RiverClan Apprentice Games

Dewpaw stalked through RiverClan's territory, having taken a path that led her closer to WindClan's moors than the river. She wanted the challenge, and she was absolutely loving these games. The energy in the air fueled her own, and she had practically bounded off at the opportunity to begin. As she walked, a scent caught her nose and she turned towards it, resisting the urge to wiggle her rump as she stalked the hare that had crossed the strip of land that spanned WindClan's moors and RiverClan's land.

Flashpaw was altogether quite displeased with this recent turn of events - specifically, the so-called competition that had her padding through the snow in search of land-prey. She was RiverClan through, and she was most certainly not meant for this. It wasn't that she disliked snow - in fact, it awakened a kitlike sense of wonder, with her mother's tales and teachings of ice-sliding fresh in her mind - but she didn't like hunting in it any more than she liked hunting in grass and trees and rocks.

Which was to say that she didn't care for it at all, unless there happened to be a stream or riverbank close by.

She was an excellent swimmer, a skilled diver, and a talented hunter - so long as her prey was underwater. This entire contest felt like a personal insult, but she wasn't going to back down from a challenge. It was strange, admittedly, to rely more on her sense of smell than sight - a keen eye was a necessity when fishing, to spot the telltale flash of scales. Here, sight would only go so far; scent was far more valuable when it came to reaching striking distance.

As her thoughts drifted, a scent she'd only caught in the camp's fresh-kill pile at a distance reached her nose. This had to be her target - hare, large and rabbitlike; so thoroughly unappealing and yet so impressive a catch - so she drew closer and pounced.

Unfortunately, it seemed that for all her grace she remained a talentless land-hunter; letting out a furious hiss as her less-than-stellar approach led her target to flee before she was even in striking distance.

What a disaster. At least I don't think anyone saw. Well, the Asylum cats were always watching. Anyone that matters, anyway.

Quickly but carefully burying her hare, Dewpaw continued away from RiverClan's camp in search of her next target. The exhilaration from her success had her practically prancing. Suddenly she stopped, another scent hitting her nose. This one was different though, and as she slowly moved forward through the reeds she spotted it, a large magpie pecking the ground in search of worms. Taking a deep breath, she bunched her muscles and leaped forward, hoping to feel feathers under her claws.

Even though the large apprentice was nearly done with her training, Bluepaw didn't quite feel ready to take the next step into warriorhood, especially with the Asylum around, always watching. There was only one Asylum cat in RiverClan that she even remotely felt comfortable around, and she hoped that she was one of the spectators today, in lieu of a more scary one.

Her denmates charged off to see who could bring back the most scarce prey, and while she knew that she'd surely fail this catch, she searched for a hare, if only to prove that she was more skilled than she felt. However, her large size and bumbling paws led to a spectacular failure, with snow cascading into the sky as her paws slipped from underneath her and the hare rocketed away from her, tail bobbing. She just hoped that her denmates hadn't seen that.

After carefully burying the bird, Dewpaw's head rose as she turned to finish the game. She had caught a hare and bird so far, she had one more chance. Just one.... She had to make it count. Should she attempt to find another hare? No, the risk was too much. Besides, she already had one. The bird was a pleasant surprise, and she wondered if she would be able to gift some to her mentor as a prize, whether she won the game or not. Hopefully they would allow it. Perhaps Ivystar would also get a feather! She had never really talked to RiverClan's leader, but she had pretty eyes, and the apprentice hoped that someday she would get the chance. She wove through the reeds in RiverClan's territory somewhat lazily, taking her time as she pondered what she would come across that would peak her interest enough to make an attempt for her final chance. Maybe a squirrel, she thought, turning towards ThunderClan's territory one moment. The next, she was thinking of a rabbit, her paws turning towards WindClan's territory instinctively. Before she knew it, she was closer to Fourtrees than camp, but still well within RiverClan's borders. Frowning, she turned back towards camp, preparing to follow a similar path to her first when a small thing ran in front of her paws. An odd shaped head paired with a long tail and funny legs that stuck out weirdly. Surprised by it, she hesitated a moment before lunging for the scaly body.

Scrambling to her paws following her spectacular failure, Bluepaw looked frantically around for another prey item. Catching sight of a water vole scurrying along the riverbank, she dropped into a crouch, and step by step, slowly approached the creature. When she was in pouncing distance, she leapt, hoping that her aim was true.

Once again, her attempt was quite an impressive failure, as her back paws skidded out from underneath her, and she belly flopped quite painfully on the river bank, and the telltale plop sound of the water vole escaping met her ears. She lashed her tail in frustration as she stood, sadness sweeping over her.
One more try, then I'll go curl up in my nest in shame.
