Eaglekit's Apprentice Ceremony

Bloodstrike hed waited for this day with more eagerness than even he expected. Once the sun had hit the top of the trees, he crawled out of the medicine den and walked to the leader's den. Of all of his children and grandchildren, Eaglekit reminded him of himself the most. Maybe not in appearance, but certainly personality. It was true that Bloodstrike had been more temperamental than excitable, but ever since the tree climbing he'd witnessed and Eaglekit's reactions to things, the deputy had taken a keen interest in the kit.

"Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather for a clan meeting!" He shouted out across the camp. He waited patiently for everyone to arrive. If you do well for us, Eaglekit, I just might name you deputy when my time comes to be named Bloodstar.

Soon. Someday soon, he would no longer be confined to the camp. Blue eyes stared longingly at the camp entrance from his perch on a low branch. What would it be like… to be out there? Where the trees were taller, and the prey ran openly. His body shivered with anticipation for that day. Claws dug into the bark firmly, far more than his first attempt. Then he’d been a tiny kit, now he was a big kit.

He barely fit in the nursery nest anymore. Both him and his sister… that meant it had to be soon. His head turned towards the edge of the camp, attention drawn by a call. Bloodstrike sat on top of the large rock used for clan meetings.

Eaglekit leapt down from his tree. His eyes scanned the gathering cats for the orange of his father, or the darker pointed pelts of his mother and sister. This was it! At least, he hoped it was. Not something worse, like something that could delay his apprenticeship. He padded into the crowd of cats, then pushed forward until he was among those in the front row. Whatever it was, he wanted a front-seat view.

"Eaglekit step forward. You have reached the age of six moons and you are ready to become an apprentice. From today until you earn your warrior name, you will be called Eaglepaw. Wolfstar will be your mentor." Bloodstrike was sure to say his father's name loudly. He had a tendency to hide and brood a lot, hopefully it would be enough to get his attention. Bloodstrike still had a hard time looking at Wolfstar and they hardly spoke since Bloodstrike had come back. He would remedy that in time, but for now he would let the new apprentice speak to his mentor in peace.

‘I KNEW IT!’ Eaglekit thought proudly when he stepped forward. He wondered who he would get as his mentor… his father? One of the newer warriors or even better, what if it was Bloodstrike!? His thoughts flew quickly, but not louder than the voice of the deputy on the rock.

Who just declared Wolfstar his mentor.

The leader.

He blinked. Expected for a moment to wake up in his nest. Except he could feel the ground beneath his claws, hear his clanmates shifting around him. He turned towards Wolfstar and grinned, immediately running over and stopped directly in front of the older tom.

“This is so cool! I get to learn from you!? Will you show me the best ambush spots for hunting? Oh, oh! Can you show me some awesome battle moves? You must know a ton! How do you climb up to the highest branches? Isn’t it so fun!?” Eaglepaw’s excited voice chattered.
