Midnight Hunt

Downtuft sighed as he left camp, thinking back on all the events in his thus far. ravenstar-- or Raventail once more, had stepped down and Olivestar had stepped up. Wildflower became deputy, and his sister, Softbreeze, was the lone medicine cat. Of course, he was a warrior now too. During his vigil he came to realize his notable lack of bonds which didn't normally phase him, but with his sister's growing duties, it was becominging painfully clear. Downtuft wasn't known for his friendliness or kindness; that would be his sister.

Yes, of course, Downtuft had friends. Clovertwist, Softbreeze, Finchstar, Ploverpuddle, Olivestar, Zinnia, Crowspirit, Morningdove. But only four of those were alive and one semi-living. Four of them were related to him, one was his mentor, and two others were only friendly with him due to the Righteous Few. So, no, Downtuft didn't really have friends, but he did have a Clan who needed food. He was a Warrior; he could hunt. And so he would. And so he did. The sandy-brown tom hadn't expected to find much more than rabbits, so when a fat vole scurried over the Fourtrees border, Downtuft was quick to give chase, smashing a paw down on its tail before nipping its spinal cord, killing it easily.

Carrying it, he walked over to a nearby rabbit hole that WindClan warriors of old had long since made into a tunnel. Placing the vole down and burying it, he slowly padded inside the tunnel, sniffing the air. Hare! He thought excited, the cream colored pelt flashing away from him, an easy target. Downtuft once more gave chase, adrenaline pumping. After several heartbeats the hare skidded to a stop; th tabby tom could smell its fear scent pulsing. Thump, thum, th-thu-thump thump, Downtuft could hear the terrified beating of the hare's heart as it realized the cat had pursued and that there was no escape. It had ran right into a dead end. Putting the creature out of misery, Downtuft quickly killed it. "Thank you, Finchstar," murmured the tom, refusing to thank StarClan as a whole after....that.

Exiting the tunnel, Downtuft stopped dead as the scent of squirrel hit his nose. Setting the rabbit down gently, he watched as he creature curious peered in front of it, bushy red tail contently flicking. With a hiss, he launched himself, landing squarely on the target. A plump hare, a fat vole, and a squirrel. WindClan would eat well. Retrieving his hare from the tunnel, he dug up his vole. Carrying the vole, smallest of the three, on his head, the other prey hanging from his jaws he retreated, making his way back to camp.
