Strengthening Bonds

Brightpaw had begun to find her apprenticeship boring. She thought she was ready to become a warrior - she trained hard, fought hard. Since Emberspark had died, she had been working even harder, but she was still one of the oldest in the apprentice den. She had been so focused on training recently that she had been growing even more distant from her clan and (one of her only) friends, Ebonysong. Maybe I should hunt with her today, she thought, if she isn't busy. 

"Uhm... Ebonysong?" she called as she neared the entrance of the warrior den. "Are you free to go hunting?"

Ebonysong lurched up from the warrior's den, blinking as she shook her head, confused. When she spotted Brightpaw, the dark-grey warrior instantly padded out of the warrior's den and lead the other she-cat outside. Her eyes softened as Brightpaw asked her to go hunting. "Y--yes. Sure. Losing Emberspark must've been hard for you...but I guess we could go hunting." Swallowing back a lump in her throat, the she-cat turned her head away for a second. Emberspark was one of her best friends in ShadowClan. Ever since he had...disappeared, Ebonysong wasn't always herself. "Let's...head to the Pine Grove..."

Brightpaw didn't directly enjoy Ebonysong's sympathy, but it did make her feel better, even if she wouldn't admit to it. She had noticed that Emberspark had seemed like a close friend of hers. As they headed to The Pine Grove, the white apprentice kept conversation to a minimum. Even though she enjoyed her friend's company, she still preferred to do so in silence, or let the other cat do all the talking. After a short time, they arrived in the prey-filled forest clearing. It was one of Brightpaw's favourite places, a place she often experienced alone. She nodded briefly to Ebonysong before turning to go find some prey.

A few fox-lengths away from the dark warrior, she scented a shrew nibbling at something in its tiny paws. She dropped into a well practised hunting crouch and slowly crept towards it. When she pounced, her paws landed perfectly on top of it and ended its squeaks with a swift bite. Picking it up by the tail, she trotted back to where she had been earlier and searched for a hole to put it in.

Brightpaw used 3 SP to catch a shrew. Catch was successful!

Ebonysong nodded at Brightpaw and they padded along with each other in silence, all the way to the Pine Grove. Instantly, she scented mouse and started tracking it, following the scent deeper into the forest. When she was a good few mouse-tails away from her catch, Ebonysong leapt, unsheathing her claws to trap the mouse between her paws. Before the mouse could even screech, the warrior had already killed it with a bite to the neck. With the limp mouse dangling in her mouth, Ebonysong dug a hole and dropped it inside, before heading back to catch more fresh-kill.

Ebonysong used 3 sp to catch a mouse. Catch was...successful!

Brightpaw continued to hunt and soon scent of a large toad. It didn't take for her long to spot it, and when she did she immediately dropped into a hunting crouch and crept towards it. The prey seemed to be moving fairly slowly, as if it were old or injured. 

Sccreeeeecch

Before she had even had a chance to pounce, a large owl swooped down towards her. Talons outstretched, it first tried to reach her toad. It had run away at the noise, however, and hidden in some unknown place. The bird, bitter at loosing its prey, turned on Brightpaw. "Ebonysong! An owl! Help!" The apprentice knew she wouldn't be able to fight it off alone, even if she would have preferred to.

Brightpaw used 3 SP to catch a toad. Catch was unsuccessful and summoned a predator!

Ebonysong was about to slam her paws down onto another mouse, when suddenly, Brightpaw's screech alerted her. The mouse squeaked and dashed away and Ebonysong growled in frustration. Upon realising that Brightpaw had said "owl"...The dark warrior dashed towards the white apprentice, rearing up on her hind legs and slashing at the owl. Dropping back down onto her paws, Ebonysong's dark pelt helped her hide in the shadows. "Brightpaw! Help me distract it!"

Ebonysong used Rear-Up to Slash, Night finesse is active!

((ahh sorry this took so long!))

Brightpaw breathed a sight of relief as Ebonysong suddenly appeared to help her. When her friend came down from slashing at the owl, the white apprentice threw another blow at the owl. It wasn't the best move she could've done, but the predator looked as if it was more focused on Ebonysong now. She was a little jealous that the dark-pelted warrior didn't even need to try be invisible in the night: Brightpaw's stark white pelt stuck out so much in the dark. However, the owl's attention was now focused on her, so she hopped Ebonysong would launch another attack soon. But the owl had other ideas. Just as she had done to it, it struck out with its talons. It caught her on her shoulder, red blood showing up clearly on her pelt.
