw instinctively ducked, jumping aside and flashing out a paw to strike at the goose defensively. Her claws met only empty air as the goose moved.

"Tuftpaw, a little help?" Well this was embarrassing. Hadn't she been told not to get into trouble?

Goose used Beaked Thrust on Birdpw for -40 sp, dealing -20 damage.

"That's good. We could go a little longer, but... I don't want to worry anyone at camp," Tuftpaw nodded sagely.

Tuftpaw was old enough to be a warrior by now, but her training had been slow due in part to some of the troubles of the forest and her own stubbornness. If she could even remember being alive for last greenleaf, it didn't quite matter. Still, she shook a little while imagining the heat. "We'll survive. Or catch on fire. Either or--"

She was cut off when a goose honked its way through the trees, almost seeming to want to take a bite out of poor Birdpaw. As the beak open and shut in a near-miss, Tuftpaw was already moving to position herself for an attack. This goose wasn't going to get away with any cat blood today. Or, at the very least, not very much.

"On it!" she replied, charging up her speed to body the goose. Hopefully, it'd make it think twice!

Birdpaw offered the other apprentice a smirk. Hopefully this greenleaf wouldn't be quite as bad as that. It seemed like the clan couldn't catch a break from everything she had heard.

As Tuftpaw charged at the goose, Birdpaw leaped upon its back, unsheathed claws sinking into feathers.

Birdpaw used Leap and Hold for -10 sp, dealing -6 damage. Goose is pinned for one turn and cannot attack.

The tackle appeared to have thrown the goose off for the time being. With little time to react, Birdpaw had it in her grasp. Tuftpaw took the distraction to perform a heavy claw attack on their mutual opponent.

The goose thrashed beneath Birdpaw, and her grip wasn't as secure as she had hoped. Her claws raked through feathers once more before she slipped and dropped back to the ground. The goose was clumsy in regaining its' footing, which allowed Birdpaw to slash at exposed belly before it had time to do much else. The goose seemed to be much more sluggishly than it had been, bleeding from multiple wounds. Birdpaw just hoped that she and Tuftpaw could escape with minimal damage.

Tuftpaw watched the goose manage to shake off Birdpaw, which caused her to swear under her breath. While she prepared for her next attack, Birdpaw was already on the ground and under the enormous bird. Ruthlessly, claws raked the underside. It was her chance to weaken the beast further. Without hesitation, Tuftpaw sliced through bloodied feathers, claws unsheathed. With how thick the down of this bird was, she was unsure how much damage she was actually doing, but blood loss was certainly helping their cause.
