Brookkit's Apprentice Ceremony

Maplewhisker followed the trail to the top of the Tallrock, the chilly wind of leaf-bare ruffling her pelt. as she sat upon it, she called out the familiar call that would summon the Clan to gather.  The presence of the Asylum cats was all too noticeable as cats filed into the clearing.
"Let all cats old enough to run on the moor gather beneath the Tallrock for a Clan meeting!"

Brookkit sat neat and proper by the tallrock, pelt meticulously groomed by her mother. Her eyes glistened with excitement as she stared up at Maplewhisker, determined to be seen as only the best.

"Brookkit, step forward." The black senior warrior rasped as she stood in the middle of camp with the rest of Windclan. Her eyes hardly spared the Asylum cats milling about so much as a meager glance. Instead, he gaze was trained on the young she-kit, "From this day forward, you will be known as... Brookpaw. Downtuft will be your mentor." It was a simplistic ceremony but enough to properly present the she-cat before the clan. Hayglow would be a good mentor; Brookpaw would surely learned a lot. With a nod of her head, she left the clan to cheer on their new clanmate.

Why me, Downtuft thought as he stared on in horror. What could he have possibly done so wrong to be punished with another apprentice? Was... Was this a joke? Had Maplewhisker put the black she-cat up to this? Oh, he'd have a word or two with her.

Brookpaw met his gaze with the same amount of horror, as if she couldn't believe he'd be her mentor and was truly appalled. Shaking his head, the sandy tom fixed her with a cold glare, hoping to wring some respect out of her.

He'd do his best, but something told the warrior this she-cat wouldn't be as cooperative as Dayspring and Violetpaw.

Downtuft?
Sheer horror crossed her face. No, no, no! This couldn't possibly get worse. As Brookpaw turned to face her new mentor, their matching gazes of horror met and Brookpaw wrinkled her nose as Downtuft gave her a cold look.

Of course her mentor would be this idiot. Arrogant, self-centered, rude, prickly porcupine! Just when she thought she had freedom. "You better not slow me down, elder!" She sneered, a fiery tone in her voice. Huffing, she turned and trotted away to her sister.
