Misplaced Vengeance [closed]

Shadestrike's body trembled like a half-dead rabbit in the dim shadows. The uneven and raggedy breaths that leaped out of Tanglerose's chest were unheard by the queen as her daughter cried out to her. The calico was practically shriveled, her bones tight against her thin pelt and sores covering her body. She reached out, a ghastly paw extended with claws extended, wheezing in Tanglerose's direction.

"You... were... better... than this..." she hissed.

The warrior woke with a yelp, tears dripping down her face and pathetically coating her coarse grey pelt in splotchy wet marks. It was sunset; the rest of the den would be awake soon. Tanglerose dug her claws into the dirt, blinking and scratching the mossy floor of her solitary nest, as if it might erase the terrible vision from her memory. Her mother had looked like a mangled piece of prey at the end of her days. It almost made sense that her littermate would leave her. No! She couldn't forgive Eveningpaw. Now, she grieved alone.

Coping, for now, came in the form of finding an excuse to draw blood. She stalked through the marshland, heart drumming angrily as it propelled her around the territory. If one single cat put a toe over the line, they'd get no warning before caught between her claws. Win or lose, it didn't matter much to Tanglerose. She was already lost in the glory of tearing some poor, unfortunate creature a new one.

Bingo. A heavyset brown tom was wandering near the thunderpath. Without a moment's notice, she sprang into action, life stirring in her legs as she sprawled out overtop of him. She grabbed his scruff and tumbled over him, shredding his flanks with her claws as she struggled to keep a steady grip on his flesh. It proved to be a difficult task. The foreign scent of no enemy clan took her senses, and she thought to try and use the small influence she had as a means to an end.

"Do you know the location of a little tortoiseshell kittypet named Eveningpaw?" she snarled, though muffled by a mouthful of fur.

Wraith smelled the boundary markers, but effectively ignored them. The brown cat crossed over with apology and without care. Their territory did not exist but in their own minds, and Wraith obeyed the Order and the Balance, which was above any other form of government that any other cat colony could come up with. Wraith knew he would be attacked, knowing that not all cat colonies knew or respected the Balance, but that worked fine for him, because he needed to fight to keep his own skills sharp. The unmistakable plodding of an attacker closing the distance on him reached his ears. Wraith, completely expressionless and without even the smallest twinge of fear, pivoted on chocolate paws to meet his attacker.

Teeth sunk into his scruff, a move that nearly made him roll his eyes. What a horrible attack. What a useless maneuver. Ignoring the questioning of the clan female, Wraith's claws unsheathed and barreled ferociously and mercilessly into the throat of his adversary, looking to force the very life blood of the other cat to choke them and cause their death. Balance. A thing beyond describable beauty at times, and soul-crushingly grim at times too.

That was the Balance.

That was the Order.

And Wraith was it's own grim messenger; a soldier from the Dynasty of Death.

Tanglerose yowled as claws battered her, throwing her off like she was nothing more than a ragged squirrel body. She sprang back onto her paws, a growl bubbling in her throat as she shook off the embarrassment of her failure. How dare he interfere with her? How dare she let him win? His silence was infuriating. The mere notion that he would ignore such an obvious challenge filled her with such annoyance that she thought she might explode.

"Alright," she hissed. "Hold your tongue, then. I bet you think it makes you look real intelligent. High and mighty. Cats like you make me ill."

She charged forward, ducking under the tom's legs and slicing her dagger-like claws across his belly... perhaps with more force than necessary. She had no chance of bowling him over, but she had certainly bought herself a moment, during which the rogue's paws stumbled. Tanglerose shoved the sensation of her stinging wounds to the back of her mind.

Wraith back-pedaled away from her attack, but he wasn't quite fast enough to avoid it and her claws tore across his soft underbelly. He inhaled sharply from the blow, but his face betrayed no emotion. Upon her insistent verbal banter, she received only a blank stare. He didn't have time to argue who was smarter, nor did he particularly care. All that mattered in this moment was bloodshed and a final breath.

Still not returning any conversation, Wraith kicked off of the ground and was in the air above her, just before he angled his body downward and extended his claws. He was going to show no mercy as he sought to tear back the meat sack that was the she-cat and let the crimson fluids stain the ground below.
