Flashing Paws

The sun had just started to rise when Goldengale stepped out of WindClan's camp, her apprentice Flashpaw behind her. The apprentice had grown quickly, and she smiled as she glanced back at him. Soon he would be making the trek to the Moonstone.... She wondered who he would see. "The rabbits will be sleeping warm in their dens, so they'll be slow and easy to sneak up on if we get the chance. We're going to find one of the dens that link off of the tunnels, I'll go into the tunnel to spook them out while you wait to ambush them at the entrance. By that point, we should be able to split off a bit, I'd like to watch you do some solo-hunting. I'm making a report to Olivestar about your progress, so do your best, okay?" She mewed, her tail grazing the grass as she smiled at the tom.

It wasn't long before the pair found a small hole, and Goldengale gestured to it with her tail silently. Nodding towards a larger opening not too far off, the she-cat made her way on light paws to the larger opening. She looked back to Flashpaw before disappearing inside the earth. The dirt brushed against her whiskers, and she used her tail to guide her as she followed her nose towards the rabbit's resting place. Once she was sure she had found it, she let out a yowl, and her tail curled as she heard the rabbits start and begin to scramble away from her sound and scent towards the surface. Hopefully Flashpaw was ready!

Flashpaw trotted after his mentor, ears perking as she began to speak. At the mention of a hunting assessment, the young tom couldn't help but beam. "I won't let you down, Goldengale!" He said firmly as he picked up the pace with an excited little spring in his step. He followed her direction and got into position, ears alert and paws ready. Soon, he could hear the scrabbling of the rabbits coming closer.

The thumping of paws grew more and more distant, but in an instant they stopped. Her ears swiveled as she carefully raced back through the tunnels to the surface, head swiveling as she broke into the sunlight to find her apprentice. He stood by the small hole, rabbit dangling from his jaws. Purring as she trotted towards him, she pressed her nose to his shoulder. "Well done, Flashpaw! That was a perfect catch. We'll get you into the tunnels soon, but remember that they're here for a reason. We can absolutely use them to our advantage, especially in leaf-bare as the days and nights get colder and prey doesn't want to leave their warm burrows. You just need to remember to stay vigilant of your surroundings down there." She purred, eyeing up the catch with a grin. That would feed a couple warriors at least. "Let's leave the rabbit hidden here, I want you to set off on your own now. Don't worry, I won't be far behind, but I want to observe your progress for myself, okay?"

Flashpaw couldn’t help but let out a rumbling purr around the rabbit in his jaws. At the mention of sending him into the tunnels on his own, his pleased purr slowly died away in his throat. He eyed the hole the rabbit he now held had come out of warily. He’d never say it out loud, but he’d rather try his paw at swimming like a rabbitbrained Riverclanner than try and squeeze his lanky frame into the tunnels underneath the moor. He carefully laid the rabbit down at Goldengale’s direction and gave his mentor a nod before trotting off to scent for more prey. A chilly Leaf-Fall gust of wind blew the scent of yet another rabbit toward him-- probably scared out of its' burrow by Goldengale's earlier yowling. With a twitch of his whiskers, he dropped into a crouch as he gauged where his prey was and readied himself to spring.

Goldengale waited as her apprentice padded away for a few heartbeats before she stalked after up, keeping the direction of the wind in mind. Before long she found him crouching, and as she followed his gaze she saw the rabbit. Instinct forced her to hold her breath as a moment passed, then another, and just as she started to worry that his hesitation cost him the catch he pounced. Tail curling in pleasure as he stood with the rabbit in his jaws, she nodded to herself. If he kept this up, she would have a good report for Olivestar, and hopefully her apprentice would become a warrior within the moon.

Gently as he could, Flashpaw set the second rabbit down and scraped some dirt and heather over it to retrieve it on the way back to camp. He turned and headed off in another direction with a pleased twitch of his whiskers as he worked on sniffing out another scent trail. This time he came upon a grouse busy picking through the heather for its own meal.

As the tom crept up on the bird, the rustle of the tall grasses he maneuvered through alerted it to his approach. The grouse's head snapped up and its beady gaze looked onto Flashpaw's position. In a heartbeat, the grouse let out a sharp cry of alarm and lifted itself into the air-- he moved as swift as he could and launched himself up after it, but the bird slipped past his paws to safety. "Fox dung!" He cursed under his breath and shook his head. Maybe it was easier to stick to hunting prey without wings...

Goldengale held her breath, too afraid to move and accidentally sabotage her apprentice as he slowly stalked towards a grouse within some heather not too far away. Unfortunately, the tall grass around the tom alerted the bird, and in an instant he leapt and the bird just escaped his claws. His speed was admirable, and had he been a whisker length closer he might have had it.... But grouse were difficult to catch in the best conditions, let alone the currect ones. Tall grass gave the cats away far too easily, and was plentiful in the moors. Noting some pointers she could give her apprentice after (move with the wind, so the prey attributes stray noise to it) she waited to see what Flashpaw would do next.
