Flowers in the snow

Primroselight waited patiently at the entrance of camp for her apprentice to join her. It was almost sun-high, but a chilly breeze swept through the clearing. They were lucky it wasn't snowing, but a thin layer of powder still lay over the territory and camp. It would definitely cause for interesting conditions to learn in. When she scented her Jasminepaw coming towards her, she stood up, thankful that the newly-named apprentice hadn't kept her waiting too long in the cold. "Are you ready?" Then it crossed her mind that all patrols needed a watch. When will we get to stop doing this? A twig snapped in the bushes nearby, just outside the camp wall, and her head swung round towards it. "You, behind the barrier. I know you're there, I can smell you. Come, join our patrol." She had been quite short with him, but she didn't have time to waste on rouges.

Jasminepaw bounded across camp in a sporadic manner, hopping in the thin layer of snow and kicking up flurries. Stumbling, she rolled onto her back, speckling her pelt with snow. Looking up, she saw Primroselight and wondered why the she-cat didn't wave her tail in greeting until she remembered the pretty molly was blind. "I am!"

Jasminepaw's enthusiasm faded for a second as she took in the tone Primroselight regarded the strange cat with, but she shrugged it off. "What are we doing first?" She whispered, excitement evident from her posture.

Primroselight smiled cheerfully at her apprentice's enthusiasm, but hoped that she hadn't curbed it with her harsh words to the rouge. She knew that she would never speak to a clanmate like that, but these cats... they weren't worth anything. They had attacked them in the middle of the night - she had no reason to be courteous towards them. Maybe if they were young, she would give them a chance, but the majority of them, she didn't care at all for.

"I was thinking that I show you the territory while we hunt," She said. With Graybird, she hadn't shown her a large amount of the territory, as the foxes had still been hunting them, and so much of the forest was still recovering after the fire. Although, in the snow, she imagined that it probably looked different. It certainly smelt different, almost as if the powder muffled the scents of plants and prey.

She lead Jasminepaw out of camp, now and again pointing out certain things. By now, the warrior knew the forest unbelievably well, since every root could be a tripping hazard for her. Still, she mostly stuck to areas where she hunted often, just for the ease of it. "I think here's a good place to stop," She said. The whole time they had been padding through the territory, she had taken no notice of the rouge with them. As far as she cared, he could do anything he wanted, as long as Jasminepaw was safe. "Try this," She instructed, dropping into a hunting crouch, "Keep your tail just above the ground, so it doesn't drag, but also doesn't stick up like a bluebell."

As Primroselight dropped into a hunting crouch, Jasminepaw's eyes lit up in awe. Her mentor was so cool! "R-right, Primroselight!" She mewed, hoping desperately to impress her mentor.

Doing her best to mimic her mentor, she shifted her paws slightly closer together. Her tail was a tad bit too high, but she'd gotten the crouch mostly correct.

"Ok, just take a few steps forward." Primroselight instructed, ears pricked and listening for anything that might indicate a need for improvement. All seemed good so far. She gently ran her paw along the young cat's back, checking that her form was good, but careful not to unbalance her. For the most part, she had copied it pretty well. "Just lower your tail a little, and that should be all good!"

"I think you're all good to start hunting now. Just like with the crouch, watch me first, and then try your best to replicate it." Since the two Skyclanners had been talking fairly loudly, Primroselight had to stray a little to find prey scent, but still kept within a safe radius of her apprentice. Eventually, a robin caught her attention, so she crept towards it, paying more attention than normal to her technique so she would appear a better example. The small bird's song made it easy to track even through the snow, and when she was near enough, she leapt to catch it, and her claws dug its wings. She killed it and brought it back to Jasminepaw to show her.

"Like that. Your turn now. Do you smell that squirrel over there?" The warrior flicked her tail to where, a few fox-lengths away, a squirrel sat. Hopefully it would be an easy catch or a learning experience; both were needed in training apprentices. Also not running into any predators. That would certainly be useful.

As Primroselight explained, Jasminepaw nodded, paying very close attention. Her tail lowered a bit as her mentor had instructed and with wide eyes the brown and white molly watched the flame point she-cat easily catch a robin. So cool! She thought.

Primroselight brought Jasminepaw out of her thoughts and she turned to look at the squirrel Primroselight had pointed out. Nodding, she slowly crept up to it. The squirrel was preoccupied with a chestnut, and once close enough Jasminepaw leapt and caught it. Turning back to Primroselight, she mewed nervously. "Was that good?"

Primroselight eagerly listened for her apprentice's success, and called out when the scent of fresh squirrel blood hit her nose. "That was great! Now you know what to do, try and scent around for your own prey. I'll check back up on you in a moment." The warrior still stayed near to Jasminepaw, wary of any threats (Asylum or predator) that might be around. She didn't trust their rouge companion enough to protect the young she-cat from danger. However, it turned out the predators were a lot more interested in Primroselight.

A whoosh of wings on the breeze was the only warning she received before talons struck out at her back. She whipped around to face the bird, and her heart sank as she realised it was an eagle, and not, in fact, an owl. Eagles posed a little more of a challenge. And more of a threat to apprentices. Before the winged predator could escape back into the sky, Primroselight grabbed one of its wings in her jaws and clung on, having to root her paws in the ground so she wouldn't be carried off. "Jasminepaw! Watch out, there's an eagle! Try and claw it, but watch the talons." She called, her voice muffled by her mouthful of feathers. The slashes on her back stung, but she had endured much worse, and protecting her apprentice was her first priority. "Quickly! I don't know how long I can hold on!" She was already slipping as the bird angrily thrashed its wings in a desperate bid to escape.

Jasminepaw's eyes went wide as an eagle descended upon them, interrupting their hunt. "P-primroselight..!" The brown patched molly gasped, shaking with fear.

Forcibly shaking her head rapidly, she leapt at the eagle and ran into its side. "A-are you o-okay?" Jasminepaw asked through clenched teeth.

Primroselight gave Jasminepaw a short nod, but the split second of distraction allowed the still struggling eagle to wriggle free. It was getting a little desperate, clearly not expecting such a resistance. I'm not taking any chances. Mountainkit and Sneezingkit's disappearances had been far too recent, and her own apprentice was so small and nearly a kit herself.

She reared up on her hind legs at slashed at the bird's head and wings, trying to injure it enough to make it flee in fear if she wasn't strong enough to bring it down.

Primroselight fought against the eagle strongly for her, and Jasminepaw felt a rush of pride her mentor. Turning around, she dashed up the nearest tree, swaying on a branch. I won't let you done! she thought, unsheathing her claws and jumping down, raking razor sharp claws down feathered wings.

Primroselight's attention was momentarily diverted as she heard Jasminepaw scamper up a tree. No! Be careful! She was about to call out to stop the young apprentice from climbing; they hadn't done any lessons in trees yet (and now she thought about it, she would probably try and get another warrior to take her up - Primroselight hadn't been up in a tree since her climbing incident.) But soon the little she-cat leapt down, unfazed by the height. "Jasminepaw! Try not to cling on if it flies away!" The eagle was probably too exhausted from the battle to carry a cat away, but she wasn't taking any chances.

Once her apprentice had let go, the warrior took the opportunity to kick out at the bird. She may've avoided trees, but she still had strong back legs like any other Skyclan warrior, and the eagle's wingbeats faltered. It began to come at her once again, but clearly thought better. As suddenly as it had appeared, the huge bird escaped back into the sky. "How are you?" She asked, breathing heavily from the fight and surprise of Jasminepaw's climbing.
