Quoth the Raven [Ravenclaw]

Birdpaw shook out her long fur, eager to start the day's training as she made her way from the apprentice den. She hadn't realized it, but the lack of Asylum's presence made the forest feel different. Like there was a weight that had lifted. Ravenclaw had seemed happier than Birdpaw had ever seen her, so did the rest of the clan, or most of them, anyways.

"What are we doing today?" She asked as her mother led her from camp. Snow was melting, but there were hints of green in their drab territory that Birdpaw had never seen before. It seemed like even the forest itself was glad to be rid of the strange rogues that had occupied it since before their birth.

"We're going on patrol," Ravenclaw responded, leading Birdpaw out of camp with a bit of a skip in her step. Was everything perfect? Of course not. She was still struggling with the lie of her kits' parentage and her neverending feelings for Wrenspring. Things weren't all bad, though. The Asylum cats were gone and the forest had been returned to the rightful owners. And if she saw Dawnhawk around, she would be oh-so glad to put an end to his miserable, traitorous life. Even something as simple as a patrol felt refreshing, as it was one she and Birdpaw could do without guards breathing down their necks.

Patrolling, right. It would be good to not have to worry about rogues telling them where they could and couldn't go, and she'd be able to see the borders at last. Birdpaw was happy to pad along side her mother, fluffy tail flicking in excitement.

The apprentice was more wrapped up in her own contentment, and it wasn't until a shadow passed over her from above and she felt the wind in her face that she realized something was wrong. That something, it turned out, was a bird. Birdpaw let out a startled cry, lashing out with an unsheathed forepaw as claws stung her shoulder.

A hawk? Of course: there was no rest for them, was there? It was okay, though: Ravenclaw had been waiting for a chance to use her claws on something since the end of the battle against the Asylum. With a rush of adrenaline and her need to protect Birdpaw, she leaped up into the air, slashing at the hawk with her claws. "Keep your claws ready, Birdpaw!" she yowled, flexing her claws as droplets of blood dripped off of them. "Don't let it grab you with its talons!"

Regaining her balance, Birdpaw grinned as her mentor attacked the hawk as well. Ravenclaw was strong and skilled, and Birdpaw hoped she could make her mother proud one day. She wanted to be the best she could be.

Mindful of her mother's words to watch the talons, Birdpaw leap for the hawk before it could rise into the air, claws sinking into feathers. The hawk thrashed as it was pinned beneath the apprentice's weight, and Birdpaw raked at it with her claws.

Birdpaw used Leap and Hold on Hawk for -10sp, dealing -6 damage. Hawk is pinned for TWO turns.

"Good job!" Ravenclaw crowed, the hawk now useless beneath Birdpaw's weight. This was the perfect time to strike. She leapt into action, back kicking the hawk and hearing it shout in pain, though neither of them would understand its strange bird language.

Birdpaw continued to slash at the hawk's feathers, feeling blood welling beneath her claws. It wasn't something she particularly enjoyed feeling like her mother seemed to be enjoying, but the hawk had attacked them and was now paying for it. Her mother's praise made her more determined, and she dug her claws in again as the hawk thrashed beneath her. She wouldn't be able to hold on much longer, but she could tell it was starting to struggle, too.

"We've almost got it," she shouted, continuing to slash at the prostrate hawk. Birdpaw had it to where it couldn't move, and she could feel it weakening beneath her claws. That would teach it to try and attack an apprentice of SkyClan and her mentor!

The hawk finally managed to struggle free of her claws, knocking Birdpaw to the ground as she lost her balance. She managed another swipe at the bird, but her claws grazed feathers before the hawk lifted into the air with weak wingbeats... Then dove at her mother with outstretched talons.

"Mom, watch out!" The last thing Birdpaw wanted was to see her mentor hurt.

While Ravenclaw was too big of a cat to be carried off by the hawk, she was still susceptible to pain. She hissed angrily as the hawk's talons scarred across her back. While she wasn't knocked out of the fight, it did aggrieve her greatly. She whirled around on the hawk, snarling and hissing as she leaped at the hawk, slashing her claws across its face and taking it down to the ground. Its body now lied across the ground, feeble caws coming from its beak. Putting it out of its misery, Ravenclaw bit down on its neck, then stood over it and yowled in triumph. The adrenaline of the moment was coursing through her veins, and she was willing to indulge in their success in that moment.
