“Streamtail,” Shrikefrost called to the older warrior. “Let’s fish before the river’s frozen.” He paused, and reluctantly made eye contact with two unfamiliar Asylum cats. “And you two.” His short pelt wasn’t made to cope with the cold. The ground was wet from melted frost and snow, but that meant the river wouldn’t be frozen either, right? It was getting to the point where they could only fish at sunhigh, and soon it would just be land prey on the pile. Shrikefrost was better at catching that over fish, despite being a RiverClan cat, so he wasn’t entirely opposed to that. It was why he was fishing now - to get better, for practice.

Streamtail spun around to see who had called her, when she spotted a younger warrior, Shrikefrost, calling her. Smiling gently, she padded over to the other cat, whom she had known as Shrikekit moons before. "Sure! I needed to go out and stretch my legs." The blue-grey warrior had payed close attention to Wisteriabloom and Shrikefrost and now was the perfect chance to ask about it. As they padded over to the near frozen river, Streamtail stuck a paw into the water to test it out. Just as she imagined, it was near freezing. Jolting slightly and shaking away the freezing cold water droplets, Streamtail reached down again, her pawpads brushing against the scaly feeling of fish. Grinning in triumph, the she-cat hooked her claws in, sending the fish flying onto the slippery riverbank. With a hard blow to the head, Streamtail killed her catch and set it down.

Streamtail had this ability to ignore the Asylum cats tailing them like shadows. If only they were truly shadows, we wouldn't need to worry. Although his expression was forced tight, his flicking tail betrayed his feelings about their companions. Sunrise after sunrise, hopelessness was beginning to get the best of him. He was coming to the realization just now that his Clanmates had before, that there was not a way out of this.

His paws had to keep occupied lest his thoughts get the best of him. Shrikefrost sat next to Streamtail and watched her test the waters. It had to be leaf-bare. If only they could catch fish in the way of swimming in the river, where a majority of the rogues could not follow, or didn't at any rate. “Nice catch,” he said, though only as a way of breaking the silence. The tabby mirrored Streamtail's movements with the same exact precision she had. His paw flashed into the water and a flopping perch arced over the water, landing in Shrikefrost's jaws. The warrior bit down on the fish's neck and set it down next to Streamtail's. “What's your take on... everything?”

Streamtail sighed, before turning towards Shrikefrost. He definitely seemed much more rebellious than most of the RiverClan cats. "I would fight back if I could. But as you see, they have way more numbers than us and I don't think Ivystar wants to risk that." Smiling a little as she thought about Ashpaw, or Duran, as most knew him, Streamtail stuck her paw in the water again, feeling for any scales. "You really hate them, don't you? I've...seen a few mean Asylum cats, but a lot of them aren't too bad." Feeling something smooth on her pawpad, the blue-grey she-cat hooked her claws in and threw the fish up, killing it with another blow to the head. "What about Wisteriabloom? How are you two getting along?"

“She doesn’t want to risk the Clan as a whole, that’s for certain,” Shrikefrost mumbled, a certain edge to his tone. The memory of Loonwhisper’s neck so vulnerably lying under Lyralei’s claws would never go away. Or his own neck, under the green-eyed pelt-wearer’s claws. Ivystar didn’t want either of them to die, he understood that, but if two warriors died so the Clan survived... How could she not care about the Clan more than an individual? Streamtail’s next comment brought the fur on his neck up until it was bristling. “How do you not hate them? If you don’t remember, my brother was nearly killed. I was nearly killed for being the only one brave enough to do anything. As for the ones I’ve met, nothing but arrogance and audacity.” He didn’t care to lower his voice, allowing the guards behind him to clearly hear his words. Any response they made was ignored.

Did Streamtail not know about his and Wisteriabloom’s kits? “I mean... we had kits...” His tail slowly drifted down. “Echokit, Hollykit, Moonkit.” He avoided mentioning Echokit’s sickness. He will recover, Shrikefrost told himself. He has to.

The ghost tabby stood up and edged down the river. The fish were avoiding the area Streamtail and him had caught from. They had to relocate. He picked up the perch from earlier and led her to a flat rock jutting out, over the river. Shrikefrost sat on that rock and held his paw over the water. His technique was sound as once again a fish was pulled out of the frosty water. A good-sized carp. The tom placed it next to his perch. Four fish, so quickly. A good expedition - unless a predator ruined it.

Streamtail understood Shrikefrost's anger towards the Asylum. They had attacked his brother, after all. The blue-grey she-cat wasn't a fan of Lyralei herself, but she had kept quiet about it. Streamtail didn't think that Shrikefrost had any friends in the Asylum. She could be wrong, since she hadn't payed much attention towards Shrikefrost recently, only knowing that him and Wisteriabloom were mates. As much as Streamtail disliked the rule under Asylum, she couldn't hate them as much as Shrikefrost and some of her Clanmates could. That was because the blue-grey warrior had a best friend in the Asylum. Ashpaw was still her friend, even though he had hid himself from RiverClan for so long. Streamtail would keep her mouth shut about it, it wasn't her secret to tell. "You're right." The older warrior agreed hesitantly. As Shrikefrost told her about his kits, Streamtail wanted to smack herself. Of course, there were new kits in the nursery. She just hadn't known their names and who their parents were. Gazing at the pile of fish in front of her, Streamtail nodded at Shrikefrost. "We should go back. I'm pretty sure that this is enough fish."

"Yeah, but you don't really hate them. Your voice makes that clear enough." Shrikefrost shook his head to himself and stood. "What if one of your kits had been in Loonwhisper's position? Would you hate them now?" His left ear gave a flick in acknowledgement of Streamtail's words, and he picked up the carp and perch. Their hooded escorts led the way back to camp. Led the way back. They shouldn't know our territory so well, but they do. Is there really no getting out of this? He had gone on patrol to clear his mind of these thoughts, yet they were everywhere. Shrikefrost scowled beneath the two fish his jaws held. Not to mention the sickness in his kits, or the missing kits - didn't they have enough problems already?
