Sweet Dreams Are Made of This [C]

Dawnhawk finally managed to get around to training his apprentice after juggling duties as the new Asylum Standard Captain as well as being Skyclan's Deputy. It was far from an easy task and he found a lot of his time was consumed by work. He could have maybe slept in a little bit later, and would have, but he had an apprentice to train. He grumbled a bit to himself, scolding himself for taking on so many duties at once. He was tired and fairly irritable, but he'd do his best to not take it out on Muddypaw. Take on a new apprentice, I thought! It'll be fun to watch everyone squirm, I thought! A low growl even rumbled at the back of his throat, all contempt aimed at himself. He stepped into the apprentice den with a sigh, this time not caring who he woke up as long as his own apprentice was one of them. They could all go back to sleep if they wanted... unlike him.

"Muddypaw get up. I need to teach you how to hunt and then we'll fight today too." He was very blunt and to the point, his patience clearly already wearing horrendously thin. He stepped out of the apprentice den and waited outside. His exhaustion was plain as day on his face and his typically stellar pelt was slightly greasy and unkempt. Why am I like this? He thought to himself as another wave of exhaustion, as well as irritation, hit him like a truck. Always gotta be accepting more jobs and more responsibilities and do more things! You're not as smart as you think, Dawnhawk! You're a stupid rat and nothing more.

Muddypaw drowsily opened an eye as he heard his mentor's voice, only to leap to his paws as soon as he registered what was happening. The first few days of his apprenticeship had been nowhere near what he had expected, since Dawnhawk seemed to be so busy, but he was still eager to go out on his first patrol. Since he didn't know how to hunt, he had been stuck doing boring camp duties like caring for the elders. He had nothing against Sprucesnow, in fact he bite enjoyed the older cat's company, but patrolling was way cooler. "I'm ready!"

He shook a few scraps of moss of his pelt, but put no effort in to smooth it down, since he knew it would just be a waste of time. His pelt didn't ever listen to anyone, even Primroselight, no matter how hard she had tried for his ceremony. "What are we going to do first?"

The apprentice was ready to go fairly quickly, which at least made Dawnhawk somewhat satisfied. The fire and excitement in Muddypaw's eyes.... was a bit overshadowed by his messy pelt. Dawnhawk made a mental note to scold him afterward, maybe knock him down a few pegs if he was successful today.

"Hunting." He said simply and turned on his heel toward the forest. Muddypaw would follow, he was sure. He padded through the forest in silence, his mind elsewhere for most of the trek. A robin fluttered on some low branches, triggering Dawnhawk's hunting mode but only then did he realize that he hadn't explained to the apprentice how to hunt. He was losing his edge. Lack of sleep was making him sluggish and unprepared. And irritable.

"Watch me. If you need further instruction afterward, let me know. After I catch this bird you'll try." He then sunk into a crouch and crept forward, balancing his weight across his four paws and held his tail out behind him above the layer of dried leaves.

Creeping up on the bird was surprisingly easy... It was busy gathering nesting material it seemed. That was fine with Dawnhawk. He didn't want a challenge today. He got within easy jumping distance of the branch and kicked off of the ground. His claws extended towards the robin, attempting to swipe it from the air as it realized it was in danger and took flight.

Dawnhawk attempted to catch the robin. It was successful! -3 SP

The robin was hooked by his claws and pulled to earth where Dawnhawk swiftly dispatched it. He carried the bird back to his apprentice to show his success before finding a spot to bury it by easily recognizable rocks.

"Any questions before you try?" His tone was flat, but his tired eyes were otherwise attentive.

"Uhh... No?" Muddypaw said, hoping it was the right answer. He had never seen a warrior actually hunt before, and he had assumed it would be a lot more like playing mossball, but watching Dawnhawk smoothly kill the robin worried him. How did he make it look so easy? Actually, as far as he knew, hunting could be the easiest thing in the world, and he wouldn't know until he tried it.

He caught the scent of mouse nearby, and eagerly made his way towards it. However, he wasn't the only hunter out today in search of mice. He had just began to creep towards it when an owl swooped down from the trees and snatched the little rodent up. "HEY! That was mine!" Muddypaw shouted indignantly, annoyed that his opportunity to impress his mentor had been taken away. With his claws unsheathed claws, he slashed at the large-eyed bird, but immediately regretted it. Shouldn't have done that. Shouldn't have done that. Shouldn't have done that. He thought when it whipped around to face him and struck out.

"Dawnhawk! Owl!" His head throbbed with pain from the owl's sharp talons, but he didn't stand a chance without a warrior by his side.

Muddypaw used 5 Sp to catch a mouse. Catch was unsuccessful and summoned a predator!
