Ready or Not (Closed for xmas-bunny)

Ashstorm woke up early, but waited for a while, just walking around the camp and talking to some of the other cats in her clan.  She waited for the sun to get fully over the horizon, before she walked to the apprentice den.  She peeked into the den, afraid to walk in, because it could possibly waking up other apprentices.  "Mistypaw," Ashstorm called into the den.  "Are you ready to begin training?" She sat down on the outside of the den and waited for the new apprentice to respond.

Mistykit, now paw, flinched slightly, and managed to lift her gaze to meet her new mentor's. She hadn't really been asleep for long, the excitement of finally being an apprentice bit at her insides. She was so happy, but still, she felt an injustice had been done in waiting so long for her ceremony. At-least now I'm an apprentice, she thought trying to negotiate with herself. But, something about the look of Dawnhawk left a fury in her paws.

As she lifted herself from her nest, she opened her maw and quietly mewed back, "Yes I'm ready.". Plain, to the point, but really she was overjoyed. She couldn't just forget though, and her face kept the cold façade. Was it a façade though? Mistypaw asked herself, as she quickly tidied up her pelt and slipped from the den- revealing her calico and mostly white fur. She didn't know what to do with these feelings, maybe use them to fuel herself for training.

Mistypaw was definitely not as enthusiastic as Ashstorm was on her first day of being an apprentice, or if she was, she seemed to hide her emotions as well as Dawnhawk.  Ashstorm took a deep breath in and looked back at her apprentice.  "Alright," she said, smiling at her new apprentice.  "Let's go." she tried her best to make that not sound like a command.  She waited for Mistypaw to get up and led her into the trees, unfortunately accompanied by one of the many Asylum cats that she may or may not have been hissing at under her breath.  Can I not do anything alone anymore? her mind bitterly asked.

She took a couple deep breaths to calm her anger.  She knew that she should not get in a fight with another cat when her apprentice was watching.  She shook her head and put on a smile.  She could fight this cat later, but right now it was time for her to train her first apprentice.  When they were surrounded by trees with no other cats, but the Asylum cats around, she turned towards Mistypaw.

"So, I guess we should start with the basics," she exclaimed, determined to do this slower than Dawnhawk did with her.  "To catch something small like a bird or a mouse, you first get into a stance like this." Ashstorm got low to the ground, but made sure her tail was up and her fur did not drag.  She put her front paws in front of her, trying to get as low as her large body could go.  "And you need to make sure to make as little noise as possible." She took a couple of steps forward, almost no noise forming when the pads of her paws touched the ground.  "Then you just pounce."  She stood back up in a regular stance.  "Here, I will demonstrate it with a real animal." She looked around for a moment and then found a bird landing on the ground to get it's morning snack.  She took the stance that she had shown her apprentice a moment ago and slowly walked towards the prey.

Unfortunately, the bird flew away as soon as she pounced, leaving her on the ground with nothing between her claws.  She stood up and stomped her front paw.  That was embarrassing to say the least.  "Do you need me to try that again or do you think you got it?  Or do you have any other questions?"

Of course just as she asked that question, a sound came from behind one of the trunks of the trees.  A snake slithered out, it's eyes locked on Ashstorm.  Oh, come on.  She motioned for Mistypaw to stay back, she did not want her of all cats getting hurt today.  When she turned her head towards her apprentice for a moment to see if she was listening, but at the same time, the snake moved quickly and bit into her left shoulder.  A sharp hiss escaped her and she wanted to retreat, but she was going to teach and protect this cat, no matter how painful it may be.

The outing had started about as well as she had expected it to, but with the addition of an asylum cat breathing down their necks. She had forgotten that they were to attend every matter with every cat. Glancing towards them, she had no specific emotion that she associated with them. Since she was younger, it was as if she was predisposed into thinking that she would be able to take them on, or if not then that they wouldn't be as much of a nuisance as they seemed to be.

The asylum is stupid. She decided to herself, in her mind where no Asylum cats could hear her.

Suddenly, it was as if the undergrowth had sprung into life, gained a vine like body and grew teeth that knew where to go faster than the body could take it.

Mistypaw stood back as Ashstorm told her to, inching away from the scene. Fear crept up her neck and down her spine portraying itself in a now spikey pelt. She did not leave however, and could not compel herself to act either. For starclan's sake do something Mistypaw! Mistypaw unsheathed her claws but looked down at her familiar limbs and witnessed them shake more than a tree did in a storm. As her new mentor let out a hiss of pain, Mistypaw shut her eyes tight and looked away, managing to wince even though it had not been her who was attacked. She held her breath and opened her eyes, the snake had become attached to Ashstorm!

She had no idea what to do. In the moment many thoughts came to her, many that blamed her for what had happened. Why am I so unlucky? Now it is even affecting the people around me... she did not, or rather, could not keep that train of thought for long as her eyes stayed locked onto the snake and fear kept her frozen in place. "S-sn..ake!" she managed to let escape from her maw.

Of course, the Asylum cat nearby did not care what was happening.

Ashstorm shook herself until the beast flew off of her.  She ran towards it and scratched the creature, taring off the flesh and watching the blood pour out of it.  She trapped it under her claws.  Ashstorm looked at her apprentice who was shaking.  In Ashstorm's mind she herself was freaking out, but she needed to comfort her apprentice.  "It's okay, Mistypaw," she attempted to comfort her while holding the snake under her paws.  "It's almost dead, see?"  Of course, at that very moment, the snake slipped out of her paws.  It went towards Mistypaw.  For a moment, Ashstorm felt like she could not breathe.  Oh, no.  Oh, no.  Oh, no.  Ashstorm quickly got up and bolted in front of Mistypaw and towards the snake.  She got there just in time, but not enough time before the snake again slipped its sharp teeth into her leg.  She stumbled and fell, feeling a sharp pain in her leg when she hit it on the ground, hitting the snake on the ground with it.  The snake quickly slithered out from under her leg, but, thankfully, stayed focused on her.  Hurting from the sharp pain, she called to her apprentice, "It's almost dead Mistypaw!  A couple more scratches and it's dead.  Go for the back so it does not see you, please.  Finish it, Mistypaw!"
