Subject: Sign of the Moon [Moonpaw] Sat Mar 27, 2021 1:41 pm
True to his word, Mistyfalcon poked his head into the apprentice den at sunset, dark gaze settling on his new apprentice.
"Moonpaw, let's go." He called into the den before taking a step back. The moon would be rising by the time they made it out to the pine grove, and Mistyfalcon planned to start with hunting tonight. They'd hunted together before, but she'd been a member of the Asylum then, and she would need to learn to hunt as well as she did in the daytime.
When the apprentice made her way out of the den, Mistyfalcon flicked his tail, signaling for her to follow as he turned toward the camp entrance. It felt refreshing to not have to wait for a guard to accompany him, and Mistyfalcon set a brisk pace towards the pine grove before slowing to a stop and turning towards the newly-named Moonpaw.
"You'll need to get used to doing things at night now, and that includes hunting. Now, tell me if you can pick up any signs of prey."

Moonpaw had hardly slept during the day. She was already rearing to go when Mistyfalcon came to get her from the den. She stepped outside and followed after him, desperately trying to contain her excitement. She stumbled over a root that she hadn't seen... whoops! Getting used to hunting at night would be a challenge, but one that she was willing to tackle whole-heartedly. As he spoke, she listened and nodded. Her ears swiveled in all directions, listening for even the tiniest sound that was out of place. She inhaled deeply through her nose and parted her jaws.
"There are... definitely musky prey smells aside from the scent of the terrain... I think I hear mice... that way?" She nodded once towards the darkness. While all cats could see at night, she had never really hunted much in actual blackness like this. There was not always a full moon out to guide her either. She needed to get used to that if she was going to be in Shadowclan as a full-fledged member.

He noticed she stumbled over the terrain in the dark, but if she wasn't going to complain, Mistyfalcon figured that the apprentice was fine. It was something she'd get used to, or she wouldn't.
"There is." Mistyfalcon stated simply, nodding in approval as she picked up on the sound of mice. "Think you can catch it? Be careful where you put your paws, as well as your tail." She was familiar with the basics at least, and now he wanted to see her use what she knew in the darkness that surrounded them.

Moonpaw nodded and moved forward carefully. She sunk into a low crouch and used her ears to help her pinpoint the exact location of the mouse. She kept her tail higher than she normally would, as she would rather not end up dragging a stick with her in front of her mentor. She stepped carefully and quietly, only pausing to recalibrate exactly where she would need to go to find the mouse. It may have taken her a bit of time to get there, but she wanted to do this right. Speed would come naturally to her as she got the hang of hunting in blackness better.
Once she felt confident that she was close enough, but not too close, Moonpaw leaped quietly forward, aiming her paws to come down on the mouse for an easy dispatch... until something ran into her and ruined the entire plan. Moonpaw back-pedaled, realizing that she wasn't necessarily hurt, but that she now had competition for her mouse. She wasn't entirely sure what it was until it turned on her and she saw the black mask across it's eyes. "Oh fantastic... a raccoon." She hissed, immediately dropping into a fighting stance. "Mistyfalcon..? Normally I could handle these guys but it's dark... could you maybe-" It lunged. Right... maybe she shouldn't be talking. She dodged, at least knowing enough of how to fight to get out of the way.

Mistyfalcon watched as his apprentice made good progress. Her form was decent, though he could tell she was still unused to hunting in near-blackness. She'd become used to it, in time.
She leapt, but before she could dispatch the mouse another shape was barreling into her. Mistyfalcon instinctively lunged forward, claws unsheathing as the disgusting odor of raccoon reached his nose. Mistyfalcon was relieved that Moonpaw managed to dodge, and then his own claws were tearing into the raccoon with purpose.
"Go for the belly if you can., but don't take risks." He told her, not intending that the beast be able to go after the young she-cat a second time.
Mistyfalcon used Rending Front Paws for -25sp, dealing -15 damage. Night Finesse is active, +2 damage.

Moonpaw could make out the shape of her mentor and the raccoon. Go for the belly... She watched carefully for it, not wanting to charge in as blind as she was. The instant she saw the raccoon rear back with Mistyfalcon tearing into it, she charged. Her claws tore away at the belly, but she had a feeling she wasn't as on target as she would have liked.

Moonpaw darted forward as the raccoon reared to snap at him, and Mistyfalcon noted that her strike wasn't quite on target, but it was enough.
"Good, you'll get used to fighting like this eventually. I would've preferred sparring first but this is a start." The raccoon's jaws snapped at his shoulder, and Mistyfalcon took advantage and swiped at it with his other paw, unsheathed claws burying themselves in the creature's throat. It caused the raccoon to abruptly release the bit of skin and fur it had gotten hold of, crumpling to the ground.
"Are you alright?" He asked, removing his claws from the raccoon once he was sure it wouldn't be getting back up ever again. The bite to his shoulder stung, but it wasn't anything that Rookfire couldn't take care of later.
Mistyfalcon used Front Paw Strike for -10sp, dealing -12 damage.

Moonpaw watched the raccoon fall and she immediately started to eyeball it's pelt. She knew she wasn't Asylum anymore and she knew that Shadowclan didn't wear pelts.. but why? It was a waste of a perfectly good animal. Still, she knew better than to bring it up with Mistyfalcon. She needed to act like a Shadowclan cat if she wanted to be fully accepted by them.
"Oh yeah I'm fine! Nothing like a little scrap to get the blood flowing..." She stared at his shoulder. Was that appropriate? "...No uh... pun intended? She flashed him a grin and gave a nervous laugh. Yeeeaaahhh... back to hunting. She turned awkwardly away and tried to find something actually huntable again. Her ears picked up more rustling further off... maybe another mouse. Probably even.
She stalked her way toward it... this time actually listening for more than just the mouse in the leaves. She leaped again once she was sure she was close. So help me if I miss this...
Alas, he paws were uninterrupted this time as she clamped her claws closed over the rodent's body. Her teeth shot for it's head that she could just make out in the darkness. It wasn't a big kill, but it still proved that she wasn't completely worthless. She held it up for Mistyfalcon to see, her chin higher than it normally was. I caught it! I caught it! I caught it! She bounced on her toes a little bit as she chanted to herself in her head victoriously. Tonight was turning out to be a decent night... all things considered...

The pun earned Moonpaw a growl and an exaggerated eye-roll, but there was no real animosity behind it. She was uninjured, which was good. Tomorrow night would be sparring, he decided. She seemed to pick up on things quickly, and Mistyfalcon nodded in approval as the apprentice turned in search of more prey.
"Good catch." He mewed, offering praise and a silent thanks that this attempt hadn't ended in another fight. Mistyfalcon turned in search of his own prey, and almost smiled at the large grey form he spotted between the trees. He slid into a crouch, carefully creeping forward until his target was in range.
His paws slammed into the hare and he quickly ended it's life, turning almost smugly back to Moonpaw with a smirk.
Mistyfalcon attempted to catch a hare for -3 sp. 202 / 240 sp
