An Awkward Excursion

As the sun approached its highest point in the sky, Blossomstep gave herself a quick grooming before standing near the entrance to camp. She had been assigned to a hunting patrol, but she wasn't sure who all would be joining her. Her fluffy tail curled loosely around her thin frame as she waited patiently for the rest of the patrol, noting as five of the Asylum cats flanked her. Her ear twitched slightly, this must be a larger hunting patrol. The number would make it more difficult to hunt efficiently, but perhaps if the went to the Great Ridge it wouldn't be so bad, since the could spread out and corner their prey. She was pulled from her thoughts by the sound of an approaching set of paw steps, and she turned, surprised to hear only one. That surprise heightened when she realized who the steps belonged to. Her mouth went dry, and she stared at the tom for several heartbeats before acknowledging him properly. Lowering her head slightly, her voice was strained and almost hoarse sounding. "Wolfstar." She waited for a while longer, but when no others approached she flicked her tail slightly. "I take it it's just the two of us, unless some cat is running very late. Shall we be on our way?" She asked, looking at him with a carefully guarded expression.

A slow huff of frosty breath dissipated into the air in front of his face as Wolfstar made his way towards the gathering patrol. There were several Asylum cats, as usual, but there was also a familiar, gray-striped pelt that made the leader's breath catch in his chest. Blossomstep. Stars, it would have to be her, wouldn't it? The one cat who he couldn't bear to look at for fear that his heart would fall right out of his chest.

"I... yes, I suppose we should..." he said softly, his ears sliding back against his head. He moved past her, his pelt so close he almost touched her, could feel the warmth emanating off her body. His eyes scrunched shut, and he pressed onward. With such a large group, they needed somewhere that they could split up yet still be close enough to hear one another. And the Great Ridge made the most sense. So he lead them there, quiet for the first several moments, before cautiously extending a tentative olive branch. "So... how... how have you been?"

Wolfstar's ears flattened against his head as he past her, and Blossomstep's heart twisted painfully. Was he still so enraged at her that he couldn't even bear to look at her? He was so close, all she would have to do was move forward the tiniest bit... And then he was gone. The warmth that had been there just a heartbeat before was gone, instead replaced by a chill that Blossomstep had experienced many times in the days since their fight. Swallowing down the lump that had risen in her throat, she followed the group out and away from camp with her head lowered to hide the pain and grief in her eyes.

The patrol made their way to the Great Ridge, and Blossomstep hesitated as Wolfstar did, the Asylum cats that joined them having dissipated to start their hunts. She was starting to think that he wasn't going to say anything, and had just turned to move away when his voice finally came. Keeping her side to him and looking ahead, she paused midstep before placing her paw back down. "I've been alright. Things could be better." She mewed quietly, tail tip flicking slightly. "What about you? How have you been, Wolfstar?" She asked in turn, his name still feeling foreign on her tongue. As she waited for an answer, a chittering sounded nearby, and a squirrel came darting out towards her. An Asylum cat stood a bit farther away, staring in their direction. Resisting the urge to hiss, she stepped into the squirrel's path and caught it, killing it quickly before looking back to the Asylum cat. They dropped their head almost as if they were embarrassed before disappearing once again, and Blossomstep placed the squirrel between her and Wolfstar.
