On the Wings of Eagles [Tinypaw]

The moon was just rising over the trees as Mistyfalcon led his patrol into the pine grove, tail flicking back and forth. He'd been tasked to hunting with Tinypaw tonight, and while they had been denmates before, Mistyfalcon found that he knew little about the apprentice. The potential for awkward conversation made his anxiety spike, though outwardly the warrior appeared calm.

Why was Ebonysong doing this to him? He'd been given a chatty, inquisitive, extroverted apprentice, and now he was tasked with patrolling with those in the clan he knew the least. Mistyfalcon supposed it made sense. Clanmates needed to know how to work together, after all, but he couldn't quite shake his own unease. Beyond gruff courtesies, he was a tom of few words prone to awkward silence. With those he knew well it was easier, but he still wasn't particularly social. To cats like Tulipfang, it came off as rude. Brighteye had loved him for it, and Batglow and Murkystrike readily accepted the taciturn tom without complaint. He supposed he'd find out which cat Tinypaw was closer to, tonight.

A tattered ear flicked in Tinypaw's direction as Mistyfalcon slowed his pace, jaws parting slightly as he sought out the scent of prey.

Tinypaw trotted along after Mistyfalcon, wide eyes trained on the warrior as he followed him through the pines. When Ebonysong had told his former denmate to bring him along on a hunting patrol, Tinypaw could practically feel the anxiety rolling off the other tom almost immediately. He hadn’t stopped twitching since they’d left camp— and he hadn’t said more than a hello to Tinypaw either.
Well, we’re not out here on a stroll through the pines after all. If Mistyfalcon wanted to hunt in silence, then all he could really do was oblige him. Besides, Tinypaw needed to focus more on his training— he’d never be a warrior if he couldn’t save pestering his clanmates until after the freshkill pile was filled.
When Mistyfalcon slowed and began to search for a scent trail, Tinypaw stopped and followed the older tom’s lead, ears pricked for any sound that might give away prey he hadn’t scented yet.

Tinypaw said nothing, and it was just as well, for Mistyfalcon had picked up the scent of mouse. Turning, the dark tom slipped into a crouch and followed the scent, spotting the mouse near the base of a pine tree. He crept forward, then leapt, one forepaw pinning the mouse by the tail as he quickly nipped it to end its' suffering.

The mouse was quickly buried beneath some dried mud and pine needles, and Mistyfalcon took note of where Tinypaw was before continuing his search for prey. If the apprentice wasn't keen on conversation, Mistyfalcon might actually be able to relax. He'd been known to patrol in silence before, and most of the cats he tended to patrol with had done little to discourage that habit. He and Tinypaw hadn't shared a den in over a season now, and hadn't been close even then. Mistyfalcon was okay with that, though he could almost hear the scolding of one of the more sociable warriors in the back of his mind even so.

As Murkystrike stalked off towards his prey, Tinypaw flicked an ear in the opposite direction. With a thrill of satisfaction he realized he could hear the faintest scuffling in the pine needles that littered the forest floor.
He turned towards it and quickly caught the scent— and then, a moment later, the sight— of a mouse among the roots of an old pine.
Nimbly as he could on his short legs, Tinypaw crept forward in a practiced hunting crouch until he was a tail length away and then— he pounced and landed squarely on the mouse, finishing it off before it had even noticed he was even there.
He let out a purr of satisfaction and quickly stashed the catch before moving on in search of more prey.

Mistyfalcon caught sight of Tinypaw burying his own catch, and merely nodded, continuing to search for his own prey. That search was interrupted by the soft rush of feathers, however.

"Foxdung." Mistyfalcon let out a low growl as talons raked his back, and the warrior twisted around, sinking his fangs into the owl's wing before it could try that again. At least if he had it in his jaws, it wouldn't be able to attack a clanmate.
